Enhancing the performance of ▫$BaTi_{0.89}S_{0.11}O_3$▫/ PVDF‑HFP composites through tailored functionalization of barium stannate titanate ▫$(BaTi_{0.89}S_{0.11}O_3)$▫ fillers

Povzetek: Nanocomposites are currently attracting significant attention in the energy sector, particularly for storage applications. However, controlling interfacial compatibility remains a challenge. This work introduces a novel interfacial functionalization strategy that enables the achievement of exceptional dielectric properties and addresses the persistent issue of poor filler–matrix interaction in nanocomposites. A poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) matrix was filled with lead-free BaTi0.89Sn0.11O3 (BTS11) nanoparticles, which exhibit ultra-high piezoelectric performance near ambient temperature. These nanoparticles were functionalized with various modifying agents, including ethylenediamine (EDA), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polydopamine (PDA), and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS). The study demonstrated that the functionalized HO-BTS11@modifier/PVDF-HFP nanocomposites exhibit distinct dielectric characteristics depending on the modifying agent. The HO-BTS11@EDA/PVDF-HFP nanocomposites, which included hydroxylated HO-BTS11 nanoparticles modified with EDA, outperformed other modified systems with the maximum energy storage efficiency (~ 77%) and a dielectric permittivity of 70 at 1 kHz. EDA with small molecular size, low polarity, and ability to form hydrogen bonds enable improved interfacial adhesion with the hydrophobic PVDF-HFP matrix making the composite suitable for enhancing energy storage performance. This selective functionalization strategy not only provides new insights into interface engineering but also offers a promising pathway for the development of high-performance materials for energy storage and harvesting devices, embedded capacitors, flexible electronics, and next-generation dielectric systems.

Povzetek: Novel nanoadsorbents demonstrate the potential to efficiently eliminate harmful substances, such as Hg2+, from the environment while preserving ecological balance. However, the search for environmentally-friendly nanomaterials as ideal adsorbents, as well as the development of suitable synthesis protocols, remains a challenge. This study presents an effective thermal-sonication technique for producing unique de novo tris-s-triazine carbon nitride nanosheets decorated with magnetite nanoparticles (M-g-CN). The structural integrity and chemical properties of the M-g-CN nanocomposite were extensively characterized using a battery of analytical instruments, including FTIR, SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, AFM, Raman, and NMR. The obtained data, along with the analysis results, are discussed in detail. The novel synthesis method yields a high percentage (97.7%) of stable, highly selective, and reusable M-g-CN (40 mg mL−1). The resulting M-g-CN effectively binds Hg2+, with binding efficiencies of 96.0%, 97.5%, 98.2%, and 99.4% for Hg2+ concentrations of 50 pg mL−1 in marine, stream, precipitation, and ultra-pure matrices, respectively. Also, the magnetite-decorated particles can be easily retrieved using an applied magnetic field. This greener and scalable synthesis method does not require harsh chemicals, making it cost-effective, eco-friendly, and non-toxic compared to other technologies such as carbon filters, ion exchange resins, chemical precipitation, membrane filtration, electrochemical methods, and biological remediation. Overall, the synthesized M-g-CN exhibits wide-ranging potential applications, particularly as a green adsorbent in passive samplers or materials for remediation purposes.

Povzetek: We have developed a significantly enhanced method for the effective and homogeneous decoration of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) flakes with gold (Au) and platinum (Pt) nanoparticles. This method involves the direct nucleation of nanoparticles on the surface of dispersed GO through a single-step reaction. By carefully controlling the stepwise introduction of gold and platinum complexes at elevated temperatures, without additional reducing agents, we successfully achieved a homogeneous distribution of Au and Pt nanoparticles, ∼ 20 nm and ∼ 3 nm in size, densely covering the GO sheets. The decoration yield in a mass ratio between Au and GO was up to 20 %. Reduced GO with attached gold and platinum nanoparticles was obtained using ascorbic acid as a reducing agent. Finally, we embedded Au-decorated r-GO in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to form a composite. We show how this stable hybrid material composite can be spin-coated to form a thin thermoelastic film on a flexible substrate, enabling promising photoacoustic properties that could be exploited further in biomedical applications.
