Cisplatin-induced non-convulsive posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in a 41-year-old woman with metastatic malignant melanomaJanja Ocvirk, Marko Boc, Martina Reberšek, Tanja Roš-Opaškar, 2009, original scientific article Abstract: Background. Cisplatin, a widely used antineoplastic agent usually induces peripheral neuropathy, but can rarely also complicate with encephalopathy, with or without seizures. Case report. We report a case of a young patient with metastatic malignant melanoma with signs and symptoms of cisplatin-induced non-convulsive posterior reversible encephalopaty syndrome. Within the days shortly after the first cycle of cisplatin based chemotherapy the patient suffered from nausea, vomitus, headache, severe pain at the site of sub-cutaneous metastases and confusion. She later experienced somnolence, cortical blindness and aphasia, but without epileptic seizures. Conclusions. Cisplatin is an effective chemotherapeutic drug but also very toxic one and physicians using it must also be aware of possible encephalopathy. Experimentally induced tumours in laboratory animals provide opportunity for studying certain aspects of tumoursthat cannot be effectively studied in humans. Significant information on human CRC aetiology or factors influencing it has derived from studies using dimethylhydrazine (DMH) model that is one of the experimental models appreciated for its morphological similarity to human CRC. Today, DMH model represents useful research tool for the studies of colon carcinogens and chemopreventive agents. The review offers insight into morphogenesis and genetic alterations of DMH induced colorectal epithelial tumours in rats. The metastases of breast cancer in a male patient were treated with electrochemotherapy by intratumoral injection of cisplatin. Electrochemotherapy is chemotherapy with the subsequent local application of electric pulses to the tumor nodules in order to increase drug delivery into the cells. Case report. Cutaneous metastases of breast cancer were treated with the intratumoral administration of cisplatin and by 8 electric pulses (1300 V/cm) applied a minute later to each cutaneous metastasis. The treatmentresulted in complete response of two electrochemotherapy treated cutaneous metastases and partial response of the third metastasis. In cutaneous metastases treated with intratumoral administartion of cisplatin without electric pulses, only partial response was obtained. Conclusion. This study confirms that electrochemotherapy with cisplatin is effective in the treatment of breast cancer metastases, too, as it was already proved for electrochemotherapy with bleomycin. Use of steel slag for the synthesis of belite-sulfoaluminate clinkerLea Žibret, Martina Cvetković, Maruša Mrak, Mojca Loncnar, Andrej Ipavec, Sabina Dolenec, 2020, published scientific conference contribution Abstract: Belite-sulfoaluminate (BCSA) cements are low-carbon mineral binders, which require low energy consumption and allow the incorporation of various secondary raw materials in the clinker raw meal. In this study two types of unprocessed steel slags, coming from stainless steel production, were incorporated in the BCSA clinkers. The clinker phase composition, clinker reactivity, and the compressive strength of the cement were studied to evaluate the possible use of the slag in BCSA clinkers. The cement clinkers were synthesized by using natural raw materials, white titanogypsum, mill scale, as well as two different steel slags: (i) EAF S slag, which is a by-product of melting the recycled steel scrap in an electric arc furnace, and (ii) la dle slag as a by-product of the processes of secondary metallurgy, in various quantities. Raw mixtures with two different targeted phase compositions varying in belite, calcium sulfoaluminate and ferrite phases were sintered at 1250 °C. Clinker phases were determined by Rietveld quantitative phase analysis, while their distribution, morphology and incorporation of foreign ions in the phases were studied by SEM/EDS analysis. The clinker reactivity was determined by isothermal calorimetry. BCSA cements were prepared by adding titanogypsum. The compressive strength of the cement pastes was determined after 7 days of hydration. The presence of a predicted major clinker phases was confirmed by Rietveld analysis, however periclase was also detected. Microscopy revealed subhedral grains of belite and euhedral grains of calcium sulfoaluminate phases, while ferrite occurred as an interstitial phase.
