Chronic, self-reported fatigue in adult immunotherapy patients and healthy controls : No association with cardiopulmonary exercise testing parameters
Damir Zubac, Timo Sonntag, Diana L. Kranjc, Freerk T. Baumann, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: This study examined whether cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) performanceparameters are associated with chronic cancer-related fatigue in patients receivingimmunotherapy checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) and healthy controls. Also, thedifferences in energy expenditure of steady-state cycling and gross efficiency wereassessed during submaximal cycling efforts. This study involved patients (n = 19,48 ± 13 years) receiving PD-1, PD-L1 checkpoint inhibitors and controls of similarage (n = 21, 49 ± 17 years). During the first visit, data on medical history, previousphysical activity records, and CPET to voluntary exhaustion were collected. The second visit involved body composition assessment, the MFI-20 fatiguequestionnaire, and 30-min steady-state cycling at 90% gas exchange threshold. There were no significant differences observed between the groups in age, stature,BMI, or resting blood pressure. Peak V̇O2 was 33% lower, and the group under ICItreatment had lower cycling efficiency (22.49% vs. 20.07%, p = 0.031), comparedto controls. All self-reported fatigue items derived from MFI-20 were significantlyhigher in the ICI group compared to controls (p = 0.001). The regression analysisfound no association between the self-reported general fatigue and data collectedduring CPET. Patients under ICI treatment reported higher levels of chronicfatigue, lower peak V̇O2, and reduced cycling efficiency. Interestingly, variablescollected during CPET did not explain self-reported chronic fatigue, underlyingthe complexity of this phenomenon

[18F]fluorocholine PET vs. [99mTc]sestamibi scintigraphy for detection and localization of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism : outcomes and resource efficiency
Sebastijan Rep, Klara Širca, Ema Maček Ležaić, Katja Zaletel, Marko Hočevar, Luka Ležaič, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Minimally invasive parathyroidectomy is the treatment of choice in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP), but it needs a reliable preoperative localization method to detect hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue. Higher sensitivity and lower radiation exposure was demonstrated for [18F]fluorocholine PET/CT (FCh-PET/CT) in comparison to [99mTc]sestamibi (MIBI) scintigraphy. However, data of its efficiency in resource use and patient outcomes is lacking. The aim of our study was to determine the resource efficiency and patient outcomes of FCh-PET/CT in comparison to conventional MIBI scintigraphy. Patients and methods A group of 234 patients who underwent surgery after MIBI scintigraphy was compared to a group of 163 patients who underwent surgery after FCh-PET/CT. The whole working process from the implementation of imaging to the completion of surgical treatment was analyzed. The economic burden was expressed in the time needed for the required procedures. Results The time needed to perform imaging was reduced by 83% after FCh-PET/CT in comparison to MIBI scintigraphy. The time needed to perform surgery was reduced by 41% when intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring was not used. There was no significant difference in the time of surgery between FCh-PET/CT and MIBI scintigraphy. Conclusions FCh-PET/CT reduces the time of imaging, the time of surgery and potentially reduces the number of reoperations for persistent disease.

Strength and cost analysis of geopolymer concrete using rice husk ash and GGBS as sustainable cement alternatives
Narala Gangadhara Reddy, Veeresh. B. Karikatti, Bheem Pratap, Shabarish V. Patil, Vesna Zalar Serjun, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The present study aims to develop environmentally friendly concrete by using industrial waste materials, namely ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and rice husk ash (RHA), to produce green concrete. Geopolymer concrete (GPC) has emerged as an alternative to eliminate the use of cement. The main objective of this study is to design and evaluate geopolymer concrete of M40, M50, and M60 grades. Mixes were prepared by replacing GGBS with RHA at 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% replacement levels for each grade. The resistance of these mixes against 5% sulphuric acid exposure was also examined. Experiments were conducted to determine compressive strength under different parameters, including NaOH concentration, proportions of RHA and GGBS, and curing duration. Additional tests assessed the effect of acid exposure on strength and weight loss. The cost-effectiveness of GPC production was also compared with that of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The results revealed that, for all three grades, replacement of GGBS with more than 10% RHA led to a decrease in compressive strength. Furthermore, the production cost of GPC was found to be more economical compared to OPC. Both weight loss and strength loss increased progressively with longer acid exposure. Strength reduction for M40, M50, and M60 grade concretes reached 75.4%, 76.1%, and 79.9%, respectively, when 10% of GGBS was replaced with RHA.

