Notospermus annulatus (Nemertea: Lineidae), a New Record for Bosnia and Herzegovina

Abstract: The first record of the ribbon worm Notospermus annulatus (Grube, 1840) in Bosnia and Herzegovina is presented. For a long time, it was regarded as a synonym of Notospermus geniculatus (Delle Chiaje, 1822), but based on recent molecular phylogenetic study its status as a separate species is proposed and followed in this paper. A single specimen was recorded on 2nd October 2021 in a small bay near Opuće Village on Klek Peninsula. This finding contributes to the understanding of the species’ distribution in the Adriatic Sea and expands the knowledge of a scarcely known national marine fauna. This is also the first record of any Nemertea species in marine waters in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

At the northern edge of the Adriatic: First records of the invasive Caulerpa cylindracea in the Gulf of Trieste

Abstract: The non-indigenous green alga Caulerpa cylindracea is among the most invasive macroalgae in the Mediterranean Sea and has progressively expanded throughout the Adriatic basin since its first record in 2000. This study reports the first records of C. cylindracea in the Gulf of Trieste, the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea. The species was first recorded in September 2022 at San Bartolomeo (Italy), where only a few thalli were recorded within a Cymodocea nodosa meadow. In September 2023, two thalli were recorded at Lazaret, representing the first record of the species along the Slovenian coast. Targeted surveys conducted between 2023 and 2025 documented the current spatial extent of the species at both sites and revealed an additional population at the Rex site, between the towns of Koper and Izola. At San Bartolomeo, C. cylindraceaoccupied an estimated 14,497 m² in July 2023 and 12,331 m² in September 2024. At Lazaret, the species occupied an esti-mated 12,114 m² by September 2025, while the newly recorded population at the Rex site, between the towns of Koper and Izola, covered approximately 3,000 m². Because the surveyed areas were not monitored systematically before the initial de-tections, these estimates represent the observed spatial extent of the populations at the time of each survey rather than a quantified rate of spread. These findings confirm the establishment of C. cylindracea in the Gulf of Trieste, extend its known distribution to the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea, and provide a baseline for future monitoring and assessment of its ecological impacts in this environmentally heterogeneous coastal basin.

First Evidence of the Presence of Okenia picoensis Paz-Sedano, Ortigosa & Pola, 2017 (Gastropoda: Nudibranchia) in the Adriatic Sea

Abstract: The authors report the finding of some specimens (8 sightings) of Okenia picoensis (Gastropoda: Nudibranchia) at three different sites in Croatia (northern Adriatic Sea). Although this seaslug species has only recently been described, this record confirms its rapid spread throughout the Mediterranean Sea. This finding represents the first substantiated record in the Adriatic Sea.

Additional Data on the Bump-Head Sunfish, Mola alexandrini (Ranzani, 1839) in the Adriatic Sea

Abstract: On 3 June 2017, a group of divers mapping benthic habitats in a locality south of Dubrovnik, Croatia, spotted and photographed a giant specimen of sunfish accompanied by a school of imperial blackfish (Schedophilus ovalis) at a depth of 40 m. The specimen was identified as a bump-head sunfish Mola alexandrini (Ranzani, 1839). This is one of the few records of this little-known and overlooked species in the Adriatic Sea and one of the few cases in the whole Mediterranean.

Recent Record of the Atlantic Pomfret Brama brama (Bonnaterre, 1788) (Scombriformes: Bramidae) in the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea)

Abstract: On 20 June 2023 a specimen of Atlantic pomfret Brama brama (Bonnaterre, 1788) (Bramidae) was caught by trammel net at 5 m depth in the Gulf of Trieste. B. brama is a pelagic neritic oceanodromous species distributed throughout temperate and warm-temperate oceans at depth ranging from 0 to 1,000 m and occasionally coming close to the shore. It is considered a rare species in the eastern Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea. The present record is the most recent in the Gulf of Trieste, after those historical deposited in the Natural History Museum of Trieste.

The First Record of Complete Albinism in Common Stingray Dasyatis pastinaca (Linnaeus, 1758)

Abstract: An unusually colored stingray was video-recorded on 15 August 2022 in the eastern central Adriatic. Its morphological characteristics corresponded with the descriptions of the common stingray Dasyatis pastinaca (Linnaeus, 1758), however, the specimen observed was entirely white on the dorsal and ventral surfaces, including the tail, except for the tips of the spines. Furthermore, the iris of the specimen lacked pigmentation and exhibited an abnormal orange-yellow (xanthochromic) coloration. This discovery marks the first recorded instance of complete albinism in this particular species and a rare occurrence among elasmobranchs in general.

The First Marine Record of Northern Pike Esox lucius Linnaeus, 1758 in the Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: Near the coast of Stobreč, Central Adriatic Sea, a recreational fisher caught a strange fish specimen at a depth of 5 m, using a fishing trident. Upon the arrival of the fisher in the harbor the specimen was taken away for analysis. This revealed that the specimen’s morphological characteristics matched those of the northern pike Esox lucius Linnaeus, 1758. As the northern pike is a stenohaline freshwater fish, it had never been recorded before in the high salinity marine conditions of the Adriatic Sea or anywhere else in the Mediterranean. The collected specimen most likely originated from the nearby short river Žrnovnica. This paper discusses the possibility that the northern pike introduced to some rivers emptying into the Adriatic Sea may possess the local ability to withstand short trips to high salinity waters.

Additional Record of Pterois miles (Scorpaenidae) in Croatian Waters (Eastern Adriatic Sea)

Abstract: One specimen of Pterois miles was caught by a spearfisherman on 15 August 2023, at a depth of 17–18 m, near Račišće (Island of Korčula, southern Adriatic). This is the first record for this species based on a caught and deposited specimen, and the second documented occurrence for Croatian waters. It confirms the hypothesis that the species is capable of reaching and expanding in the Adriatic Sea.

Additional Historical Records of the Great White Shark, Carcharodon carcharias (Lamniformes: Lamnidae) in the Eastern Adriatic : Updating Regional Occurrence of a Critically Endangered Shark

Abstract: This paper presents additional historical records of Carcharodon carcharias in the eastern Adriatic and provides an updated list of the species’ occurrence in this area from 1868 onwards. Since the publication of the last list in 2002, 10 new records have been added based on newly available information. Out of these, 8 records date back to the 19th and 20th centuries, while the remaining 2 are from the 21st century.

New Findings of the Cup-Shaped Demosponge Calyx nicaeensis (Risso, 1826) on the Rocky Outcrops in the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea)

Abstract: The cup-shaped demosponge Calyx nicaeensis (Risso, 1826) is an endemic Mediterranean species. It is considered to be a rare species, which needs to be included into international conservation protocols. Between 2023 and 2025, 17 specimens were recorded on the rocky outcrops in the Gulf of Trieste for the first time, within a Site of Community Importance (SCI) of the European Natura 2000 network.
