Everyday Violence and Natural Disasters in Early Modern Treviso : News of Homicides in the Libro Macaronico of Zuanne Mestriner (1682–1731)

Povzetek: Between 1682 and 1731, the barber Zuanne Mestriner recorded many murders that occurred in Treviso. His Libro macaronico is a valuable account of the dynamics that led to a murder in modern times. This ego-document opens a glimpse into everyday interpersonal violence, showing how members of any social class resorted to lethal violence in conflicts that stemmed from seemingly trivial motives. This paper provides the first quantitative and qualitative analysis of this data for the city, measuring the homicide rate and focusing on the characteristics of the clashes. It finds a cause for the high rates of violence in the natural disasters that made urban life precarious.

Women and interpersonal violence in early modern Europe : a comparative study of Languedoc and Ljubljana (1680–1720)

Povzetek: This paper presents a comparative analysis of women’s roles in incidents of interpersonal violence and dispute settlement in early modern Languedoc and Ljubljana, focusing on the period 1680–1720. Predicated on legal sources, criminal cases from the parlement of Toulouse and town council records from Ljubljana, the paper uses case studies from the two courts to challenge the conventional historiographical view of women as passive participants in violent conflict. Despite the methodological challenges inherent in comparing criminal proceedings from two different legal systems, this paper highlights women’s active involvement in violent conflict, thus revealing their agency within patriarchal social structures. By re-examining women’s roles in early modern disputes, this paper argues for a more nuanced understanding of women’s experiences and motivations in their use of verbal and physical violence.
