1. Banditry in Zeta in the Balšić Period (1360–1421)Marijan Premović, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This paper is an attempt to research and present banditry in Zeta against Dubrovnik merchants during the reign of the Balšići (1360–1421). The research has been mostly based upon analysis of documentation from the State Archives in Dubrovnik: Lamenta de foris (Note 1–4), Debita Notariae (Note 8), Diversa Cancellariae (Note 30) as well as upon some historical literature. In the first part of the work, land and sea routes between Dubrovnik and Zeta were presented as well as legislative regulations dealing with robbery and banditry prevention on the ground. In the second part, according to some separated and written documents (complaints), the banditry was presented chronologically, as a specific form of micro-history, describing the daily routines and destinies of merchants and ordinary people. Furthermore, names of bandits and victims were identified, as well as goods that were robbed on the territory of Zeta. In this paper, the author defines banditry, as well as all other illegal acts, that resulted in violence against merchants from Dubrovnik, by seizing their property by force. 2. Feuding and Peacemaking among Peasants in Seventeenth-Century DenmarkJeppe Büchert Netterstrøm, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This article discusses instances of feud-like behaviour, enmities and peacemaking among peasants in seventeenth-century Denmark. It provides examples of early modern peasants declaring enmities, exacting vengeance, committing various forms of feud-related violence and making private peace settlements, and discusses whether such practices may be seen in continuation of late medieval peasant feuds. It is concluded that while such behaviours and mentalities were indeed rooted in earlier conflict resolution paradigms, they need to be interpreted in the context of social change, not least state-making, pacification and criminalisation, in order to estimate their significance and avoid selective use of evidence. 3. Women, foreigners in their urban communities?Veronika Kos, ni določena Povzetek: Much like elsewhere, terms such as the Latin forensis and its German equivalents in mediaeval and early modern sources in the area of today’s Slovenia refer to a broad variety of individuals and social groups. From residents of neighbouring towns and all others from the near or distant surroundings, particularly during the early phase of their integration within a specific urban settlement, to individuals who formed a constant migration or business flow of passers-by, such as intellectuals, artisans, pilgrims, merchants, artists, as well as members of marginalised groups (e.g. beggars and vagrants). Individuals from different socioeconomic, religious, or social backgrounds who lived in cities also had a quality of ‘strangeness’ attached to them (e.g. Jews), although their contemporaries never explicitly called them strangers. Studies that have focused on the urban experiences of women in pre-modern cities have also drawn attention to the relative strangeness of women in cities compared to male citizens. While normative sources generally do not treat women in pre-modern European cities as foreigners, their lives may have been somewhat similar to those of foreigners and other (established) city dwellers who were associated with a particular kind of foreignness because of the relative restrictions or exclusions imposed by law, religion, science etc. This paper deals with the status of urban women during the transition from the Late Middle Ages to the early modern period, with a special emphasis on the region between the Upper Adriatic and the Eastern Alps. With an analysis of the urban statutes of the coastal communes (Izola, Koper, and Piran) and the mainland Ptuj, as well as other relevant materials, attention will be paid to the research question: How useful is it to think about women as foreigners in their urban communities? 4. Apprentices from the Zeta Littoral in Late Medieval RagusaMarijan Premović, Vasilij Jovović, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This paper examines the arrival of apprentices from Zeta to Ragusa (today’s Dubrovnik) between 1360 and 1421, a period that coincides with the rule of the Balšić dynasty in Zeta. The research is mostly based on the analysis of unpublished original material from the State Archives in Dubrovnik and relevant historical literature. The first part of the paper presents a general overview of data on crafts and the presence and activity of Zetans in Ragusa, lists the economic benefits of migration to the city, and sheds light on how young men started their apprenticeships. In the second part, archival material allows us to reconstruct the microhistory of the arrival of young men from the settlements and areas of Budva, Bar, Ratac, Spič, Pilot, Ulcinj, Shkodër, and the wider Zeta region to Ragusa. The details include the names of the young artisans, the frequency of their arrivals, and the duration of their apprenticeships. The paper also explores the status of these young men who migrated to the city and analyses their migratory movements by interpreting sources from the State Archives of Dubrovnik. 6. The Genesis of Koper Medieval Statutes (1238–1423)Darko Darovec, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This paper presents an original analysis and reinterpretation of two documents from 1238 and 1239, which are the first to mention the Koper statutes but have thus far received only sporadic mentions in historiography. The paper is further predicated on the study of archival sources of the Venetian Senate from the Senato Misti collection for the period after the Koper rebellion against Venice in 1348 up until 1394 when the Doge of Venice reconfirmed the Koper statutes. It is established that at least from 1238 the commune of Koper acted according to its already complex statutes. These were, with some further redactions, in force until 1348, when, due to the rebellion of Koper, they were disregarded by the Venetian authorities until 1358, along with the dissolution of the city’s Major Council, and all of Koper’s city offices were restructured. After 1358, the sources testify that the Venetians restored the Koper City Council and offices to their pre-rebellion state, but not the statutes, although some statutory provisions were taken into account in individual administrative or judicial cases. The Koper statutes officially came into force again in 1394, and a slightly modified redaction appeared in 1423. However, in both cases without the right to exercise criminal justice and the defence of the city, which remained in the exclusive domain of the Venetian podestà and captain until the end of the Venetian Republic in 1797. 8. Tracing factions and power struggles in late medieval TrogirAnte Bećir, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The paper traces the political agency of factions in late medieval Trogir, by focusing on the most important cases of open conflicts during the 14th and 15th century. Factional power struggles represented a typical feature of Italian communes, and the Trogir case study implies an excellent example of how the political culture in Dalmatian towns resembled greatly that in the Italian communes. Factional blocs were based on political, familial or business ties and headed by powerful nobles or noble lineages. To secure their positions, noble families in Trogir often formed alliances with other noble families and groups within the commoner majority or with extra-communal power holders. However, these alliances could easily be unstable and easily broken, and that only increased intrigue and uncertainty in the political life. The goal of the paper is to contribute to our understanding of the political culture in the late medieval Dalmatian towns within a comparative framework. 9. Rethinking Ethnic Identity in the Archaeology of the Ancient SlavsBenjamin Štular, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The archaeology of the ancient Slavs has advanced methodologically but remains divided between scholars who deny the Slavs’ migrations, and those linking material culture directly to ethnic identities. This paper seeks to bridge this divide by reassessing the theoretical framework for studying the ancient Slavs. It critiques the historical development of research on ethnic identity in archaeology, highlighting limitations in both primordialist and instrumentalist models. Instead, we propose redefining archaeological culture as a polythetic commonality of practice rooted in learned social behaviours. This framework permits identifying ethnic identities in the archaeological record without relying on texts. Applying this approach to the Prague-culture-assemblage archaeological culture, we demonstrate shared practices in language, housing, dress, sustenance, social relations, and genetic relatedness. Our findings confirm that the ancient Slavs existed as both an archaeological culture and a distinct identity group with strong collective self-awareness. 10. “Molt greignour senefiance" : The Role of Interpreters in The Quest of the Holy GrailAlenka Koželj, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: In the 13th-century French romance The Quest of the Holy Grail various interpreters appear, who—through Christian hermeneutics—explain to the knights of the quest their dreams, visions, prophecies, etc. The present article discusses the question of the source of authority of the interpreters, and analyzes in the text itself the foundations of such an authority. One of the most important starting points is the presupposition that the procedures of biblical exegesis influenced the romance and the image of the interpreter.
