Jawad, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The present study represents the first research of morphological asymmetry in the eye lens diameter and three otolith features (otolith length, width, and weight) examined in the mullet species Chelon auratus collected from the Mediterranean coast and the Ain Ziana Lagoon, Libya. The asymmetry value for the eye lens diameter was the highest among the four morphological characters studied, and higher for the Ain Ziana Lagoon than for the Mediterranean coast of Libya. The study also showed that the asymmetry value increased with the fish’s total length. Plausible reasons for asymmetry in the four morphological traits examined are discussed in relation to the inconstancy in growth induced by ecological factors, including differences in water temperature, salinity, depth, and contaminants present in the marine waters of Libya and the Ain Ziana Lagoon. 3. Uncovering two freshwater brown algae Bodanella lauterborni and Heribaudiella fluviatilis in Serbia (Southeast Europe)Aleksandra B. Rakonjac, Tijana Veličković, Kristina A. Markeljić, Nevena B. Zimmermann and Heribaudiella fluviatilis (Areschoug) Svedelius are members of brown algae (Phaeophyceae) that exclusively inhabit freshwater habitats. Heribaudiella fluviatilis is the most frequently reported freshwater brown alga, widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. In contrast, B. lauterborni, one of the rarest algae globally, has been reported in only four glacial Alpine lakes and has not been observed in nature for nearly 50 years. Since 2019, the species has been considered locally extinct at its type locality, and its presence in the other three lakes is also questionable. Here, we report the occurrence of B. lauterborni in three springs on the Vlasina Plateau (Southeast Serbia), being the first finding of the species in Southeast Europe and the fifth discovery globally in environmental conditions not previously described for the species. We also provide detailed data on the morphology, ecology, and biogeography of B. lauterborni and H. fluviatilis. Additionally, we report the non-obligate association Hildenbrandio rivularis-Heribaudielletum fluviatilis discovered in two rivers. Our findings significantly expand the known ecological and geographical range of phaeophytes, highlighting Southeast Europe as a refugium for freshwater Phaeophyceae biodiversity. Morozovska, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: We investigate the impact of OH− ions incorporation on the lattice strain and spontaneous polarization of BaTiO3 nanorods synthesized under different conditions. It was confirmed that the lattice strain depends directly on Ba supersaturation, with higher supersaturation leading to an increase in the lattice strain. However, it was shown that crystal growth and observed lattice distortion are not primarily influenced by external strain; rather, OH− ions incorporation plays a key role in generating internal chemical strains and driving these processes. By using the less reactive TiO2 precursor instead of TiOCl2 and controlling Ba supersaturation, the slower nucleation rate enables more effective regulation of OH− ions incorporation and crystal growth. This in turn effects both particle size and lattice distortion, leading to �/� ratio of 1.013–1.014. The incorporation of OH− ions induces lattice elongation along the � axis, contributing to anisotropic growth, increasing of the rod diameter and their growth-induced bending. However, the possibility of the curvature-induced changes in domain morphology of BaTiO3 nanorods remains almost unexplored. To study the possibility, we perform analytical calculations and finite element modeling, which provide insights into the curvature-induced changes in the strain-gradient, polarization distribution, and domain morphology in BaTiO3 nanorods. Theoretical results reveal the appearance of the domain stripes in BaTiO3 nanorod when the curvature exceeds a critical angle. The physical origin of the domain stripes emergence is the tendency to minimize the elastic energy of the nanorod by the domain splitting. These findings suggest that BaTiO3 nanorods, with curvature-controllable amount of domain stripes, could serve as flexible race-track memory elements for flexotronics and domain-wall electronics. Overall, this work enhances the understanding of how the shape anisotropy, lattice strains, and strain gradients influence the domain morphology of ferroelectric nanorods, offering a pathway for tuning properties of the nanorods for advanced applications in nanoelectronics. However, a particular challenge in the simulation of multiphase flows is the occurrence of different morphologies or flow regimes, i.e. dispersed vs. segregated. The established simulation frameworks that have been developed over the years are usually only applicable to a specific morphology and level of detail. The simulation of a combination of morphologies is particularly challenging, and adaptive approaches are sought where the trade-off between level of detail and time to solution is mainly a matter of spatial resolution, rather than the fundamental choice of a method. In this respect, the Euler-Euler model has crucial properties that make it a good basis. This paper gives an overview of existing morphology-adaptive Eulerian methods, also often referred to as hybrid Eulerian methods. It is the result of a joint effort of the Dresden6 initiative, a loose association of research groups already active in this field. It gives an honest picture of current shortcomings and future development prospects. The aim of the work is to start a homogenization process by establishing a common terminology and listing suitable test cases that can be used for benchmarking, i.e. verification and validation. 