Integrated multi-elemental and ▫$^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$▫ isotopic fingerprinting coupled with explainable artificial intelligence for geographical authentication of wheat
Giulia Puzo, Tea Zuliani, Claudia Zoani, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: This study presents an integrated framework combining multi-elemental profiling and 87Sr/86Sr isotopic fingerprinting with machine learning and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) for the geographical authentication of Italian wheat. A total of 122 samples collected from Northern, Central and Southern Italy over two harvest years (2023–2024) were analysed by ICP–MS and MC–ICP–MS. Elemental composition exhibited pronounced interannual variability, whereas the 87Sr/86Sr ratio showed greater temporal stability and a consistent link to geological background. Random Forest models achieved three-class classification accuracies of 0.75 ± 0.08 for 2023 data and 0.81 ± 0.06 for 2024. SHAP analysis identified the isotopic ratio, together with Zn, Ni, Mn and Cu, as the main contributors to classification. Results demonstrate that wheat geographical origin is reliably characterised by an integrated elemental–isotopic signature interpreted through explainable machine learning, supporting provenance assessment across the major Italian macro-areas over different harvest years.

The prediction of climate-driven habitat shifts of the rare and threatened moss Buxbaumia viridis in Slovenia
Djordje P. Božović, Simona Strgulc Krajšek, Lado Kutnar, Janez Kermavnar, Anže Martin Pintar, Marko S. Sabovljević, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Buxbaumia viridis is a peculiar, deadwood-dependent cryptogamous moss characterized by reduced gametophytes and prominent sporophytes that develop directly from the protonema. The species is threatened in many European countries, listed in the EU Habitats Directive (Annex II), and protected under the Bern Convention. We applied ensemble species distribution modelling to project the potential distribution of B. viridis under multiple future climate scenarios and to assess its fate by analyzing the main bioclimatic and habitat factors influencing its survival in Slovenia, on the margin of the south-eastern Alps. The analysis was based on 54 occurrence records combined with bioclimatic, elevation and forest-type data using ensemble species distribution modeling. The models indicate that approximately 12% of Slovenia’s territory is potentially suitable for the species, primarily in mountainous regions, particularly in northern Slovenia. The highest probability of B. viridis occurrence was associated with very low minimum temperatures in the coldest month. Future projections predict a strong reduction in potentially suitable areas, ranging from 67.7 to 100%—depending on the reference period and emission scenario—indicating severe range contraction and a potential loss of suitable habitats and underscoring the urgent need for targeted conservation, monitoring and forest management strategies that preserve deadwood-rich forest stands with spruces and firs, to ensure long-term survival of B. viridis in Slovenia.

Practice and legislation of felling residue management to prevent forest pests in European forests
Maarten De Groot, Tine Hauptman, Kristjan Ait, Flavius Balacenoiu, Eckehard Brockerhoff, Luka Capuder, György Csóka, Mirza Dautbašić, Massimo Faccoli, Juraj Galko, Marija Kolšek, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In the last few decades, bark beetle outbreaks have increased in European forests, triggered by extreme weather events, such as drought and windstorms. A core element of integrated pest management to control outbreaks are salvage logging and sanitation felling, i.e., the timely removal or treatment of potential brood material and already infested trees after disturbance events. Associated with these management operations as well as with regular, planned thinning and cutting, felling residues, such as treetops, branches and stumps that remain in the forest provide potentially suitable breeding material for bark beetles and may trigger further outbreak events. Although felling residue management is part of regular forest management in most of Europe, no overview exists on its use throughout the continent. To fill this gap, we gathered forest health experts from 20 European countries and used a questionnaire to provide information on felling residue management in the context of forest protection in managed forests. Relevant legislation in these countries was reviewed for regulations concerning this topic. We found that most countries have felling residue management in their legislation and/or perform it in practice. In 12 of the 20 countries, felling residue management is being applied to manage bark beetles, particularly in areas that have experienced large-scale outbreaks in the last few decades. Felling residues are mainly managed in forests dominated by Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) and pines (Pinus spp.) (in 19 and 17 of the countries, respectively). The most frequently used management methods on a European level were piling or mulching of felling residues. These methods were used in 14 and 16 of the countries, respectively. Besides bark beetle management, use of residues for bioenergy (4 countries) and biodiversity conservation (6 countries) was reported. The diversity of felling residue management practices across Europe may reflect differences in forest policies and climatic gradients that are affecting bark beetle outbreak risks. This overview presents the variety of felling residue management applied across 20 European countries, highlighting the reasons for and implications of its use, as well as further research needs.

First record of the invasive bark beetle Polygraphus proximus Blandford (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) in the Republic of Kazakhstan
Natalia I. Kirichenko, Valentin V. Rudoi, Anton A. Efremenko, Alexander V. Petrov, Yuri N. Baranchikov, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The four-eyed fir bark beetle, Polygraphus proximus Blandford, 1894 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), is an aggressive invasive species originating from Far East. Over the past two decades, it distributed across Siberia, traversed the Urals and invaded some regions of the European part of Russia. In the secondary range, the pest kills heathy tree stands of Siberian fir, Abies sibirica Ledeb. (Pinaceae), both in native forests and man-made plantings, resulting in profound ecological and economic consequences. Here we report the first documented occurrence of this invasive pest in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Infested Siberian fir trees were discovered in the forest nearby Karaguzhikha village (East Kazakhstan Region), approximately 43 km away from Novoaleiskoye village (Altai Territory, Russia), where the pest was detected in 2016. The presence of trees colonized by the invasive pest and dead trees with specific symptoms in the examined forest stand suggest that P. proximus has likely been present in northeastern Kazakhstan for around a decade. The illustrations of affected habitat, male and female beetles and their morphological features are provided, and the early data on the damage caused by P. proximus and the potential for range expansions are discussed. The monitoring would be required to define the actual frontier of the pest distribution in Kazakhstan. Furthermore, it is imperative to alert the relevant authorities in Kazakhstan about the potential threat posed by this invasive tree-killer to native fir stands in the country.

Evaluation of deep learning models for image-based classification of timber logs by market value
Matevž Triplat, Žiga Lukančič, Vasja Kavčič, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The identification of standing tree species, timber logs, and on-site assessment of their quality and value using images holds significant potential for forestry applications, including inventory management, traceability under EU regulations like the Deforestation Regulation, and market valuation amid growing demands for sustainable practices. This study addresses this by classifying images of timber logs by tree species and market value using the Orange data mining software, which leverages pre-trained convolutional neural networks (Inception v3 and SqueezeNet) to generate embeddings from a dataset of 5549 images collected at a real timber auction in Slovenia, followed by logistic regression image classification. Results show high accuracy for tree species classification (up to 92.6%), but substantially lower accuracy for market value classification (40%–55%), reflecting the greater complexity of value determination from visual features. These findings underscore the promise of deep learning for species identification while indicating the need for further methodological advancements to enhance value classification reliability, which offers the practical impact for operational forestry and bioeconomy value chains.
