Animal pneuma : reflections on environmental respiratory phenomenology
Lenart Škof, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: This essay is an attempt to propose an outline of a new respiratory animal philosophy. Based on an analysis of the forgetting of breath in Western philosophy, it aims to gesture towards a future, breathful and compassionate world of co-sharing and co-breathing. In the first part, the basic features of forgetting of breath are explained based on David Abram’s work in respiratory ecophilosophy. This part also introduces an important contribution to modern philosophy by Ludwig Klages. The second part is dedicated to reflections on what I understand as an unfortunate transition from soul and pneuma to spirit and Geist. Based on these analyses, I proceed towards an idiosyncratic thought on the nocturnal mystery of pneuma, with references to ancient Upanishadic and 20th-century phenomenological Levinasian thought. Based on these teachings, I argue that, at the bottom of her existence, the subject is a lung partaking in an immense external lung (Merleau-Ponty). In the fourth part of the essay, I extend my reflections toward comparative animal respiratory phenomenology and argue for the immense compassion for all our fellow breathing beings. Finally, in the concluding, fifth part of this essay, I am arguing for a future biocentric and breathful environment, signifying and bringing a new compassionate-respiratory alliance into the world.

Reviewing the modeling aspects and practices of shallow geothermal energy systems
Paul Christodoulides, Ana Vieira, Stanislav Lenart, João Maranha, Gregor Vidmar, Rumen Popov, Aleksandar Georgiev, Lazaros Aresti, Georgios Florides, 2020, pregledni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Shallow geothermal energy systems (SGES) may take different forms and have recently taken considerable attention due to energy geo-structures (EGS) resulting from the integration of heat exchange elements in geotechnical structures. Still, there is a lack of systematic design guidelines of SGES. Hence, in order to contribute towards that direction, the current study aims at reviewing the available SGES modeling options along with their various aspects and practices. This is done by first presenting the main analytical and numerical models and methods related to the thermal behavior of SGES. Then, the most important supplementary factors affecting such modeling are discussed. These include: (i) the boundary conditions, in the form of temperature variation or heat flow, that majorly affect the predicted thermal behavior of SGES; (ii) the spatial dimensions that may be crucial when relaxing the infinite length assumption for short heat exchangers such as energy piles (EP); (iii) the determination of SGES parameters that may need employing specific techniques to overcome practical difficulties; (iv) a short-term vs. long-term analysis depending on the thermal storage characteristics of GHE of different sizes; (v) the influence of groundwater that can have a moderating effect on fluid temperatures in both heating and cooling modes. Subsequently, thermo-mechanical interactions modeling issues are addressed that may be crucial in EGS that exhibit a dual functioning of heat exchangers and structural elements. Finally, a quite lengthy overview of the main software tools related to thermal and thermo-hydro-mechanical analysis of SGES that may be useful for practical applications is given. A unified software package incorporating all related features of all SGES may be a future aim.

Parametarska studija kolničke konstrukcije ojačane geoćelijama
Samo Peter Medved, Bojan Žlender, Stanislav Lenart, 2018, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: U radu je prikazano parametarsko ispitivanje kolničke konstrukcije ojačane geoćelijama. Analiza temeljena na metodi konačnih elemenata uključuje model neojačane kolničke konstrukcije te model kolničke konstrukcije ojačane geoćelijama, pri čemu se analiziraju razni položaji, debljine i čvrstoća geoćelija. U okviru modela određen je i očekivani vijek trajanja kolničke konstrukcije. Rezultati parametarskog proučavanja u skladu su s rezultatima analitičkih rješenja, laboratorijskih i terenskih ispitivanja. Dobiveni rezultati upućuju na bitno poboljšanje nosivosti, smanjenje debljine asfaltnih slojeva i povećanje trajnosti kolničke konstrukcije kada je ona ojačana geoćelijama.

Povzetek: In assessing the impact of climate change on infrastructure, it is essential to consider the interactions between the atmosphere, vegetation and the near-surface soil. This paper presents an overview of these processes, focusing on recent advances from the literature and those made by members of COST Action TU1202 - Impacts of climate change on engineered slopes for infrastructure. Climate- and vegetation-driven processes (suction generation, erosion, desiccation cracking, freeze-thaw effects) are expected to change in incidence and severity, which will affect the stability of new and existing infrastructure slopes. This paper identifies the climate- and vegetation-driven processes that are of greatest concern, the suite of known unknowns that require further research, and lists key aspect that should be considered for the design of engineered transport infrastructure slopes in the context of climate change.

