Stabilization of dredged marine sediment using biopolymer

Povzetek: The frequent dredging of sediments from port areas often leads to the rapid accumulation of excess material, potentially resulting in landfill challenges. Dredged marine sediments typically exhibit high water content, a significant proportion of fine-grained soil, limited bearing capacity, substantial settlement tendencies, and low shear strength. Addressing these issues is imperative for construction projects on such soil types. Recent trends in soil stabilization have witnessed the rising popularity of sustainable bio-binders, particularly biopolymers, owing to their environmentally friendly attributes and extensive use in various geoenvironmental applications. This study investigates the utilization of four different types of biopolymers for the stabilization of marine dredged sediment sourced from the Port of Koper, Slovenia. The research investigates the influence of biopolymer incorporation on the geotechnical properties of biopolymer-treated sediment through Atterberg limits and cone falling tests. In addition, samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to elucidate the interaction between biopolymer and the sediment. The findings demonstrate a significant enhancement of undrained shear strength with the addition of biopolymers to the sediment. The formation of hydrogel within the soil pores not only increases the sediment consistency but also positively affects the soil's shear strength.

Current knowledge on the distribution of the poorly known echiurid species Maxmuelleria gigas (M. Müller, 1852) in the Slovenian Sea

Povzetek: In September 2024, a specimen of Maxmuelleria gigas (M. Müller, 1852) was found during a monitoring campaign in the Bay of Koper. This record is the second one of this less known macrobenthic species in the Slovenian Sea and one among few up to date reported in the Adriatic Sea, as well. Sediment mounds observed with an underwater video sledge on muddy bottom in the southern part of the Gulf of Trieste have been related to this species. The species distribution and density (47 per 100 m2) were estimated based on the quantification of the observed sediment mounds. The potential underestimation of the density and distribution of this species in the Gulf of Trieste in the past studies is discussed in relation to sampling method.

An evaluation of marine sediments in terms of their usability in the brick industry : case study Port of Koper

Povzetek: A dredging process is essential for the development of harbours and ports, allowing the functional daily operation of the port. The management of dredged material represents a worldwide challenge, especially considering unwanted deposition of material. Because of their chemical, petrographic, mineralogical and homogeneity composition, marine sediments could represent an appropriate raw material for the brick industry, particularly for the production of clay blocks, roofing and ceramic tiles. In this study dredged material from Port of Koper was tested for such use, thus various analyses were carried out in order to determine if the dredged material is environmentally friendly and suitable for use in the brick industry. These included: chemical analysis, mineralogical analysis, particle size analysis, chloride content analysis and tests of firing in a gradient furnace. Furthermore, tests of mechanical properties, as well as tests of the frost-resistance of the samples were carried out. On the basis of the primary analyses and samples prepared in a laboratory, it was confirmed that marine sediments from the Port of Koper, without any additives are only conditionally suitable as a source material for producing brick products, because without additives they exhibit too much shrinkage on drying and firing, as well as high water absorption, this can be improved by the incorporation of suitable additives, for example, virgin clay or other suitable waste material. The approach described herewith can also be followed to assess sediments from other ports and rivers regarding its potential use in clay brick sector.
