Postural sway in multiple sclerosis patients : interaction of vision, surface, and fatigue effects
Žiga Kozinc, Eva Žura, Gregor Brecl Jakob, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Introduction: Postural control impairments are common in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), resulting in postural instability and increased fall risk. Sensory inputs are crucial to maintain balance adequately. Additionally, fatigue is one of the common and most disabling symptoms of MS, possibly contributing to postural deficits. Previous studies have examined the effects of fatigue and altered sensory conditions on postural control in patients with MS. The present study aimed to extend this knowledge by jointly assessing these factors within the same experimental framework, providing additional insight into how fatigue modulates sensory contributions to balance. Methods: A total of 21 patients with MS (age = 41.1 ± 10.1 years; EDSS = 1.9 ± 1.0; disease duration = 6.8 ± 4.9 years) completed balance assessments on firm and compliant surfaces with both eyes open and eyes closed, before and after a 6-min walk test used to induce fatigue. Postural sway was quantified using sway velocity and root mean square (RMS). Results: There was a significant effect of surface on sway velocity (p < 0.001, η2 = 0.60), with a greater sway on the compliant surface compared to the firm surface. Fatigue significantly increased sway RMS (p = 0.023, η2 = 0.23) but did not affect sway velocity (p > 0.05). The absence of visual input (eyes closed) also significantly increased sway RMS (p = 0.001, η2 = 0.46). There was a significant interaction between surface and vision for sway RMS (p < 0.001, η2 = 0.54), with a larger effect of surface instability in the eyes-closed condition. Discussion: Patients with MS face increased challenges in maintaining postural control under conditions of fatigue, surface instability, and lack of visual input. Sway RMS may be more sensitive to these effects than sway velocity.

Citizen science for monitoring plastic pollution from source to sea: a systematic review of methodologies, best practices, and challenges
Corinne Corbau, Alexandre Lazarou, Oliver Bajt, Vlatka Filipović Marijić, Tatjana Simčič, Massimo Coltorti, Elisa Pignoni, Umberto Simeoni, 2025, pregledni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Citizen science provides a valuable approach for tracking plastic pollution; however, its effectiveness is often limited by methodological inconsistencies, concerns about data quality, and a persistent gap between data collection and policy implementation. This systematic review addresses the key question: What constitutes a comprehensive set of best practices for addressing these issues and enhancing the scientific and societal impact of citizen science in monitoring plastic pollution from source to sea? Analyzing 84 studies, from beach cleanups to microplastic sampling, this review synthesizes best practices and identifies remaining gaps. It presents a structured framework designed to enhance data quality and volunteer participation. Key challenges include the ‘microplastic analytical bottleneck,’ the ‘digital divide,’ and notable geographical and demographic disparities that hinder the integration of policies. While citizen science is effective for large-scale data collection, its main challenge is translating data into actionable policies. The main contribution of this review is a series of practical recommendations aimed at improving methodological consistency, ensuring fair volunteer participation, and facilitating the transition from citizen data to evidence-based environmental management, thereby enhancing the effectiveness and impact of citizen science.

SWOT-AHP Analysis of the Importance and Adoption of Pumped-Storage Hydropower
Mladen Bošnjaković, Veljić Nataša, Jelena Topić Božič, Simon Muhič, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Abstract Energy storage technologies are becoming increasingly important when it comes to maintaining the balance between electricity generation and consumption, especially with the increasing share of variable renewable energy sources (VRES). Pumped storage hydropower plants (PSHs) are currently the largest form of energy storage at the grid level. The aim of this study is to investigate the importance and prospects of using PSHs as part of the energy transition to decarbonize energy sources. A comparison was made between PSHs and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in terms of technical, economic, and ecological aspects. To identify the key factors influencing the wider adoption of PSHs, a combined approach using SWOT analysis (which assesses strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a decision support tool was applied. Regulatory and market uncertainties (13.54%) and financial inequality (12.77%) rank first and belong to the “Threats” group, with energy storage capacity (10.11%) as the most important factor from the “Strengths” group and increased demand for energy storage (9.01%) as the most important factor from the “Opportunities” group. Forecasts up to 2050 show that the capacity of PSHs must be doubled to enable the integration of 80% of VRES into the grids. The study concludes that PSHs play a key role in the energy transition, especially for long-term energy storage and grid stabilization, while BESSs offer complementary benefits for short-term storage and fast frequency regulation. Recommendations to policymakers include the development of clear, accelerated project approval procedures, financial incentives, and support for hybrid PSH systems to accelerate the energy transition and meet decarbonization targets.

