1. Osmooka, a new spider genus from Madagascar : a surprising relative of the Australian fauna (Araneae: Paraplectanoididae)Matjaž Kuntner, Kuang-Ping Yu, Matjaž Bedjanič, Matjaž Gregorič, Eva Turk, Klemen Čandek, Jonathan A. Coddington, Ingi Agnarsson, James Starrett, Jason E. Bond, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot with high endemism and ancient phylogenetic diversity. We here report the discovery of Osmooka aphana gen. nov., sp. nov. from Marojejy National Park. Phylogenomic analyses place Osmooka as sister to the Australian Paraplectanoides Keyserling, 1886 and this doublet is sister to Nephilidae Simon, 1894. When proposed, Paraplectanoididae Kuntner, Coddington, Agnarsson & Bond, 2023 was exclusively Australian and monogeneric, but was predicted to contain additional, undescribed taxa. The discovery of Osmooka and its phylogenetic placement in Paraplectanoididae support this prediction. We present a taxonomic treatment of Osmooka and Paraplectanoides, and a reappraisal of Orbipurae morphological homologies. With this new discovery, we revalidate Paraplectanoididae, Nephilidae, and Phonognathidae Simon, 1894 ranks resurrected as exclusive, monophyletic, and well-diagnosed families, whereas Araneidae Clerck, 1757 requires further redefinition. Finally, we test the hypothesis of East Gondwanan vicariant origin of Osmooka and Paraplectanoides. This scenario would predict an ancient age of their ancestor, predating the 130 Ma breakup of Gondwana. Divergence dating refutes this hypothesis by estimating their common ancestor at 57 Ma. Rather than through vicariance, the disjunct distribution of Osmooka and Paraplectanoides is best explained through Cenozoic intercontinental dispersal and/or extinctions. Potential discovery of additional paraplectanoidid diversity might better elucidate the timing, modes, and trajectories of historic dispersal and extinction events. 2. Environmental drivers of scale morphology in a Canary Island lizard across 3700 m of elevationK. Kelly, Rodrigo Megía-Palma, Urban Dajčman, S. Blázquez-Castro, M. R. Pie, Anamarija Žagar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The skin serves as the outermost barrier between an organism and its environment and fulfills numerous physiological and ecological functions. In lizards, scale morphology is an important adaptive trait that mediates responses to environmental influences such as extreme temperatures, ultraviolet radiation, drought and anthropogenic disturbances. Our study provides an analysis of the environmental drivers influencing intraspecific variation in the scale ecomorphology of the island lizard Gallotia galloti across 3700 m of elevation, taking into account different macro- and microclimatic conditions and varying degrees of anthropogenic influences and across three body regions: dorsal, ventral and tail. We found several correlations suggesting multiple dependencies of scale morphology on environmental variation. The positive correlation between July temperature and wind speed at 3 cm above the ground and dorsal scale density showed that more densely packed scales are associated with hotter and drier environments. This could possibly be related to the thermoregulatory and hydroregulatory function of the skin, since the dorsal side of the body is most exposed. Higher sun exposure was associated with larger dorsal and tail scales, indicating a possible photoprotective function. Ventral scales are not exposed to the pressure of solar radiation and wind. Accordingly, ventral scales showed no correlation with these factors, but we found that a higher ratio of day-to-night temperature variation relative to seasonal changes (isothermality) was associated with a higher density of ventral scales. The human footprint index positively correlated with larger and denser ventral (and not dorsal or tail) scales. Overall, our results illustrate the complexity of responses of scale morphology to different environmental variations. Evidently, G. galloti exhibits morphological diversity in response to climatic conditions and urbanization, highlighting the potential ecological significance of scale size variation. Future research should investigate the genetic basis and possible effects of climate change on scale morphology. 