Pumping-like results for copyless cost register automata and polynomially ambiguous weighted automata
Filip Mazowiecki, Antoni Puch, Daniel Smertnig, 2026, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Povzetek: In this work we consider two rich subclasses of weighted automata over fields: polynomially ambiguous weighted automata and copyless cost register automata. Primarily we are interested in understanding their expressiveness power. Over the field of rationals and 1-letter alphabets, it is known that the two classes coincide; they are equivalent to linear recurrence sequences (LRS) whose exponential bases are roots of rationals. We develop a tool we call Pumping Sequence Families, which, by exploiting the simple single-letter behaviour of the models, yields two pumping-like results over arbitrary fields with unrestricted alphabets, one for each class. As a corollary of these results, we present examples proving that the two classes become incomparable over the field of rationals with unrestricted alphabets. We complement the results by analysing the zeroness and equivalence problems. For weighted automata (even unrestricted) these problems are well understood: there are polynomial time, and even NC$^2$ algorithms. For copyless cost register automata we show that the two problems are PSpace-complete, where the difficulty is to show the lower bound.

Can low-cost sensors (LCS) enhance air quality monitoring for personal pollution exposure assessment?
Anja Ilenič, Alenka Mauko Pranjić, Janez Ščančar, Radmila Milačič Ščančar, Prashant Kumar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Laboratory and field assessments of low-cost sensors (LCS) are essential for ensuring the accuracy of PM2.5 measurements collected by citizens in air quality campaigns. Evaluation of Sensirion SPS30 (LCS SPS30) in controlled laboratory setting showed a coefficient of determination (R2) ranging from 0.81–0.99 and a root mean square error (RMSE) from 0.81–61.72 μg m−3, at average concentration of 21.5 μg m−3. In contrast, co-location assessment at an average concentration of 9 μg m−3 resulted in R2 of 0.5 and a RMSE of 6.82 μg m−3. The results demonstrated that the sensor met micro-environmental monitoring standards (accuracy < 25%) and United States Environmental Protection Agency's performance criteria (RMSE ≤ 7 μg m−3, R2 > 0.7) only at relative humidity (RH) levels below 60%, emphasising its strong sensitivity to RH and the need for RH-dependent data corrections. The observed underestimation or overestimation of PM2.5 readings was primarily attributed to variations in particle composition and concentration. Despite accuracy variations, LCSs can effectively capture spatiotemporal urban air quality patterns and identify pollution hotspots in community monitoring, particularly in low-pollution environments. In a citizen-led PM2.5 monitoring campaign in Maribor, Slovenia, the lowest concentrations were recorded at 15:00 (2.9 μg m−3), while the highest occurred during the morning rush-hour (4.8 μg m−3), likely attributed to the planetary boundary layer’s impact on atmospheric particulate dispersion. Spatial analysis revealed that hotspots clustered near intersections, where vehicle waiting time is the longest.

Offline indoor navigation via QR codes
Robert Modic, Matevž Ogrinc, Andraž Simčič, Bojan Blažica, Drago Torkar, 2025, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Povzetek: This paper introduces a novel, cost-effective system for indoor navigation and localization that operates independently of satellite positioning services and data communication networks. The proposed solution leverages QR codes affixed within building interiors and an accompanying smartphone application, which, through integration with the device’s inertial motion unit (IMU) sensors and the application of the Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) algorithm [1], accurately determines the user’s position. This position data is then utilized by the Dijkstra navigation algorithm [2] to facilitate user navigation to their desired destination. Beyond navigation, this system offers significant utility in healthcare logistics, enabling efficient collection and transmission of triage decisions in emergency situations, even in the absence of a communication network.

