2. Rho-kinase inhibitor - a molecule for pharmacological treatment of decompensated corneas : case seriesNina Kobal, Špela Štunf Pukl, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Objective: Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) inhibitors have recently emerged as promising agents for the treatment of corneal endothelial dysfunction. Because corneal transparency critically depends on endothelial cell function, endothelial failure can lead to persistent visual impairment. However, clinical evidence regarding the use of topical ROCK inhibition in various etiologies of endothelial decompensation remains limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in central corneal thickness (CCT), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and treatment-related adverse events in eyes with corneal edema of different etiologies treated with fixed-combination drops of netarsudil 0.02%/latanoprost 0.005%, Roclanda®. Methods: In this prospective, uncontrolled, exploratory case series, we investigated the effects of topical ROCK inhibition on corneal endothelial cell function in 13 eyes of 11 patients with persistent, nonhealing corneal edema following intraocular procedures. Patients were treated with topical Roclanda® once daily for three months. Clinical evaluation included BCVA, CCT, and safety assessment. Changes in CCT and BCVA were assessed before therapy, and after 1 and 3 months of treatment. Results: Mean baseline CCT was 782.8 µm and decreased significantly by 71.0 µm at 1 month and by 120.2 µm at 3 months (p = 0.0074 and 0.0012, respectively). Complete resolution of corneal edema was achieved in 38% of eyes. Mean BCVA improved from 0.744 before treatment to 0.518 logMAR at 3 months (p = 0.0026), with 46.2% of eyes gaining two or more Snellen lines. The analysis including only one eye per patient showed similar results, with statistically significant reductions in CCT at both 1 and 3 months and a significant improvement in BCVA at 3 months after the exclusion of the second eye in bilaterally included patients. Treatment was well tolerated; with mild conjunctival hyperemia as the most common adverse effect, while reticular epithelial corneal edema occurred in one eye and resolved after the completion of the treatment. Conclusions: In this prospective, exploratory case series of patients with nonhealing corneal edema, 3 months of a fixed-dose netarsudil 0.02%/latanoprost 0.005% treatment resulted in significant reduction in CCT, as well as clinically important improvement in BCVA. These exploratory findings cannot explain the mechanism of action, but suggest a potential therapeutic role for ROCK inhibitors in eyes with nonhealing corneal edema and possibly residual endothelial reserve. Larger controlled studies are needed to confirm these observations and further define indications for treatment. 3. Regenerative urban transformation in urban planning : a systematic review of key themes and planning implicationsSelin Başcan Yüce, Azime Tezer, 2026, pregledni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Regenerative development has gained prominence as an ecological paradigm in urban planning; however, its integration into urban transformation processes remains conceptually fragmented and uneven in practice. This study examines how regenerative development is framed within discussions on urban transformation, with a particular focus on its implications for planning systems and policymaking. A systematic literature review, guided by PRISMA protocols, identified thirty-eight peer-reviewed articles indexed in Scopus, which were coded using MAXQDA and analysed through reflexive thematic analysis. The findings reveal five interrelated dimensions of regenerative urban transformation (RUT): underlying rationales, key components, implementation challenges, modes of integration into urban planning, and evaluation approaches. The literature positions RUT as a response to the unsustainability of dominant urban models that degrade ecosystems and increase climate vulnerability. Core components – such as circular economy principles, public participation, adaptive reuse, and digital technologies – are widely acknowledged but often addressed as isolated interventions rather than integrated planning mechanisms. Key challenges include limited social acceptance, financing constraints, behavioural change requirements, and weak institutional coordination. Although integration into urban planning is commonly framed through alignment with sustainable development strategies and ecosystem services, persistent gaps remain in governance alignment and policy coherence. The study concludes that current assessment tools suffer from limited scale adaptability and weak links to planning and policy decision-making, constraining the practical evaluation of RUT. 4. Reuse trends in abandoned military land in Ljubljana, Prague, and Pula : an overview through the lens of the commonsFederico Camerin, Arturo Vicente Ruiz, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Managing former military land has been a challenging task, especially due to its status as a publicly owned asset. This has arisen bottom-up using commoning approaches to satisfy people’s needs. This article explores such approaches by analysing three former military barracks in central and eastern Europe: Karlo Rojc barracks, currently Rojc Community Centre (Pula, Croatia); Kasárna Karlín (Prague, Czech Republic); and Fourth of July barracks, today called Metelkova Mesto (Ljubljana, Slovenia). This article examines the conversion of these abandoned spaces to civilian use by approaching them through the lens of Ostrom’s eight design principles for successful common-pool resource institutions. By comparing the case studies through these principles, this article demonstrates how the cases are based on features that can make them proper commons, as well as potential risks related to the profit-oriented approach conducted by technocratic or growth-oriented coalitions. 