2. Writing the Orient : The Representation of the Ottoman Society in the Travel of Eduard Sachau (1845–1930)Remzi Avci, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: In the nineteenth century, the writings of European travellers became a textual vehicle by which the West sought to understand the Orient. Based on first-hand but highly subjective data, they contain comparisons between the Orient and the Occident which distinguish the two regions from one another. Thus, they played an important role in shaping the Western perception of the Orient. This article focuses on the German Orientalist-philologist Eduard Sachau (1845–1930), who held a chair at the Friedrich-Wilhelm University in Berlin and also served as the director of the Seminar für Orientalische Sprachen (Institute of Oriental Languages). Sachau’s journey to the East began in 1879 and lasted about six months. His travel notes were published (in 1883), under the title Reise in Syrien und Mesopotamien (Travel in Syria and Mesopotamia). In the nineteenth century, not only the British and French but also the German travellers had an important role in shaping the Western perception of the Orient. Following Edward Said’s groundbreaking work Orientalism (1979) this study will argue that Sachau’s narratives produce certain stereotypes. It will be made the case through analyses of the forms of expression, perceptions and cultural patterns that Sachau chose in order to construct an orientalist discourse, when he described different ethnicities, religions and sects. 6. Early Modern Ottoman and Russian Clothing through Ethnic Stereotypes in Western and Central EuropeIzidor Janžekovič, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This paper traces the early modern ethnic ‘stereotypes’ in Western and Central Europe by discussing the various sources of such stereotypes, both textual and visual, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. A useful reference is the well-known – or sometimes infamous – Völkertafel (Table of Nations) from eighteenth-century Styria, which has been fully translated into English here. The writer emphasizes how narrow the gap is between an allegedly accurate, neutral account and one that veers into misrepresentation or stereotype. Whether a depiction is seen as stereotypical often hinges on the viewpoint and interpretation of the observer. Among the various ethnic generalizations explored, even traditional attire was interpreted as being characteristic of specific peoples or nations. The article comparatively examines the stereotypes about Ottoman and Russian clothing. The article claims that the Southeastern and Eastern European nations were grouped together with their according imperial identities, i.e., the Russian and Ottoman Empires. In the early modern era, ethnic identities were shaped along the imperial and state lines. 7. Implementing the Russian Initiative : Montenegrin Diplomatic Action Among Balkan Nations in 1896Darko Bakić, Ivan Radulović, Filip Vučetić, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: In response to the instability in the Ottoman Empire, which became particularly evident in the mid-1890s, Austria-Hungary adopted a plan in late January 1896 to occupy part of the territory in the Sanjak of Novi Pazar, provided it received consent from the Porte. On the other hand, Russia launched an initia-tive in February of the same year aimed at bringing the Balkan nations closer together, entrusting Montenegro with its implementation, precisely to prevent the Vienna government from exploiting the newly emerged situation in the neighboring empire to fulfill the Dual Monarchy’s territorial ambitions. To this end, Montenegrin Foreign Minister Gavro Vuković visited Belgrade, Sofia, and Constantinople, with the tangible results of his actions culminating in a secret agreement known as the Ugodba.