Environmental and economic impacts of hydroxyapatite mineralized wood : LCA and LCC analysis
Matic Sitar, Manja Kitek Kuzman, Leon Oblak, Katarina Remic, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Wood is considered a promising raw material for the circular bioeconomy and has the ability to store biogenic carbon, and this is one reason why we want to extend the service life of the wood. In order to consider the influence of durability in our study, we used two wood species with different lifespans. Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) belongs to the group of very sensitive wood species, as the durability of the untreated wood is estimated to be around 5 years; meanwhile, pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) belongs to the group of moderately resistant wood species, where the durability of the untreated wood is estimated to be up to 15 years. While toxic chemicals are often used for wood preservation, hydroxyapatite offers an environmentally friendly solution for wood mineralization. This study presents life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost (LCC) analyses comparing a novel hydroxyapatite (HAp) mineralization method with a service life of 50 years to a non-mineralized reference alternative. LCA was based on EN ISO 14040 and EN ISO 14044, while LCC was adapted from the European Commission’s LCC tool for public procurement. The results of the LCA show that mineralized wood has a lower overall impact on the environment than surface-treated beech wood but a higher impact than surface-treated pine wood. Most impact categories were determined by electricity consumption with the exception of stratospheric ozone depletion, water consumption, and land use. Water consumption proved to be the category where the mineralization process was problematic due to water consumption during the leaching process. The LCC showed that mineralized wood is the most cost-effective solution for the exterior façade, as all costs, but especially investment costs, were lower. The differences in the LCA and LCC results are mainly due to the different lifetimes of the two alternatives. It can be concluded that if energy-intensive processes and chemicals are used in the production of the material, the extended lifetime must be sufficient to account for the additional impacts that occur during the production phase.

Maristem - stem cells of marine/aquatic invertebrates : from basic research to innovative applications
Loriano Ballarin, Baruch Rinkevich, Kestin Bartscherer, Artur Burzynski, Sebastien Cambier, Matteo Cammarata, Isabelle Domart-Coulon, Damjana Drobne, Juanma Encinas, Uri Frank, Anne-Marie Geneviere, Bert Hobmayer, Helike Löhelaid, Daniel Lyons, Pedro Martinez, Paola Oliveri, Lorena Perić, Stefano Piraino, Andreja Ramšak, Sebastian Rakers, Fabian Rentzsch, Amalia Rosner, Tiago Henriques da Silva, Ildiko Somorjai, Sherif Suleiman, Ana Varela Coelho, 2018, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The “stem cells” discipline represents one of the most dynamic areas in biomedicine. While adult marine/aquatic invertebrate stem cell (MISC) biology is of prime research and medical interest, studies on stem cells from organisms outside the classical vertebrate (e.g., human, mouse, and zebrafish) and invertebrate (e.g., Drosophila, Caenorhabditis) models have not been pursued vigorously. Marine/aquatic invertebrates constitute the largest biodiversity and the widest phylogenetic radiation on Earth, from morphologically simple organisms (e.g., sponges, cnidarians), to the more complex mollusks, crustaceans, echinoderms, and protochordates. These organisms contain a kaleidoscope of MISC-types that allow the production of a large number of novel bioactive-molecules, many of which are of significant potential interest for human health. MISCs further participate in aging and regeneration phenomena, including whole-body regeneration. For years, the European MISC-community has been highly fragmented and has established scarce ties with biomedical industries in an attempt to harness MISCs for human welfare. Thus, it is important to (i) consolidate the European community of researchers working on MISCs; (ii) promote and coordinate European research on MISC biology; (iii) stimulate young researchers to embark on research in MISC-biology; (iv) develop, validate, and share novel MISC tools and methodologies; (v) establish the MISC discipline as a forefront interest of biomedical disciplines, including nanobiomedicine; and (vi) establish collaborations with industries to exploit MISCs as sources of bioactive molecules. In order to fill the recognized gaps, the EC-COST Action 16203 “MARISTEM” has recently been launched. At its initial stage, the consortium unites 26 scientists from EC countries, Cooperating countries, and Near Neighbor Countries.
