4. “I want Albania to be like Europe”: grassroots movements and new ways of commoning in contemporary AlbaniaNataša Gregorič Bon, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: “I want Albania like Europe” was the slogan of the student protest that followed the demise of the communist regime in Albania in 1990. During this period, students were seen as the main agents of social change. Despite considerable social, political, and economic changes, Albania remains one of the lowest-income countries in Europe. While many local economists and politicians continue to use EU accession as the benchmark for the country’s well-being, inhabitants increasingly face precarity and uncertainty, with alternative scenarios often seemingly non-existent and coated with passive attitude. Although this passivity seems to be the prevailing mindset, certain grassroots collectives have sought ways to reshape the uncertainty of daily life. I argue that through their practices and tactics, they aim to remit already familiar structural remnants such as the nexus of house–land–kinship, translating them into collective commons that have the potential to lead to alternative futures. 5. Radon concentration variability and microclimate controls in two Slovene show cavesStanka Šebela, Miloš Briestenský, Uroš Novak, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The study presents 8-years long dataset (2017–2025) of high-resolution radon concentration measurements in Županova Jama and 2-years long dataset (2022–2024) in Postojnska Jama. Radon concentrations from two show caves were compared with outside and cave air temperature as well as atmospheric pressure to assess diurnal and seasonal variability. Županova Jama showed consistently higher radon levels with a 2023 mean of 4030 Bq/m³, compared to 2278 Bq/m³ in Postojnska Jama. Diurnal variations occurred in both caves, with night values typically higher in Županova Jama, while Postojnska Jama displayed day and night concentrations more balanced depending on ventilation regimes. In Postojnska Jama, summer radon maxima followed outside air temperature peaks with a 12–18 h lag. Seasonally, both caves showed higher radon concentrations in summer and lower in winter. Long-term monitoring near Županova Jama revealed an increase in mean outside air temperature (+0.86 °C from 2018 to 2024) and a parallel rise in radon, particularly in 2023–2024. The influence of atmospheric pressure was found to be seasonally dependent at both sites, with higher radon concentrations during periods of stable summer pressure and lower values during higher winter oscillations. Exposure limits indicate safe annual times of 512 h for Postojnska Jama and 284–289 h for Županova Jama, values not hazardous for visitors but important for cave guides. The findings underline the importance of continuous monitoring and cave-specific ventilation management to mitigate long-term health risks. 7. Comparative study of testate amoebae biodiversity in surface and subterranean karst habitats – example from Dinaric karst (South-Eastern Europe)Najla Baković, Robert Baković, Ferry J. Siemensman, Tanja Pipan, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The Dinarides of Bosnia and Herzegovina are exceptionally rich in surface and subterranean geomorphological and hydrological karst features which make them an ideal setting for ecological studies of microorganisms. This work presents the results of a seven-year study of testate amoebae, polyphyletic eukaryotic microorganisms, across various karst habitats. The main objectives were to collect data on testate amoebae biodiversity and to deepen our understanding of the transformation of their assemblages across surface and subterranean habitats. More than 50 taxa of testate amoebae were identified, including the notable finding of Psammonobiotus dinarica – a species originally described from caves – in a pristine surface karst river. A Jaccard resemblance-based cluster analysis of overall testate amoebae biodiversity revealed a clear separation of lake assemblages from river, spring, soil and cave assemblages. These results were confirmed by site-based cluster analysis and NMDS ordination, which showed strong separation (SIMPROF test) of lake, soil and cave assemblages, but also distinct assemblages of hydrologically interconnected karst features (sinking river Šuica → sinkhole cave Ponor Kovači → the resurgence Vrilo Spring). This study confirms a high similarity between river, spring, cave, and soil assemblages but reveals a previously unknown distinction of lake assemblages. It also showed that spring assemblages have higher similarity to river assemblages than to those in caves, implying a possible impact of primary production due to diffuse light in springs during summer droughts. This study emphasizes the need for further research of microbial assemblages in relation to environmental factors in order to support science-based protection of both surface and subterranean karst ecosystems. 8. Italian, Argentine, Yugoslav and Slovene : The many identities of Rudi GuštinMiha Zobec, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The essay addresses the trajectories of Rudi Guštin and his siblings Marija and Ferdinand, who migrated from the Julian March, a region with a sizable Slovene and Croat population that was annexed to Italy after World War I, to Argentina. While Rudi relocated first to Argentina, returned to Yugoslavia, and eventually remigrated to South America, his siblings settled in Argentina and retained regular contact with the family left behind. Drawing on personal correspondence, interviews and institutional documents, this essay examines Rudi’s affection for Yugoslavia and the lack thereof in the case of his siblings. 10. Towards integrated ecosystem assessments : A literature review on linking ecosystem condition indicators to ecosystem servicesJoana Seguin, Daniela Ribeiro, Mateja Šmid Hribar, 2026, pregledni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Ecosystem services (ES) fundamentally depend on ecosystem condition (EC), yet many ES assessments still rely on land-cover proxies, risking biased assessment results as well as weak uptake, meaning limited application of results in decision-making contexts. This review provides a comprehensive overview of how EC indicators are used in ES assessments published between 2018 and 2022.
In total, 128 publications have been included in the review, from which 929 EC indicators with a direct or implicit link to one or more ES and 707 ES indicators have been documented. The recorded EC indicators were reclassified according to the Ecosystem Condition Typology (ECT) provided by the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting - Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA EA) and supplementary classes (ECT+). Our analysis identified a focus on terrestrial ecosystems, with under-representation of marine and less intensively managed ecosystems. Within the reclassified ECT and ECT+ indicators, chemical state EC indicators were prevalent, while landscape state and functional state metrics remained under-operationalised. Besides, the share of spatially explicit indicators was limited. Moreover, we found that a significant share of indicators, labelled as EC, were not EC indicators in the strict sense, but instead related to ecosystem extent, ES or stable environmental characteristics, leading to a conceptual blurring between condition, pressure, extent and service indicators. Analysing the link between EC and ES revealed that EC indicators were: (1) primarily quantitatively compared to ES or integrated into ES assessments and (2) most frequently linked to regulating ES. The reviewed literature showed a predominance of positive EC–ES relationships, confirming that ecosystems in better condition tend to support a higher supply of ES. In summary, our review identified progress towards integrated ES assessments, highlighted persistent gaps and stressed the importance of continued efforts to achieve the widespread implementation of EC-enabled ES assessments.
