1. This study quantified and characterized visually identified MPs in influent and effluent waters from seven urban WWTPs in Andalusia (southern Spain) during a six-month monitoring period (July–December 2020). The targeted analytical size range was 45–5000 µm, and a subset of particles was further characterized by FTIR. MPs were detected in all sampling campaigns. Concentrations ranged from 6 to 78 items/L in influent and from 12 to 65 items/L in effluent. Fibers were the dominant morphology, and the 100–500 µm size class was the most represented fraction. Among the subset analyzed by FTIR, PA, PP, PVC and LDPE were the most frequent polymer assignments, with PA predominating in the fiber-rich fraction. However, because influent and effluent 24 h time-composite samples were not hydraulic retention time (HRT)-paired and FTIR interpretation was based on a selected subset of particles, the dataset is best interpreted as describing spatiotemporal variability during the study period rather than robust process-specific removal efficiency. Overall, the results support WWTPs as an ongoing pathway for MP release to receiving environments. Aleksic, Sajad Alipour, Dalibor Ballian, Heba Bedair, Faruk Bogunić, Marwan Cheikh Albassatneh, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Purpose of Review While 38% of tree species are at risk of extinction worldwide, their inventory and occurrence at ecologically and biogeographically meaningful scales is lacking in many parts of the world, including the biodiversity-rich Mediterranean region. Here, we provide presence/absence, extinction risk, biogeography and genetic diversity data of trees in 39 climatically and ecologically Mediterranean territories (so-called “botanical territories”) in North Africa, Western Asia and Southern Europe. Recent Findings The inventory includes 496 species and 147 subspecies from 50 families and 111 genera, including 48 species and 8 subspecies previously not considered as trees. We show that native tree species distribution is highly skewed across the tree of life with a few species-rich families such as the Rosaceae and the majority with less than 1% of all species. Endemism was not evenly distributed among botanical territories and neither was extinction risk, an assessment of which was lacking in almost half of the species. While no geographic trends were detectable, species richness was found to be positively correlated with botanical territory area and, when standardized by area, with habitat heterogeneity. Information on genetic diversity was lacking in two thirds of the species inventoried and mostly focused on species with economic importance. Summary Our data are open access and can be used by researchers and stakeholders for a wide range of purposes, including conservation and restoration. Our findings identified major native tree richness hotspots as well as key knowledge gaps and biases related to extinction risk and genetic diversity. Our findings also emphasize the importance of increased collaboration to support the conservation of Mediterranean forest trees. Notes on Abutilon (Malvaceae) in the Mediterranean and MacaronesiaFilip Verloove, 2025, ni določena Povzetek: Recent field- and herbarium studies in the genus Abutilon in the Mediterranean and Macaronesia yielded some noteworthy results. The invasive South American weed A. grandifolium is reported for the first time from Algeria. A recent claim of A. grandiflorum from the Canary Islands is erroneous and referable to A. grandifolium. Historical records of the South African A. sonneratianum from Madeira are also discussed. This species is included in the list of invasive species in Portugal. However, it is shown that the invasive species in Portugal (Madeira) is A. grandifolium, not A. sonneratianum. 7. Phytocenotic and ecological characteristics of urban river communities invaded by Pistia stratiotes L. and Pontederia crassipes Mart. in UkraineHanna O. Kazarinova, 2025, ni določena Povzetek: Pistia stratiotes L. and Pontederia crassipes Mart. are alien species used in aquarism and aquaculture with a high invasive capacity. The aim of the study was to establish phytocenotic and ecological features of populations of these species in urban river ecosystems. The research was conducted in 2014–2023 on water bodies of the Kharkiv city, Ukraine. Local populations of these species were found in three rivers and vegetation relevés were carried out according to standard phytosociological methods. Alien species occurred with high constancy in the communities of Lemnetea O. de Bolòs et Masclans 1955 and with a minor occurrence in fragments of communities of Phragmito-Magnocaricetea Klika in Klika et Novák 1941. The obtained results of phytoindication show a variability of humidity, aeration, and thermal regime in which the populations of these species occur. The environmental characteristics such as low temperatures, light, salt and nitrogen regime are limiting for occurrence of populations. Climatic and hydrological conditions of the city’s river ecosystems of the city are favorable for spread of communities with the present Pistia stratiotes L. and Pontederia crassipes Mart. Fowkes, Živa Lengar, Valerie Harju, Ian Adams, Adrian Fox, Denis Kutnjak, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Background Aquatic plants play key roles in ecosystems, serving as primary producers and providing habitat for other aquatic life. While many are ecologically important, some invasive species, often introduced through the ornamental plant trade, pose threats to various aquatic ecosystems. Although