3. Spatial and temporal variation in vibroscape composition in two grassland habitatsJuan José López Díez, Rok Šturm, Jernej Polajnar, Meta Virant-Doberlet, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Substrate-borne vibrational signaling is one of the oldest and taxonomically widespread forms of animal communication. For many animals the natural vibrational environment (vibroscape) is an essential source of information underlying their behavioral decisions; however, the structure and dynamics of vibroscape composition of the natural habitats are largely unexplored. We studied vibroscape composition in a eutrophic lowland hay meadow and a sub-Mediterranean dry karst grassland. The results obtained by simultaneous, multi-channel recordings showed that vibroscape composition changes throughout the day and from day to day, differs between plant species, depends on the spatial position of the plant within the habitat and is also influenced by environmental parameters. The results highlight the unpredictability and high variability of the vibrational environment encountered by plant-dwelling insects, and the complexity in implementing biodiversity monitoring based on vibroscape composition. 4. To mate or to steal food? A male spider’s dilemmaMatjaž Kuntner, Xin Xu, Daiqin Li, 2025, drugi znanstveni članki Povzetek: We report a sequence of unusual male behaviors observed in Nephila pilipes (Fabricius, 1793) (Araneae: Nephilidae Simon, 1894), a sexually size dimorphic tropical spider species in Singapore. We documented a male suitor using his mouth parts (chelicerae) rather than his copulatory organs (pedipalps) to repeatedly probe female genitals. The behaviors may have served as a strategy to assess the female’s mating status, functioned as a courtship strategy, or, most plausibly, represented an attempt to remove a genital plug. The documented chrono-sequence culminated in the male’s attempted commensalism, followed by an aggressive attack by the female, resulting in near-fatal injury to the male. Notably, the attack did not escalate into cannibalism, suggesting that the extreme size difference in Nephila may render small males unappealing as prey. 5. Observation of heterospecific mating attempt by blue chaser Libellula fulva Müller, 1764 and broad-bodied chaser L. depressa Linnaeus, 1758 (Odonata: Libellulidae)Matjaž Bedjanič, 2023, drugi znanstveni članki Povzetek: A successful copula formation between a Libellula fulva male and a L. depressa female was documented photographically on 23. 6. 2022 along a small stream at the Natura 2000 site Ličenca pri Poljčanah in NE Slovenia. First confirmation of variegated molehopper Xya variegata (Latreille, 1809) (Orthoptera: Tridactylidae) occuring in SloveniaMatjaž Bedjanič, 2023, drugi znanstveni članki Povzetek: The occurrence of the variegated molehopper Xya variegata in Slovenia is confirmed unambiguously for the first time, based on observations of adults and larvae on 24. 3. 2023 and 2. 6. 2023 on the banks of a gravel pit along the Mura River, east of Petišovci in the Prekmurje region, northeastern Slovenia. Thus, the previously doubtful inclusion of the species in the checklist of Slovenian Orthoptera is now justified. Further research is needed to improve knowledge of its distribution and biology. A detailed assessment of the threat status and planning of conservation measures for this threatened and ecologically highly specialised grasshopper species should also be carried out. 7. Functional diversity of vibrational signaling systems in insectsMeta Virant-Doberlet, Nataša Stritih Peljhan, Alenka Žunič Kosi, Jernej Polajnar, 2023, pregledni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Communication by substrate-borne mechanical waves is widespread in insects. The specifics of vibrational communication are related to heterogeneous natural substrates that strongly influence signal transmission. Insects generate vibrational signals primarily by tremulation, drumming, stridulation, and tymbalation, most commonly during sexual behavior but also in agonistic, social, and mutualistic as well as defense interactions and as part of foraging strategies. Vibrational signals are often part of multimodal communication. Sensilla and organs detecting substrate vibration show great diversity and primarily occur in insect legs to optimize sensitivity and directionality. In the natural environment, signals from heterospecifics, as well as social and enemy interactions within vibrational communication networks, influence signaling and behavioral strategies. The exploitation of substrate-borne vibrational signaling offers a promising application for behavioral manipulation in pest control.

