1. Skeletal Abnormalities in a Sphyraena sphyraena (Linnaeus, 1758) and a Trachinus radiatus Cuvier, 1829 Collected from the North-Eastern Aegean Sea, Izmir, TurkeyLaith A. Jawad, Okan Akyol, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This study targeted the skeletal anomalies in a European barracuda, Sphyraena sphyraena, and a starry weever, Trachinus radiatus obtained from the wild population of the north-eastern Aegean Sea, Izmir, Turkey. A severe case of consecutive repetition of lordosis-kyphosis was observed in the S. sphyraena, and a mild case of cranial lordosis, ankylosis, and hyperostosis in the T. radiatus. These records are equally important for fisheries biologists and aquaculturists as this is the first such report for the European barracuda and the starry weever, which supplements the abnormality incidences already recorded from Turkish waters. The evaluation of the anomalies in the investigated specimens was carried out based on morphological identification and using radiography. Possible reasons for such abnormalities are discussed. Additional investigation would be necessary to link specific contaminants with the examined types of anomaly. 2. Impact of Fishing Capacity and Environmental Parameters on Landings of Hexanchus griseus in the Sea of MarmaraHakan Kabasakal, Uğur Uzer, F. Saadet Karakulak, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Between July 1967 and December 2023, 136 bluntnose sixgill sharks, Hexanchus griseus, were caught in the Sea of Marmara (SoM). Although both a generalised linear model (GLM) and the Mann-Kendall trend test indicated an increasing trend in annual landings of H. griseus, the estimated smoothing splines of the GLM regression trend line revealed a sharp decline in landings after 2017. While the capture depths ranged from 10 to 1,000 m since the early 2000s, the majority of specimens were caught in the shallow waters of the continental shelf. Deteriorating environmental conditions and increasing deoxygenation in the deep waters of the SoM coincide with a reduction in the capture depth of bluntnose sixgill sharks over the continental shelf. The evidence suggests an ongoing process of vertical habitat compression, which appears to be increasing the vulnerability of H. griseus to commercial fisheries in the SoM. 3. Fluctuating Asymmetry in Chelon auratus from the Libyan Mediterranean Coast and the Ain Ziana LagoonOsama A. Elsalini, Laith A. Jawad, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The present study represents the first research of morphological asymmetry in the eye lens diameter and three otolith features (otolith length, width, and weight) examined in the mullet species Chelon auratus collected from the Mediterranean coast and the Ain Ziana Lagoon, Libya. The asymmetry value for the eye lens diameter was the highest among the four morphological characters studied, and higher for the Ain Ziana Lagoon than for the Mediterranean coast of Libya. The study also showed that the asymmetry value increased with the fish’s total length. Plausible reasons for asymmetry in the four morphological traits examined are discussed in relation to the inconstancy in growth induced by ecological factors, including differences in water temperature, salinity, depth, and contaminants present in the marine waters of Libya and the Ain Ziana Lagoon. 4. Morphological Deformities in a Common Two-Banded Sea Bream, Diplodus vulgaris (Osteichthyes: Sparidae), from Northern Tunisian Waters (Central Mediterranean Sea)Sihem Rafrafi-Nouira, Rimel Benmessaoud, Mourad Chérif, Christian Reynaud, Christian Capapé, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: In a sample of common two-banded sea bream, Diplodus vulgaris, collected from the northern coast of Tunisia, one specimen displayed abnormal morphology. This individual presented a prominently developed upper margin, arched into a hump, a pointed upper head profile, and a strongly curved lateral line. X-ray imaging revealed abnormal curvatures in the vertebral column, such as hyperkyphosis and lordosis. A length-weight relationship analysis based on 49 normal specimens and the abnormal specimen showed a slightly negative allometry, suggesting that such specimens are capable of living alongside normal population in the wild. 5. Water quality of selected watercourses in ZasavjeLenart Štaut, Tajan Trobec, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Good surface water quality is one of the most important goals of sustainable water management, along with sufficient quantity. This paper presents an analysis of water quality in the Medija, Trboveljščica and Boben watercourses in Zasavje (central Slovenia), which are not included in regular water quality monitoring. Water quality was assessed on the basis of own field and laboratory analysis of selected physico-chemical parameters. In the period 2020-2021, 9 cyclical samplings were carried out at 16 locations at different times of the year. It was found that the rivers Trboveljščica and Boben are significantly polluted, while the river Medija is in a much better condition. In the headwaters, water pollution is relatively low and mainly due to agricultural activities, which is also reflected in better water quality. In the lower reaches, the Boben and Trboveljščica rivers in particular are subject to significant pollution from industry and households, which are also the main sources of pollution. 