Istria as a Site and as a Subject Matter in the Production and Organization of Regional Knowledge : Bibliometric and Sociological Analysis

Povzetek: This study maps, visualizes, evaluates and interprets scientific papers in journals dealing with the site (place) and subject-matter of Istria. The approach is interdisciplinary. The data were taken from the Web of Science (WoS) citation database, processed with the VOSviewer program, and analytically evaluated. The occurrence and distribution of terms in titles and abstracts of articles clustered in characteristic groups of related studies are assumed as topics and agendas. Granulation of clusters reveals differences in research approaches across and within disciplines. Within the natural sciences, distinctive bio- and geological clusters emerge. Social sciences and humanities permeate each other in a single cluster, with marked terminological heterogeneity. The main conclusion is that Istria’s epistemic contexts and methodological approaches manifest themselves on four contextual levels: 1. Istria as a site is one of many topics in a wider context within the natural sciences; 2. here can also be the subject of single narrow and specific topics; 3. nation-specific (state-) can be found in various disciplines; 4. the social sciences and humanities are associated with diverse multicultural, cross-border related topics. The analysis of the organization and production of knowledge suggests that the multifaceted and elusive regional character of scientific endeavors co-shapes Istria’s evolving specific supranational sociocultural identity.

Transforming knowledge systems for life on Earth : visions of future systems and how to get there

Povzetek: Formalised knowledge systems, including universities and research institutes, are important for contemporary societies. They are, however, also arguably failing humanity when their impact is measured against the level of progress being made in stimulating the societal changes needed to address challenges like climate change. In this research we used a novel futures-oriented and participatory approach that asked what future envisioned knowledge systems might need to look like and how we might get there. Findings suggest that envisioned future systems will need to be much more collaborative, open, diverse, egalitarian, and able to work with values and systemic issues. They will also need to go beyond producing knowledge about our world to generating wisdom about how to act within it. To get to envisioned systems we will need to rapidly scale methodological innovations, connect innovators, and creatively accelerate learning about working with intractable challenges. We will also need to create new funding schemes, a global knowledge commons, and challenge deeply held assumptions. To genuinely be a creative force in supporting longevity of human and non-human life on our planet, the shift in knowledge systems will probably need to be at the scale of the enlightenment and speed of the scientific and technological revolution accompanying the second World War. This will require bold and strategic action from governments, scientists, civic society and sustained transformational intent.

Rapid evidence mapping of soil fauna responses to agricultural management assisted by large language models

Povzetek: The exponential growth of scientific literature challenges traditional synthesis methods, limiting our ability to derive broad insights into complex environmental processes. Large language models (LLMs) may help address this challenge by supporting the extraction of structured knowledge from unstructured text. To evaluate and demonstrate this potential in soil science, we developed a multi-module, LLM-assisted knowledge-extraction workflow built on a recently published meta-data-analysis of management–biota interactions as a contextual framework, using an iteratively refined prompt chain to extract directional relationships between agricultural management practices and soil fauna from scientific abstracts. Benchmarking against manually curated datasets showed high precision and recall, while expert-guided iterative development indicated that the information content of abstracts was likely a major practical constraint on extraction performance. To assess interpretative soundness, we applied the workflow in two use cases: an illustrative comparison with the well-established literature on reduced and no-tillage effects on soil fauna, and a knowledge-gap application on biochar and crop-residue retention. The workflow indicated predominantly beneficial reported patterns for crop residue retention, particularly for earthworms and nematodes, whereas biochar showed a more heterogeneous and context-dependent pattern. Overall, results show that LLM-assisted workflows can support rapid, large-scale evidence mapping of soil fauna responses to management practices when formal quantitative syntheses are unavailable. The proposed framework is best understood as a complementary tool for organising and screening dispersed ecological evidence, and not as a substitute for full-text synthesis, effect-size-based meta-analysis, or decision-grade inference. The complete workflow is publicly available and broadly transferable across environmental research domains.

Teacher knowledge between theory and practice : an epistemological reflection

Povzetek: Knowledge is a fundamental element of a teacher’s professional identity and a key factor in the quality of education. This theoretical paper aims to explore the epistemological perspective of teacher knowledge and reflect on it from the perspective of professional development. It presents an integrative framework composed of six interconnected parts: empiricism (learning from experience and observation), rationalism (gaining knowledge through reasoning and theory), constructivism (building knowledge through interaction and context), pragmatism (using knowledge to solve problems), critical rationalism (seeing knowledge as a hypothesis tested in real life) and social epistemology (understanding knowledge as something shared and created socially). Thus, teacher knowledge is viewed as a dynamic synthesis of different epistemological traditions. Special attention is given to contemporary models of teacher knowledge – Shulman’s pedagogical content knowledge and Mishra and Koehler’s technological pedagogical content knowledge. These models are interpreted through a broader epistemological framework. It is concluded that teacher knowledge is not a static category but a multidimensional and adaptable construct. It emerges from the dialogue between theory and practice and develops through lifelong learning, reflection and professional collaboration. Such an understanding encourages innovative teacher professional development in the contemporary knowledge society.

Data and data quality in mathematics

Povzetek: Pure mathematics is often viewed, even by its practitioners, as a discipline in which data play little or no role. Data, when acknowledged at all, are often seen as a byproduct of research rather than a research product in their own right. Yet databases and datasets are increasingly central to the way mathematicians formulate conjectures, test hypotheses, and explore complex structures. Unlike empirical data, data in mathematics often consist of exact values derived from symbolic definitions or computations and commonly describe highly structured objects such as graphs, elliptic curves, or manifolds. This combination of abstraction, precision, and low redundancy poses distinctive challenges for data quality, shifting the focus away from concerns like noise and bias toward correctness, completeness, consistency, and accessibility.

Competency-based European training requirements for the specialty of ophthalmology : recommendations from the UEMS section of ophthalmology and the European Board of Ophthalmology

Povzetek: Purpose: Ophthalmology encompasses comprehensive medical and surgical care for patients with diverse visual system disorders, significantly impacting eye health, vision, and quality of life. European ophthalmologists undergo specialized residency training to acquire necessary competencies, emphasizing theoretical knowledge, clinical and surgical skills, and professional behaviour. The European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) advocate for competency-based medical education (CBME), standardized training frameworks, and harmonized assessments across Europe. Methods: In 2023, a survey among European ophthalmologists demonstrated broad consensus on establishing unified training requirements. Subsequently, a Core Working Group developed European Training Requirements (ETRs) for ophthalmology, detailing curricula, subspecialty rotations, and Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) across a structured four-year residency. Results: These ETRs, formally approved by UEMS in October 2024, incorporate simulation-based training, workplace-based assessments (WPBA), and innovative evaluation methods such as electronic portfolios. Certification as a European Specialist in Ophthalmology involves passing rigorous summative assessments, including the European Board of Ophthalmology Diploma (EBOD) examination. Training institutions must offer substantial clinical exposure, robust infrastructure, and comprehensive educational resources. Faculty support, continuous quality assurance, regular audits, and clinical governance frameworks are essential. Conclusion: The ETRs also highlight the importance of interprofessional collaboration and encourage subspecialty expansion in emerging areas like ophthalmic oncology and global ophthalmology. Designed as a dynamic, "living document," the ETRs will evolve with scientific and technological advancements, supporting high-quality ophthalmic education and practice while respecting national diversity and sovereignty.
