1. Valuable Ancient Remnants and Superstitious Foolishness : Religiosity, Nationalism, and Enchantment in Slovenian Folklore of the 19th CenturyAnja Mlakar, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Based on Slovenian folklore from the second half of the 19th century, the paper addresses the unexplored topic of the intermixing of folklore with Catholicism and the role of this folklore in the process of Slovenian nation building. Based on an analysis of articles published in the newspaper Kmetijske in rokodelske novice, the author of the paper reveals an inconsistent discourse with regard to the vernacular Slovenian religiosity: everything associated with Christianity is praised, while nonChristian folklore elements are either praised (“Pagan remnants”) or condemned (“superstition”). In the search for enchantment, which is seemingly disappearing due to modernisation, Slovenian intellectuals projected the wonderous into the past and the lower levels of society. Vernacular religiosity in 19th century Slovenian lands is distinctly multilayered and eludes moral evaluations and any attempts to control it. The original contribution of the article is an analysis of the use and reinterpretation of folklore with religious elements in the process of Slovenian nation building and the role of the concept of „enchantment“ in the perception of folklore at that time. 2. The Contribution of First Teachers of French at Petrovic’s Court to the Transformation of Society and the Affirmation of Montenegro in EuropeIvona Jovanović, Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The paper explores the role and contribution of the first foreign teachers of French in Montenegro, to their students/rulers – last three sovereigns of the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty, to Montenegrin society as a whole and to the affirmation of Montenegro in Europe. The paper chronologically relates to the period of rule of Petar II Petrović- Njegoš, Danilo I and Nikola I, to whom the aforementioned Romance language instructors did not transfer merely a knowledge of language, but also much other substance formed from different views and perspectives on the world, thus contributing to the emancipation of Montenegrin society. Through their efforts to modernise Montenegro and strengthen its sovereignty, as well as their publications and political engagement during events critical to Montenegrin history, they contributed to its reputation and popularisation throughout Europe. The research is based on facts found by studying archive and library materials, and on analysis of periodical publications, travel writings, and documents of a memoir/autobiographical character, which significantly contributes to the originality of the article, where the conclusions of the new analysis are presented and represent a significant contribution to the findings published so far. 3. From the Habsburg to the Karađorđević Dynasty : The Position of Croatian and Slovenian Nobility in the Yugoslav StateIskra Iveljić, Miha Preinfalk, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The article compares the position of nobility in Slovenia, Croatia and Slavonia before and after the Great War. The focus is on the transition to the Yugoslav state. 6. Characteristics of poor elderly people in the early 19th century included in the system of formal care – the case of the provincial centre of LjubljanaDragica Čeč, 2026, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Povzetek: Newer approaches to the analysis of old age, shaped by the cultural turn, emphasise the individual’s perspective and the experience of ageing “from below.” An examination of the life trajectories of applicants for poor relief in Ljubljana confirms the hypotheses that elderly people combined various sources of subsistence and sought to maintain independence, yet those who entered the system of formal care were generally physically weak and almost invariably without a kin network that could support them. Nevertheless, some applicants possessed a highly developed social network. The analysis shows that in the context under study, old age was not understood as a chronological category but primarily as a matter of work capacity, physical strength, and the ability to support oneself. 7. The burden of ageing : old age, poverty, and attitudes toward social issues in the 19th-century Austrian LittoralUrška Bratož, 2026, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Povzetek: The paper examines attitudes toward ageing and the elderly in Istria and Trieste in the second half of the nineteenth century. It takes as its starting point the perceptions associated with old age, which in the nineteenth century inevitably included, on the one hand, the inability to work—often leading to the economic dependence of the elderly and to their being regarded as a burden on the family or the state—and, on the other hand, their physical frailty, whether biologically or socially conditioned, which could to some extent be both a cause and a symptom of their social deprivation. Elderly people can be traced among the residents of almshouses and recipients of poor relief, among patients in hospitals for infectious diseases, and among those who died of age related wasting. Medical imperatives directed at the elderly were tailored primarily to the bourgeoisie and stood in stark contrast to the actual experience of ageing among the lower classes, which could not be associated with rest and self care but rather with prolonged physical labour, bodily pain, and economic insecurity. 9. Gender and ennoblement in the Austrian empire : the transformation of the nobility in the context of the women's questionJan Županič, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Women's emancipation was a centuries-long process that took different forms across regions. In the Habsburg monarchy, as elsewhere in Europe, noble titles signified elite status and service to the state. Titles were typically conferred on men, reflecting their legal and social dominance. However, hereditary nobility meant that women often shared in the privileges of their husbands or fathers. Direct ennoblement of women was rare and usually tied to marriage with Habsburg princes. Yet in the 19th century, a few Austrian women were ennobled for their own achievements. These women were exceptions, not the rule, within a male-dominated honor system. Still, their recognition marked a shift in the monarchy’s view of women's public roles. The practice reflected changing ideas about merit, gender, and service to the dynasty. Though few in number, such cases signalled a broader transformation underway.