Povzetek: In this paper, we address the role of linguistic diversity in oral performance across the educational vertical. As a possibility for the successful implementation of cross-curricular integration through systematic and contextualised teaching of effective speaking, we present the Framework for Vertical Teaching of Oral Performance, as a basis for a holistic approach to the planning and implementation of pedagogical activities aimed at developing students' communicative competence. In the first part, we define oral performance as a multidimensional component of classical rhetoric and show the necessity of incorporating a rhetorical perspective into the conception of public speaking in education. Complementing classical rhetoric with the concept of oracy, we add a translanguaging approach to establish the link between teaching of spoken language, rhetoric as a process-based formation of a speaker, and the idiolects in the school. Finally, we present the Framework and outline main points that serve as a basis for developing pedagogical practices. The significance of a rhetorical pedagogy, which incorporates the role of institutional recognition of the individual's idiolect, is that it evokes the values of humanistic education, thus going beyond the narrow developing of linguistic skills and therefore constituting a vital part of the education’s general aims and goals.

Perceptions of Ukrainian and other refugees among eighth-graders in Slovenia : characteristics of students towards inclusion of refugee students in mainstream schools
Eva Klemenčič Mirazchiyski, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: There is a lack of empirical data on the school-age population’s attitudes toward refugees. Despite this, the attention being paid to the integration of refugee students in schools worldwide is increasing. Objectives: First, the present study aims to explore the attitudes of eighth-grade students in Slovenia regarding refugees and to investigate whether there are differences in their attitudes based on the geographical areas from where refugees originate. Second, the study also explores the connections between attitudes and some characteristics of students. Methods: The present study is quantitative; sample: 3466 respondents (representative sample; year 2022). Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression are used. Results: Most of the students would be willing to help refugees coming from any country. The students are least willing to help refugees from Syria and Afghanistan or Africa. A high proportion of students express fears about what refugees bring, though these fears are varied. Logistic regression shows that civic knowledge and positive attitudes towards immigrants are significantly and negatively related to students’ opinion that refugee children should study in separate schools, while student socio-economic status (SES) and own immigration status are not. Conclusions: The results call for different approaches to be maintained/introduced in schools for tolerance and reducing prejudices for (certain) groups of immigrants/refugees.

Survey on the attitudes of school community members regarding the role of the language(s) of schooling in the integration process of pupils with an immigrant background in Slovenia
Tina Čok, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In terms of integration policy, Slovenia is considered a country that pro-motes the integration of children with an immigrant background into schools as quickly as possible. However fast the integration process may be, languages always play a key role in the education of pupils with an immigrant background and teachers need to adapt to their different lan-guage needs and literacy levels. Furthermore, it is important that teachers use teaching methods that promote pupils’ linguistic development in their mother tongue as well. In this paper, we present the results of research on the role of languages of schooling in the success of all pupils in Slovenian primary education institutions, with a focus on those with an immigrant background. To achieve this goal, we conducted an anonymous survey (n = 78) among teachers and support staff and interviewed principals from nine Slovenian primary schools. The main aim of the survey and inter-views was to investigate the status and understanding of the role of the languages of schooling in the context of the newly proposed cognitive-in-clusive language didactics based on collaborative learning. The study found that while school staff recognise the importance of multilingual education and linguistic integration, there are significant gaps in training and sup-port mechanisms for teachers. Although schools generally support the use of multiple languages, there is a lack of cross-language awareness and vis-ible promotion of multilingualism in the school environment. The findings of the study suggest the need to introduce comprehensive, standardised training and support for teachers that focuses on improving cross-language awareness and inclusive educational practices, which can ultimately lead to better integration outcomes for immigrant pupils and enrichment of the educational environment for all members of the community.