8. Tracing the invasion of a leaf-mining moth in the Palearctic through DNA barcoding of historical herbariaNatalia I. Kirichenko, Evgeny V. Zakharov, Carlos Lopez-Vaamonde, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The lime leaf-miner, Phyllonorycter issikii is an invasive micromoth with an unusually higher number of haplotypes in the invaded area (Europe, Western Siberia) compared to its putative native region (East Asia). The origin of the genetic diversity in the neocolonized region remains unclear. We surveyed over 15 thousand herbarium specimens of lime trees (Tilia spp.) collected across the Palearctic over a period of 252 years (1764–2016) looking for preserved larvae within the archival leaf mines. We found 203 herbarium specimens with leaf mines of Ph. issikii collected in East Asia, one of them dating back to 1830, i.e. 133 years before the description of the species. In contrast, only 22 herbarium specimens collected in the West Palearctic in the last three decades (1987–2015) carried leaf mines. DNA barcoding of archival specimens revealed 32 haplotypes out of which 23 were novel (not known from modern populations) and found exclusively in East Asia. Six haplotypes are shared between both native and invaded areas and only two were responsible for the recent invasion of the Western Palearctic. The remarkable number of newly discovered haplotypes in archival populations supports East Asia as the native region and the source area of invasion. We measured oxygen consumption rates (OCRs), carbon requirements (CRs), ingestion (I) rates, and egestion (E) rates at 14 °C and 17 °C, representing current and predicted future conditions in the collection habitats of the two species. Diacyclops belgicus displayed OCRs (28.15 and 18.32 µL O2/mg DW × h at 14 and 17 °C, respectively) and carbon budget (CR: 0.14 and 0.10 µg C/mg × d at 14 and 17 °C) lower than those of D. crassicaudis crassicaudis (OCR: 55.67 and 47.93 µL O2/mg DW × h at 14 and 17 °C; CR: 0.3 and 0.27 µg C/mg × d at 14 and 17 °C). However, D. belgicus exhibited metabolic rates and carbon requirements comparable to those of other epigean species, challenging the assumption that low metabolic rates are universal among stygobitic species. Temperature variations did not significantly affect the metabolic responses and carbon requirements of the two species, suggesting that they may cope with moderate temperature increases. 10. Computational methods for detecting insect vibrational signals in field vibroscape recordingsMatija Marolt, Matevž Pesek, Rok Šturm, Juan José López Díez, Behare Rexhepi, Meta Virant-Doberlet, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The ecological significance of vibroscape has been largely overlooked, excluding an important part of the available information from ecosystem assessment. Insects rely primarily on substrate-borne vibrational signalling in their communication, which is why the majority of terrestrial insects are excluded from passive acoustic monitoring. The ability to monitor the biological component of the natural vibroscape has been limited due to a lack of data and methods to analyse the data. In this paper, we evaluate the use of deep learning models to automatically detect and classify vibrational signals from field recordings obtained with laser vibrometry. We created a dataset of annotated vibroscape recordings of meadow habitats, containing vibrational signals categorized as pulses, harmonic signals, pulse trains, and complex signals. We compared different deep neural network architectures for the detection and classification of vibrational signals, including convolutional and transformer models. The PaSST transformer architecture, which was fine-tuned from a pre-trained checkpoint demonstrated the highest performance on all tasks, achieving an average precision of 0.79 in signal detection. For signals with more than one hour of annotated data, the classification models achieved instance-based F1-scores above 0.8, enabling automatic analysis of activity patterns. In our case study, where 24-hour field recordings were analysed, the trained models (even those with lower precision) revealed interesting activity patterns of different species. The presented study, together with the dataset we publish with this paper, lays the foundation for further analysis of the vibroscape and the development of automated methods for ecotremological monitoring that complement passive acoustic monitoring and provide a comprehensive approach to ecosystem assessment.