viral infections have been documented to some extent in aquatic crops, the viral diversity in wild and ornamental aquatic plants remains largely unexplored. Investigating the viral communities of aquatic plants is important, as their direct contact with water allows for the potential long-distance transmission of stable viruses released from infected individuals. Invasive aquatic plants exacerbate this issue by introducing novel microbes, including viruses, to new regions, increasing the potential threat to native plant populations. Results Here, we investigated the viral communities of diverse aquatic plants by mining publicly available transcriptome data of 79 wild aquatic species and sequencing the RNA from 14 plant species (some of them of different ornamental varieties), sourced from hobby aquascaping stores. Plant viruses from various families were detected in taxonomically diverse aquatic plants, ranging from algae to angiosperms. Alongside sequences of known crop pathogens, such as turnip yellows virus, cucumber mosaic virus, and lettuce chlorosis virus, we identified contigs of putative novel viral species belonging to several plant-infecting viral families. Most notably, we discovered sequences of known and novel begomoviruses, which may be causing observed ornamental phenotypes in two different aquatic plants. Further, we identified a novel potyvirus that appears to be globally present in multiple ornamental plants from the genus Sagittaria. We detected it in three plants sourced from online stores in Slovenia, as well as six plants intercepted during the import process into the UK. Conclusions Our findings expand on the so far limited knowledge of aquatic plant viruses, revealing known and putative novel plant viral species across diverse aquatic plant taxa. The detection of crop viruses, including regulated pathogens, in ornamental aquatic plants highlights the risks associated with their unregulated global trade. Further research into viruses of aquatic plants may provide insights into their role in ecosystems as well as their potential impact on agriculture. 9. Characterization of GM events by insert knowledge adapted re-sequencing approachesLitao Yang, Congmao Wang, Arne Holst-Jensen, Dany Morisset, Yongjun Lin, Dabing Zhang, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Detection methods and data from molecular characterization of genetically modified (GM) events are needed by stakeholders of public risk assessors and regulators. Generally, the molecular characteristics of GM events are incomprehensively revealed by current approaches and biased towards detecting transformation vector derived sequences. GM events are classified based on available knowledge of the sequences of vectors and inserts (insert knowledge). Herein we present three insert knowledge-adapted approaches for characterization GM events (TT51-1 and T1c-19 rice as examples) based on paired-end re-sequencing with the advantages of comprehensiveness, accuracy and automation. The comprehensive molecular characteristics of two rice events were revealed with additional unintended insertions comparing with the results from PCR and Southern blotting. Comprehensive transgene characterization of TT51-1 and T1c-19 is shown to be independent of a priori knowledge of the insert and vector sequences employing the developed approaches. This provides an opportunity to identify and characterize also unknown GM events.

10. Evolution of a hybrid zone of willows (Salix L.) in the Alps analysed by RAD-seq and morphometricsPia Marinček, 2022, magistrsko delo Povzetek: Natural hybridization of plants can result in many outcomes with several evolutionary consequences, such as hybrid speciation and introgression. Natural hybrid zones can arise as a result of fluctuating climate during the exchange of glacial and interglacial periods, where species retract and expand their territories, resulting in secondary contacts. On mountain ranges, such as the European Alps, hybrid zones of alpine species are frequently formed where different lineages meet. Willows are a large genus of woody plants with an immense capability of interspecific crossing. About 33 species of this genus inhabit the Alps, where intermediate phenotypes were frequently observed and proclaimed as hybrids, but rarely examined in detail. One of the reasons was a lack of informative molecular markers and suitable analytical tools to analyse this highly diverse and convergent genus. With the development of the RAD-seq technology, several questions regarding willow phylogeny and hybridization could be answered. In this study, a putative hybrid zone of two sister species, S. foetida and S. waldsteiniana, was investigated to study the genomic structure of populations within and outside their contact zone, to find evidence for hybrid speciation or introgression, and to analyse if morphological phenotypes are reflected by their genotypes. Individuals of the two species were sampled across their distribution range in the Alps and examined with the use of RADseq data and morphometric analyses. The results showed that a hybrid zone between the two species was established within the range of their contact zone. Patterns of genetic admixture in homoploid hybrids indicated introgression with asymmetric backcrossing to one of the parental species. Morphometric characteristics of hybrids supported the molecular data and showed intermediacy with a bias towards S. waldsteiniana. Only one potentially divergent hybrid lineage was observed, hinting to a possibility of localised hybrid speciation events.