Influence of structural parameters of nonwoven geotextiles on separation and filtration in road construction
Špela Bezgovšek, Dunja Šajn Gorjanc, Boštjan Pulko, Stanislav Lenart, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Nonwoven geotextiles are often used in road construction as a separation layer. They consist of the web of fibers with different orientations. The orientation of fibers has an important influence on physical and mechanical properties of nonwoven geotextiles. The production of nonwoven geotextiles is cheaper in comparison to woven or knitted fabrics which can also be used as separation geotextiles. The purpose of this research was to study the influence of structural properties of nonwoven geotextiles, namely the diameter of fibers and mass and thickness of nonwoven geotextiles, on their mechanical and hydraulic properties. Six types of nonwoven geotextiles were used in the research. They were produced by the drylaid process (carded) using mechanical bonding technique and also with the combination of mechanical and thermal bonding technique. The research confirmed that the bonding technique and structural properties significantly influence the separation and filtration properties of nonwoven geotextiles, such as opening size and water permeability. It was also found that there are no significant differences in mechanical properties, such as viscoelastic properties and compression creep, between the samples in the dry and wet conditions.

Dynamic properties of lightweight foamed glass and their effect on railway vibration
Stanislav Lenart, Amir M. Kaynia, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Deformation properties of lightweight coarse grained material from recycled foamed glass have been determined from large-scale triaxial tests on prismatic specimens with dimensions 40 cm x 40 cm x 80 cm. Deformations were measured locally using vertical and horizontal local deformation transducers. Monotonic and cyclic loading at small to medium strain range were conducted. Three load sequences representing the expected conditions of use of lightweight material as vibration-reducing material in railway geotechnics have been used. Results indicate strong effect of brittle cellular structure of tested material as well as confining pressure dependency of elastic threshold shear strain and damping ratio. The results were used to assess the applicability of empirical formulas for shear modulus of granular materials to lightweight foamed glass. The parameters determined from the laboratory tests were further used in numerical analysis of railway dynamic response. The results of the numerical simulations show that replacement of fill in track embankment by lightweight material could improve the dynamic response of the track in reducing the vibration.

On dreams, human imagination, and technology
Lenart Škof, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In this paper, I reflect on human imagination, the intention of technology, and the future of humanity in the era of the Anthropocene. I begin by presenting the environmental crisis and declare a need to protect and safeguard nature. In the first part, I offer an explanation of a dream of an airliner and link it to the Bachelardian theory of aerial imagination and oneiric flight. I show how, today, technology has entered our lives profoundly and how it has become closely intertwined with us human beings. Based on this, the second part is dedicated to Martin Heidegger and his question concerning technology. By analyzing Heidegger’s seminal essay on technology, I argue for an alternative possibility of thinking about human artefacts (such as various tools or even an airliner) beyond them being merely a standing-reserve and thus rather as a mode of unconcealement. The third and last part of this essay is dedicated to Ilia Delio’s Teilhardian cosmic vision of the future of technological progress. Technology, for Delio, is a part of this cosmic narrative and human beings represent the thinking portion of the universe. I conclude with a thought on a new elemental consciousness and imagination, in which nature, its life force, and the most advanced technology, including AI, would become a part of a new panentheistic whole.

Digital twins and road construction using secondary raw materials
Sebastjan Meža, Alenka Mauko Pranjić, Rok Vezočnik, Igor Osmokrović, Stanislav Lenart, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Secondary raw materials (SRMs) tend to be a valuable replacement for finite virgin materials especially since construction works (i.e., building and civil engineering work such as road construction) require vast quantities of raw materials. Using SRM originating from recycling a broad range of inorganic waste materials (e.g., mining waste, different industrial wastes, construction, and demolition waste) has been recognized as a promising, generally more cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative to the exploitation of natural resources. Despite the benefits of using SRM, several challenges need to be addressed before using SRM even more. One of them is the long-term durability and little-known response of construction works built using such alternative materials. In this paper, we present the activities to establish a fully functioning digital twin (DT) of a road constructed using SRM. The first part of the paper is devoted to the theoretical justification of efforts and ways of establishing the monitoring systems, followed by a DT case study where an integrated data environment synthesizing a Building Information Model and monitored data is presented. Although the paper builds upon a small scale, the case study is methodologically designed to allow parallels to be drawn with much larger construction projects.