8. Considerations on the morphological features and phylogeny of the hypogeous gasteroid genera Sclerogaster and Wakefieldia (Basidiomycota) in North MacedoniaSlavica Tofilovska Kamiševska, Hermann Voglmayr, Irmgard Krisai-Greilhuber, Tine Grebenc, Mitko Karadelev, Katerina Rusevska, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The genera Sclerogaster and Wakefieldia are infrequently reported, especially from poorly studied regions of the Balkan Peninsula. Research on hypogeous fungi in North Macedonia has been advancing steadily in recent years, leading to a growing number of collections in the Macedonian Collection of Fungi. Molecular phylogenetic and morphological observations of deposited specimens of Sclerogaster and Wakefieldia were performed, and compared with collections from other areas and sequences in nucleotide databases. Molecular genetic diversity based on rDNA ITS and LSU markers and morphological characteristics of the specimens from two genera are presented, and information on their ecology is provided. Two species of Sclerogaster: S. hysterangioides, reported for the first time for the Balkan Peninsula, and S. compactus, a second record for the Balkan Peninsula, were distinguished. Sclerogaster hysterangioides was found in different habitat types at four sites, while S. compactus was present at only one site in a riparian community of Populus alba and Ulmus laevis. The genus Wakefieldia is represented with a single species, W. macrospora, in Europe. Our collections, which constitute the second records for the Balkan Peninsula, originate from mixed deciduous forest of Quercus pubescens and Carpinus orientalis. The phylogenetic analyses confirm the morphological identification of the voucher specimens as S. hysterangioides and W. macrospora. The investigation of hypogeous fungi in North Macedonia demonstrates the rich diversity of this ecological group of fungi, and calls for future studies including comprehensive morphological observations and additional molecular markers. 9. Deciphering crystal growth in a sector-zoned interpenetration twin of loparite from Mt Khibiny (Kola Peninsula, Russia) through atomic-scale characterisation of growth sectors and twin boundariesNina Daneu, José Alberto Padrón-Navarta, Martin Šala, Kristina Mervič, Gerlinde Habler, Goran Dražić, Petruša Borštnar, Aleksander Rečnik, Rainer Abart, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Loparite is a natural perovskite (ABO3) with a complex composition, essentially a solid solution between loparite(-Ce) (Na0.5Ce0.5TiO3), lueshite (NaNbO3), and perovskite (CaTiO3), with small amounts of many other elements. The majority of reported loparite crystals are spinel-type interpenetration twins with compositional zoning. Associated with the high variability of compositions, different crystal structures of loparite were described, and the origin of twinning has not been addressed so far. In this work, we studied a loparite twin composed of two symmetrically intergrown cuboctahedra. Microprobe analyses revealed that the cubic and octahedral growth sectors have slightly different compositions. According to atomic-scale analyses, the cubic sectors with a lower Na:LREE ratio have a disordered orthorhombic structure, while the octahedral sectors with a higher Na:LREE ratio show partial ordering of Na and light rare-earth elements along A-type lattice planes in the [001] direction. The degree of ordering was evaluated by quantitative high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). Atomic-scale analyses of (111) and {112} twin boundary (TB) contacts have shown that all TBs contain a 1–2 nm thin layer of an Si-rich amorphous phase. Our observations suggest that the loparite twin was established in the nucleation stage of crystallisation, followed by independent crystallisation of both twin domains from the melt. The initial crystal form was cubic; octahedral sectors evolved when the crystal size was still in the nanometre range, as a result of slow crystal growth. Differences in structural ordering between adjacent growth sectors developed during slow cooling due to the compositional variations. Our results imply that compositionally zoned crystals might show different structural ordering within single domains, which should be considered when interpreting bulk diffraction data of compositionally zoned perovskites. 10. History and biology of the "black proteus" (Proteus anguinus parkelj Sket & Arntzen 1994; Amphibia: Proteidae): a reviewLilijana Bizjak-Mali, Boris Sket, 2019, pregledni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Proteus anguinus parkelj Sket & Arntzen 1994 is a black pigmented with developed eyes, non-troglomorphic, but yet troglobiotic subspecies of P. anguinus Laurenti 1786. It is endemic to the karst of Bela krajina in southeast Slovenia. As a probable mimic of the epigean ancestor it is very informative regarding adaptation to subterranean environment. Since it was discovered only in 1986, relatively little is known about its biology. The purpose of this review paper is to summarize the published data about the circumstances of its discovery, its distribution, phylogeny, taxonomy and its biology, including environmental threats, conservation status, and actions that are being taken to ensure its survival. The exceedingly limited distribution of the black proteus makes it particularly vulnerable. It is endangered by environmental pollution as well as by various potential pathogens that are of global concern to amphibians. Populations of the black proteus are in dire need of protection if they are to survive in their own natural habitat.
