The Effect of Cultural Policies in Reza Shah’s Period on the Status of Religious Minorities’ Schools in Sanandaj (Jews and Christians)Reza Dehghani, Rahmat Hajimineh, Hossein Rassouli, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: After assuming power in 1925, Reza Shah promoted and strengthened nationalism in Iran and moved toward nation-building and enhancing national unity. Since the very beginning of his rule, the Reza Shah government paid contributions to foreign and national schools belonging to religious minorities with the intention to gradually oblige them to follow the Ministry of Education’s programs. The present research has adopted a descriptive-explanatory approach, taking advantage of primary sources, not available to the previous authors, in order to analyze Reza Shah’s cultural policies and the effect of these policies on the position of Jewish and Christian minority schools in Sanandaj. 3. Valuable Ancient Remnants and Superstitious Foolishness : Religiosity, Nationalism, and Enchantment in Slovenian Folklore of the 19th CenturyAnja Mlakar, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Based on Slovenian folklore from the second half of the 19th century, the paper addresses the unexplored topic of the intermixing of folklore with Catholicism and the role of this folklore in the process of Slovenian nation building. Based on an analysis of articles published in the newspaper Kmetijske in rokodelske novice, the author of the paper reveals an inconsistent discourse with regard to the vernacular Slovenian religiosity: everything associated with Christianity is praised, while nonChristian folklore elements are either praised (“Pagan remnants”) or condemned (“superstition”). In the search for enchantment, which is seemingly disappearing due to modernisation, Slovenian intellectuals projected the wonderous into the past and the lower levels of society. Vernacular religiosity in 19th century Slovenian lands is distinctly multilayered and eludes moral evaluations and any attempts to control it. The original contribution of the article is an analysis of the use and reinterpretation of folklore with religious elements in the process of Slovenian nation building and the role of the concept of „enchantment“ in the perception of folklore at that time. 4. Exchanging the “Progressive Experiences” in a Transnational Perspective : Nationality, Economy and Federalism in Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia in the 1960sTomaž Ivešić, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This paper focuses on the transnational aspects of the exchanges of experiences (in nationality policies, economy, and federalization) between the Yugoslav and Czechoslovak intellectual elites. By drawing parallels between the two cases, a striking resemblance can be seen. While Slovak intellectual elites used Yugoslavia as a role model to solve the Czechoslovak national question, the latter also served as one of the models for the economic reform of Ota Šik and for the federal transformation of the Czechoslovak state under Zdeněk Mlynář’s watch. 5. The Non-uniformity of the Church : Language Diversity and the Roman Catholic Dioceses in late Habsburg AustriaTamara Scheer, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The Roman Catholic Church is often spoken of in the singular. This article argues that this was not applicable for language politics. The many dioceses in late Habsburg Austria approached the organization of language use differently, whether it be the internal language use, the ordinariate language, or the daily language use in the many parishes. The reasons for this varied organization were mixed: so called historical traditions, but most importantly, individuals acting, on top bishops. Beside, many priests actively took part in local (nationalist) language discourse, and bishops judged their activity differently. 6. The Sociology of Hate SpeechVeronika Bajt, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Hate speech reflects and reinforces underlying prejudices and structural inequalities, functioning as a mechanism to maintain existing power dynamics and social hierarchies. It is a multifaceted sociological phenomenon that intersects with the multileveled concepts of nationalism, racism, gender, and migration. This article argues that a comprehensive understanding of these intersections is necessary to sociologically analyse hate speech, revealing this interplay between systemic power structures and individual prejudices. This is necessary if we are to understand and mitigate the rising influence of hate speech in society. 8. Transforming language ideologies in the Styrias and in PrekmurjeJakob Wiedner, Alja Lipavic Oštir, Chiara Wagner, Dorian Penšek-Rader, Jernej Čelofiga, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The article examines how monolingual ideologies shape language policies and identities in the Slovenian-Austrian border region through a qualitative analysis of interviews. Rooted in ethno-linguistic nationalism, these ideologies continue to influence language policies, particularly through linguistic purism and a persistent "discourse of threat". Monolingual narratives often overlook historical multilingual realities and cross-border communities. Interview data show that younger generations are shifting toward linguistic pragmatism, embracing local dialects, English, and a European identity. Overall, while nationalistic discourses still linger, generational change and EU integration foster a more inclusive understanding of languages and identities in the region. 9. The remaking and unmaking of multi-ethnic spaces : Diyarbakir and Southeast Anatolia in the 21st centuryWilliam Gourlay, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Focusing on 21st century developments in southeast Anatolia, this article exa-mines the circumstances of minority communities within the contexts of the shifting dynamics of Turkey’s national project. Until the early 20th century southe-ast Anatolia was an ethnic patchwork. The early republican era saw efforts to “Turkify” through the promulgation of a national identity project asserting eth-nic unity. From the 1980s, conflict with the PKK gave urgency to the notion that uniformity was paramount for national cohesion. In this milieu, ethnic diversity was suspect. Circumstances changed with the AKP government’s 2002 ascendance and the earlier emergence of Kurdish municipal politicians. This article documents how thereafter the re-imagining of the national project away from an exclusive eth-nic categorisation allowed acknowledgement and accommodation of ethnic and religious diversity across southeast Anatolia. The chapter analyses these events in light of a backlash by nationalist politicians, the 2015 re-ignition of the PKK con-flict and the subsequent resurgence of nationalist rhetoric in the political arena. It appears a narrow, exclusive national identity is re-asserting itself. The article thus examines the extent to which the experience of south-eastern Anatolia represents the re-imagining of Turkey’s national project and the embrace of a previously de-nied multi-ethnic socio-political fabric.
