Promoting multilingualism and interculturality : the Slovify application for learning the Slovenian language
Maggie Martina Kodba, Melita Zemljak Jontes, Andreja Kozmus, 2026, strokovni članek

Povzetek: Migration is changing education systems worldwide. Due to its geographical location, Slovenia serves as a crossroads of different cultures, attracting immigrants, especially from countries of the former Yugoslavia. Despite the linguistic similarities among South Slavic languages, learning Slovenian can be challenging. International and national education policies emphasise the importance of multilingualism and inclusion; however, implementation is often complex in practice. For example, Slovenian legislation supports learning Slovenian for students and third-country adults but not for adult European Union (EU) citizens, while the preservation of immigrants’ mother tongue depends on local school practices and teachers’ qualifications and social attitudes towards immigrants. To address these differences in access and support, and in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, we developed the Slovify application to improve access and enable initial Slovenian learning for students and other adult Croatian speakers. Besides language learning, Slovify also includes content that familiarises users with Slovenian culture, social norms, and the integration process in a new environment. By combining digital innovations and linguistic and cultural adaptability and by considering global pedagogical standards, the Slovify application is an example of good practice in how educational technology can support inclusion, overcome intercultural barriers, and encourage cooperation.

Perceptions of Majority–Minority Relations, Integration and Social Inclusion : Croatia and Slovenia in Comparative Perspective
Ružica Jakešević, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Povzetek: Many European countries face challenges in integrating members of various minority groups and ensuring their social inclusion, particularly where these groups differ from the majority population on multiple grounds, including ethnicity. Although some of these countries have highly developed legislation for the protection of minority rights, which defines the modes of political, social, cultural, and economic integration of ethnic/national minorities, the development of a plural society often remains unattained in different contexts. Very often, the success of diversity management policies and institutional arrangements stemming from them is used as an indicator of the quality of democracy and democratic legitimacy in a given society. This paper explores majority–minority relations, integration, and the social inclusion of distinct minority groups in Croatia and Slovenia, based on research results obtained within the international research project Legitimate Crisis Governance in Multilevel Systems (LEGITIMULT). To contextualize the results of research examining how members of ethnic/national minorities perceived the legitimacy, proportionality, and democratic nature of crisis governance during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was one of the project’s focal points, the introductory questions in the interview protocol addressed assessments of majority–minority relations, integration, and the social inclusion of minority members in four European states. This paper focuses on comparing the research findings from Croatia and Slovenia, which share similar historical backgrounds and contexts in which their minority rights protection models were shaped, while also reflecting different approaches, local specificities, and historical circumstances that influenced the formation of minority communities recognized within the legislative framework.

Evaluation of a multilingual kindergarten model in Slovenia : insights from teachers, parents and children
Mojca Žefran, Silva Bratož, Sonja Rutar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: This paper presents an in-depth evaluation of a Multilingual Kindergarten Model (MU-KI Koper) developed in Slovenia aimed at integrating pluralistic approaches to language learning into early childhood education. The model activities were carried out over a period of nine months. The data were collected through focus group discussions with parents and in-service preschool teachers engaged in the implementation of the model, an online questionnaire for parents and through semi-structured interviews with the children (aged 5-6) involved in the model implementation. We explored the efficacy of the model by focusing on the following categories: the suitability and perception of effectiveness of the activities in meeting the needs of the pre-school curriculum in the area of developing multilingual competences, the children’s response to the programme, and the parents’ expectations and their feedback on meeting their expectations regarding the implementation of the model. The findings reveal that the Multilingual Kindergarten Model effectively supports children’s cognitive, linguistic and affective development through age- and developmentally-appropriate activities, while fostering early language awareness, positive attitudes towards languages and cultural curiosity.

Finding a largest-area triangle in a terrain in near-linear time
Sergio Cabello, Arun Kumar Das, Sandip Das, Joydeep Mukherjee, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: A terrain is an $x$-monotone polygon whose lower boundary is a single line segment. We present an algorithm to find in a terrain a triangle of largest area in $O(n\log n)$ time, where $n$ is the number of vertices defining the terrain. The best previous algorithm for this problem has a running time of $O(n^2)$.

Gene expression profiling of recombinant protein producing E. coli at suboptimal growth temperature
Mitja Mahnič, Špela Baebler, Andrej Blejec, Špela Jalen, Kristina Gruden, Viktor Menart, Simona Jevševar, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Recent studies have revealed that at lower cultivation temperatures (25 °C) much higher percentage of correctly folded recombinant hG-CSF protein can be extracted from inclusion bodies. Hence, the goal of our research was to investigate mechanisms determining characteristics of non-classical inclusion bodies production using gene expression profiling, focusing on proteases and chaperones gene expression. Statistical analysis of microarray data showed prominent changes in energy metabolism, in metabolism of amino acids and nucleotides, as well as in biosynthesis of cofactors and secondary metabolites if the culture was grown below its optimal temperature. Moreover, 24 differentially expressed up to now known genes classified among proteases, chaperones and other heat or stress related genes. Among chaperones UspE and among proteases YaeL and YeaZ might play an important role in accumulation of correctly folded recombinant proteins. Membrane localized protease yaeL gene was found to have higher activity at 25 °C and is thus potentially functionally related to the more efficient recombinant protein production at lower temperatures. The results of this study represent advance in the understanding of recombinant protein production in E. coli. Genes potentially influencing production of recombinant protein at lower growth temperature represent basis for further research towards improvement of E. coli production strains as well as fermentation process.