6. Environmental pollution load and contaminant transfer in Natura 2000 protected brownfield siteAnja Ilenič, Petra Vrhovnik, Sonja Lojen, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Revitalisation of contaminated brownfield sites is essential for sustainable development, particularly near sensitive ecological areas like Natura 2000 sites. The lagoon in Slovenia’s Regional Park Šturmovci, an artificial wastewater convergence point created during hydroelectric construction, is a highly relevant example. This study integrates geochemical, mineralogical and isotopic analyses to identify sources and controlling mechanisms of contaminant distribution in lagoon sediments and assess their transfer to nearby agricultural soils during flooding events. Results indicate anaerobic conditions, with depth-related shifts in phosphorus, sulphur and redox-sensitive elements, such as rare earth elements (REE), arsenic (As), barium (Ba), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb) and vanadium (V), as well as fluctuations in pyrite-rich laminated layers, suggesting potential flood-driven remobilisation of trace elements. Lagoon sediments are highly contaminated with As (73 mg kg−1), Ba (247 mg kg−1), Pb (97 mg kg−1) and Zn (1118 mg kg−1), with elevated concentrations also observed in agricultural soil, all exceeding respective limit values of 20, 160, 85 and 200 mg kg−1. Pollutant concentrations were highest near wastewater inflows and decreased with distance, with nitrogen isotopic patterns indicating partial nitrification and surface ammonium accumulation, reflecting intensive agricultural inputs in the area. High enrichment factor (EF > 20) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo > 3) values, in particular for As, Cd and Zn, indicated severe contamination and highlighted the urgent need for effective remediation strategies, including immobilisation using biochar or cement-based binders, as well as phytoremediation approaches. 9. Spatiotemporal analysis of light pollution in Samsun (Turkey) using spatial statistics and algebra from SNPP/VIIRS satellite imagerySarp Doruk Ozturk, Derya Ozturk, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This study analyzes the spatiotemporal changes in light pollution in Samsun (Turkey) from 2012 to 2024 using remote sensing and geographic information systems. SNPP/VIIRS satellite data from five years were examined using spatial statistics and algebraic methods to measure nighttime light variations. Results show a sharp decline in dark sky areas and expansion of high light zones from 85.9 km² to 139.5 km², and medium zones from 87.6 km² to 145.5 km², driven by urbanization and industrial growth. Rapid changes occurred in Atakum, Ilkadim, Canik, and Tekkekoy, affecting sensitive ecological and astronomical sites. The strong correlation between light emissions and socio-economic indicators highlights the need for sustainable lighting policies to mitigate adverse environmental impacts. 10. The natural attenuation of bioavailable sulfur loads in soil around a coal-fired power plant 20 years after ceasing pollution : the case of Plomin, CroatiaNeža Malenšek Andolšek, Sonja Lojen, Nina Zupančič, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The coal-fired Plomin Thermal Power Plant (Plomin TPP) in Croatia is located in the center of the east coast of the Istrian peninsula (northern Adriatic) and is considered the main source of historical air pollution in the region. Between 1970 and 2000, sulfur-rich coal from the local Raša coal mine was primarily used. In this study, a screening of content and fate of TPP-derived sulfur in soil around the power plant was made two decades after the S-rich coal was banned from use. Soil samples were collected at varying distances from the TPP in the prevailing wind direction (NE), along with a control sample taken more than 10 km away. The samples were analyzed for total sulfur, sulfate, organic sulfur (humic and fulvic), and the stable isotope composition of total sulfur (δ34S). Additionally, coal and coal ash were analyzed for total sulfur, sulfate and δ34S. Soil sampling along the prevailing wind direction from the Plomin TPP revealed markedly elevated sulfur content, with levels at 100 m downwind reaching up to 4 wt.%, which is over 100 times higher than the 0.04 wt.% measured at the control site located upwind. Sulfur content decreases sharply with increasing distance from the TPP, reflecting the deposition gradient along the prevailing wind path. Speciation analysis showed that over 95% of the sulfur in the soil is now present in organic form, mainly bound to humic acids. The δ34SVCDT values of the bulk coal used in the TPP ranged from −10.0 to −5.0‰. In most soil samples, the bulk δ34S values were positive (+7.0 to +20.0‰). The values of sulfate in soil range from +1.0 to +5.5‰, while those in organic sulfur range from −3.5 to +6.0‰. This indicates that atmospheric deposition of 34S-depleted fly ash and sulfate from coal are the most important sulfur sources, while some of the sulfur in the soil is also of marine origin. Finally, we showed that natural attenuation was a significant and efficient process within the sustainable management of the site historically contaminated by anthropogenic atmospheric sulfur deposition.
