1. Miha Krek’s Reports on the Communist Seizure of Power and Repression in Yugoslavia (1944–1945)Tomislav Kardum, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The paper examines the reports of Miha Krek, a leading Slovenian politician of the Slovenian People’s Party during World War II, preserved in the personal archive of British intelligence officer Stephen Clissold at the Bodleian Library. Written between 1944 and 1945, Krek’s reports document the communist consolidation of power in Yugoslavia under Tito’s Partisans, with a particular focus on Slovenia, and detail the systematic repression of the Catholic clergy and anti-communist elements. Drawing from his sources in Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Krek portrays the communist-led Liberation Front as a Soviet-backed instrument of terror aimed at establishing totalitarian rule. His appeals to British authorities for Anglo-American occupation of Slovenia reflect his vision of Slovenia as a Western, Catholic nation resisting communist domination. The study analyzes Krek’s anti-communist rhetoric, his documentation of massacres, and his proposals for Yugoslavia’s future, highlighting his prioritization of Slovenian interests despite a nominal Yugoslav outlook.

2. The repatriation of Italian prisoners of war from Yugoslavia after the second world war, 1945-7Urška Lampe, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Despite the issue of Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War receiving some significant attention, the fate of those prisoners held by the Yugoslav state has not yet been thoroughly examined. This is largely a consequence of the lack of sources, which is also why this issue has been treated superficially in the literature. The present article aims to fill this gap, focusing in particular on the repatriation of Italian prisoners of war held in Yugoslavia after the Second World War. Employing material from archives in the UK, Italy, Serbia, Slovenia and Switzerland, the author will reconstruct the process of repatriation by delving into international diplomatic circumstances and Italo-Yugoslav relations, as well as the political and ideological dynamics which affected the fate of those prisoners. The study will also provide a count of the number of Italian prisoners of war in Yugoslavia, which up to this point has been unclear. 3. Contested memories and the dynamics of remembrance in Slovenia related to the Second World WarUrška Lampe, Gorazd Bajc, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The article illustrates the dynamics of (collective) memory and remembrance related to the Second World War in Slovenia in the period from the beginning of the War to the present. Still today, there is a strong polarization in Slovenian society and especially among political elites about what “really happened,” who was right and who was wrong. During the War, the division arose between two major groups: 1) the members and supporters of the National Liberation Struggle (NLS), the so-called Liberation Front [Osvobodilna fronta], i.e. the Partisans; 2) those who collaborated with the occupying forces, especially the Slovenian Home Guards [Slovensko domobranstvo], and their supporters. The contribution is framed by the propaganda that was shaped during the War, by the collective memories that were consolidated during the period of Socialist Yugoslavia and the contested memories that emerged after the independence of Slovenia in 1991. All these facilitated and created the divided memory that is even now evident in Slovenia. The historical analysis is based on newspaper articles and other publications published during the war and in the years following the war by both groups. Furthermore, to understand the turn after the independence of Slovenia, the authors also analyze the Interim report of the Commission of Inquiry into the investigation of post-war massacres, legally questionable trials, and other such irregularities, which took place in Slovenia between 1993 and 1996. The article raises the question of how to alleviate the bifurcated situation to look forward with more optimism to a more nuanced view of the Second World War. Based on previous research, the authors argue that a “middle voice” approach can—in the long run—lead to a more constructive dialogue in Slovenia. 4. War-time memories and fairy tales: : the case study of Angelo, an Italian World War Two prisoner of war in YugoslaviaUrška Lampe, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This contribution explores the story of Angelo, an Italian Second World War veteran who, after experiencing war and escaping captivity in Yugoslavia, finally reached Trieste in 1946, where he met his future wife. It took him nearly 15 years to heal from his harrowing wartime trauma. Between 2021 and 2023, while collecting oral testimonies, I interviewed his son Sergio and grandson Ruben. The central subject of those interviews was the war-time period and the fairy tales that Angelo used to tell his son (and later his grandson) in the evenings, inspired by his war experiences. By recounting his war experiences in a metaphorical and child-friendly manner, these tales were not only imaginative and captivating for the child, but also served a profound purpose: they were (1) a way to communicate his memories and experience to the following generations; (2) a means to cope with his experiences and past; (3) a tool to socialise and educate his son, transmitting moral norms, social memories and preparing him for life in society. 6. A decade of decadence, or ten years that shook the world : the Adriatic borderland, 1914–1924Borut Klabjan, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This Special Issue on the Decade of Decadence focuses on the northern Adriatic transnational borderland from the beginning of the First World War in July 1914 to the Treaty of Rome in January 1924 when the city of Rijeka/Fiume was annexed by Italy and the Adriatic question was temporarily settled. As several recent studies have shown this decade is of fundamental importance at the global level and the northern Adriatic in these years represents a unique laboratory for studying the transformations of Europe in the twentieth century. Seen in these perspectives, these articles show how concepts of loyalty, sovereignty, nationality and citizenship did not conform to a linear process of nationbuilding but instead open new perspectives on Italian and Euro-Mediterranean politics, culture and societies before and after the First World War.
