Povzetek: In this paper, we investigate the metaphors conceptualising the process of the accession of the Western-Balkan countries to the European Union, in the online news articles published in Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In a corpus comprised of 150 articles (104,806 words), we identified the expressions which were the instantiations of various conceptual metaphors with accession as the target domain. The accession, a dynamic process in itself, was generally presented via dynamic metaphors (travelling, entering a house, schooling, etc.); however, the dynamics of the processes presented via these metaphors was almost always contextually reduced (the travelling was long, slow or endless; the person entering the house could not move past the doorstep or they found the door closed or just slightly open; the student did not finish school or did not make progress …). The more frequent metaphors were a continuation of the conventional patterns from the earlier period, whereas the less frequent metaphors proved more creative.

Povzetek: This article presents an outline of the activities of the Hôtel Lambert - one of the most influential parties of the Polish Great Emigration - in the face of the Balkan national movements taking shape within the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. It indicates the directions of activity of the political camp of Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski towards the internal and external situation of the Balkan countries. The text discusses the importance of Balkan concepts presented by the Hôtel Lambert and their influence on the dynamically changing political reality in this region of Europe.

Povzetek: This article examines Slovenia’s international development co-operation since its accession to the European Union (EU) in 2004, focusing on its strategic priorities, challenges, and impact in regions such as the Western Balkans, Eastern Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa. Using a historical and comparative approach, the study analyses policy documents, official development assistance (ODA) data and case studies to assess Slovenia’s role as a small donor state within the EU framework. The analysis sheds light on the evolution of Slovenian development diplomacy, the integration of development assistance into foreign policy objectives and the challenges of policy coherence and resource allocation. The article also examines the opportunities Slovenia has to improve its development impact and strategic partnerships by better aligning with international standards and adapting to global dynamics.

Povzetek: This text critically examines Serbia’s integration into the European Union’s migration regime between 2015 and 2025. It explores Serbia's transition from a peripheral transit zone to a strategic location for containment, deportation, and enhanced border securitisation. Rather than being a passive partner, Serbia has proactively restructured its legal, institutional, and operational landscape to align with the EU's priorities for controlling migration. The study explores the layered and incremental processes through which this alignment has occurred, including legal harmonisation with the EU acquis, bilateral and trilateral policing agreements, the deployment of Frontex personnel, and the introduction of digital return infrastructures and biometric surveillance systems. These are often presented under the guise of technical assistance, regional cooperation, or humanitarian support. At the same time, the EU’s political and financial investments have turned Serbia’s geographical location and enforcement capacity into commodities, giving them operational legitimacy while denying the country the rights, protections, and decision-making power granted to member states. This asymmetrical arrangement positions Serbia both as an executor and as a product of EU externalisation policies. The text concludes that Serbia’s experience is emblematic of a broader European trend: migration control is being outsourced; legal safeguards are being eroded; and rights are being distributed selectively. This is reshaping the very geography of European governance.

Povzetek: The study explores the presence of the Ottoman heritage in Bulgaria. Despite its exclusion from the national heritage canon, different communities engage with and valorise it. Using a scalar approach, we examine how heritage operates at various levels, revealing the dynamic interplay of dominant and vernacular discourses. Drawing on anthropological fieldwork, the paper highlights the mosaic of memories, narratives, and practices that reclaim Ottoman heritage today.