5. Design and analysis of low power rapid charge holding dynamic latched comparatorJaspar Vinitha Sundari Thirunavukkarasu, Paramasivam Kuppusamy, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The need for portable devices with high precision has raised the demand for optimization of power and delay in various dynamic comparator topologies. In this paper, an efficient architecture that does timely yet rapid comparison with reduced power dissipation and optimal energy per comparison is proposed. Introducing an extra tail transistor in preamplifier of comparator, assists in holding the high gain, thereby reducing delay as well as power. The latch is meanwhile ready with a minimum threshold value at its output nodes with the help of a pass transistor in between latch output nodes. The conventional, hybrid, and proposed architecture, namely Low power Rapid Charge Holding Dynamic Latched Comparator (LRCHDLC) are simulated and verified for power, delay, and energy efficiency in Cadence Virtuoso Spectre. The proposed technique shows a significant improvement in delay and power consumption when compared to conventional comparators. Monte Carlo simulation shows that the proposed technique is robust to the process mismatch, sustaining optimal power, delay and energy efficiency. Radiotherapy is a cornerstone of treatment for various cancers, but often causes collateral damage to surrounding healthy tissue, including skeletal muscle. Ionizing radiation leads to oxidative stress and inflammation, which impairs the regenerative capacity of muscle tissue. Irradiation reduces the number and functionality of satellite cells and disrupts the tightly regulated processes of myogenesis and tissue remodelling. In addition, irradiation alters the muscle microenvironment by promoting fibrosis and vascular damage, which further impedes effective regenera-tion. Cytokine signalling pathways are also dysregulated following irradiation, contributing to impaired activation and differentiation of satellite cells. Conclusions. There is evidence that factors such as melatonin and growth factors can improve muscle regenera-tion. Understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the impairment of muscle regeneration after radiotherapy is crucial for the development of targeted strategies to mitigate side effects and improve patients’ qual-ity of life. Gelatin/ascorbic acid scaffolds for controlled release of allantoin : a fully natural approach for skin tissue regeneration through pro-regenerative, antimicrobial, and keratinocyte-supportive propertiesMarija M. Tomić, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Background/Objectives: Nature-inspired therapeutic strategies that promote biological regenerative mechanisms and replicate the native structural microenvironment conductive to formation of healthy tissue are increasingly recognized as a promising platform for skin tissue regeneration and wound healing. This study proposes an innovative design of novel multifunctional scaffolds composed entirely of natural components—gelatin, L-ascorbic (ASA) acid and allantoin—as a bioinspired approach for skin tissue regeneration through pro-regenerative, antimicrobial, and keratinocyte-supportive properties. Methods: The biocompatible, skin-adhesive scaffolds were prepared via a simple and environmentally friendly heat-induced crosslinking of gelatin with varying ASA contents, and by enriching the system with allantoin. The influence of ASA content on scaffold properties was investigated through characterization of their morphology, porosity, swelling behavior, skin tissue adhesion, and allantoin release potential. Biocompatibility was evaluated in vitro using human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells, while antibacterial activity was assessed against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Results: The scaffolds revealed a highly porous, interconnected structure with tunable porosity (87.37–92.39%) and soft-tissue-matched mechanical properties (0.81–1.47 MPa). Incorporation of allantoin into the scaffolds enhanced their mechanical performance and swelling capacity. All scaffolds demonstrated antibacterial activity against both tested bacteria, supported keratinocyte viability and provided sustained release of allantoin for up to 76 h, confirming their multifunctional pro-regenerative potential. Conclusions: The novel gelatin/ascorbic acid scaffolds enriched with allantoin combine a porous replicated structure of native extracellular matrix, fluid absorption capacity, soft-tissue-like mechanical properties, stable skin tissue adhesion, cytocompatibility and antibacterial functionality with the pro-regenerative properties of allantoin, thereby representing a multifunctional and biologically inspired platform for advanced skin tissue regeneration and wound-healing applications. Damage to the cornea resulting from trauma, infection, or disease can lead to blindness. Corneal regeneration using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and MSC-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) offers a promising alternative to corneal transplantation. MSCs are multipotent stromal cells that can differentiate into various cell types, including corneal cells. They can also secrete a variety of anti-inflammatory cytokines and several growth factors, promoting wound healing and tissue reconstruction. This review summarizes the current understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which MSCs and MSC-EVs contribute to corneal regeneration. It discusses the potential of MSCs and MSC-EV for treating various corneal diseases, including corneal epithelial defects, dry eye disease, and keratoconus. The review also highlights finalized human clinical trials investigating the safety and efficacy of MSC-based therapy in corneal regeneration. The therapeutic potential of MSCs and MSC-EVs for corneal regeneration is promising; however, further research is needed to optimize their clinical application.
