The reflect array unit comprises two center-notched spiral structures aligned orthogonally and is separated by an independent notchperfect rectangle element. Based on the reflect array unit design, a single layer 7 x 7 array, totally 49 elements for Horizontally Linearly Polarized (HLP) Ku-band transmission (12.4 – 14.8 GHz) and 49 elements for Vertically Linearly Polarized (VLP) X-band reception (10.7 – 12 GHz is designed with the phase changes of over 75o . This phase changes is obtained by adjusting the length of the notched spiral patch within the unit cell. Two distinct horn sources has been implemented to energize the orthogonal ports, supplying separate linear polarization for each frequency band. The efficiency is about 18.2 to 22% across different frequency bands, underscoring the array’s suitability for Drone Tracking applications. From the performance measures, it is found that the proposed dual-band reflect array is more suitable for drone ground station tracking applications. Additionally, this proposed structure minimizes design complexity and meets specifications of a low profile antenna with a simple structure and reduced weight. 2. Prehydrated collagenated cortico-cancellous heterologous bone gel and papillae tunneling for isolated intrabony defects : 12-month noninferiority trialTom Kobe, Katja Povšič, Rok Gašperšič, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Objectives: This study assessed the effectiveness of prehydrated collagenated xenogenic bone gel and a collagenated cortico-cancellous heterologous bone mixture in conjunction with papillae tunneling techniques (PTT) for treating isolated periodontal intraosseous defects. Materials and methods: Twenty patients with periodontitis stage III/IV and at least one deep isolated interdental 2/3-wall intraosseous defect were included in the study. Surgical incisions were made vertically at the adjacent tooth or horizontally at the mucogingival junction. A full-thickness flap was then carefully lifted under the papillae using special tunneling instruments. The root surfaces were completely cleaned, and the defects were randomly filled with either prehydrated collagenated bone gel (test group; n = 10) or collagenated cortico-cancellous heterologous bone mixture (control group; n = 10). Wounds were closed with microsurgical sutures. We predicted that the lower 95% confidence interval for the difference between the two procedures would exceed a prespecified noninferiority threshold. Results: All wounds closed sufficiently to prevent biomaterial exposure. The test and control groups showed similar mean pocket depth reduction (3.5 ± 1.0 vs. 3.9 ± 1.7 mm; p = 0.52), similar gingival recession (-0.10 ± 0.99 vs. 0.2 ± 0.8 mm; p = 0.46), and similar clinical attachment gain (3.6 ± 1.51 vs. 3.7 ± 1.8 mm; p = 0.89) at the 12-month follow-up. All results were below the noninferiority margin of the sample. Conclusions: At 12 months, prehydrated collagenous bone gel performed similarly to collagenous heterologous bone granules in the treatment of intraosseous lesions with PTT. In addition, both biomaterials preserved soft tissue with minimal further recession at 1 year. Clinical relevance: When combined with PTT, collagenous xenogeneic bone granules and prehydrated collagenous bone gel achieve comparable clinical outcomes in intrabony defects. 4. Computed tomography differentiation of compact and cancellous bone tissue in short and sesamoid bonesŽiva Miriam Geršak, Irena Zupanič-Pajnič, Eva Podovšovnik, Vladka Salapura, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Background: Selecting the most suitable skeletal remains for genetic analysis is challenging due to the variable DNA yield across different bone types and within individual bones. Compact bone typically preserves DNA longer, whereas cancellous bones, such as those in the hands and feet, often contain higher DNA quantities. This study aimed to incorporate dual-source computed tomography (DSCT), a technique frequently utilized for assessing bone density in living subjects, into targeted DNA sampling for dry, skeletonized remains by mapping compact and cancellous regions within six small skeletal elements. Materials and methods: A total of 137 bones were analysed using an imaging protocol specifically adapted to highlight the skeletal structure of small bones. This tailored protocol involved meticulous calibration of imaging parameters. Anatomical landmarks for six distinct elements were identified, and regions of interest were selected for bone density measurement in Hounsfield units (HU). Results: Among 461 assessed regions, 312 (68%) were classified as compact bone, and 149 (32%) as cancellous bone. Given the abnormal distribution of data, statistical differences were evaluated using 95% confidence intervals, with significance indicated by non-overlapping intervals. The analysis revealed statistically significant differences between compact and cancellous bone, as well as within each type across different bones. Conclusions: DSCT proved effective in mapping the internal structure of six small skeletal elements in dry, skeletonized remains, underscoring significant intra-bone variability in density. The findings illustrate DSCT's substantial potential for enhancing DNA sampling in forensic and paleogenetic studies, setting the stage for future research advancements. 6. Clarithromycin-loaded submicron-sized carriers : pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic evaluationReetika Rawat, Raghuraj S. Chouhan, Veera Sadhu, Manu Sharma, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The current study aims to improve clarithromycin bioavailability and effectiveness in complicated intra-abdominal infection management. Therefore, clarithromycin-loaded submicron dual lipid carriers (CLA-DLCs) were developed via hot high shear homogenization technique and evaluated for colloidal parameters, release behavior, stability study, and in-vitro antibiofilm activity. Bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of optimized formulation on hampering cytokines storm induction was determined in E. coli-induced peritonitis. The developed CLA-DLCs (particle size 326.19 ± 24.14 nm, zeta potential −31.34 ± 2.81 mV, and entrapment efficiency 85.78 ± 4.01%) exhibited smooth spherical shapes and sustained in vitro release profiles. Long-term stability study of optimized CLA-DLCs ensured maintenance of colloidal parameters for 1 year at room temperature. In vitro antimicrobial studies revealed 3.43-fold higher anti-biofilm activity of CLA-DLCs compared with clarithromycin. In addition, the relative bioavailability of CLA-DLCs was enhanced 5.89-fold compared to pure drug in rats. The remarkable decrease in microbial burden in blood as well as tissues, along with oxidative stress markers (lipid peroxidation, myeloperoxidase activity, and carbonylated protein level) and immunological markers (total leukocyte count, neutrophil migration, NO, TNF-, and IL-6) on treatment with CLA-DLCs enhanced the survival in a rat model of peritonitis compared with the pure drug and untreated groups. In conclusion, CLA-DLCs hold promising potential in management of intra-abdominal infections and prevention of associated complications. 7. An international consensus on the design of clinical trials for advanced combination treatment (ACT) in inflammatory bowel diseaseVirginia Solitano, Jurij Hanžel, Christopher Ma, Robert Battat, Tim Raine, Britta Siegmund, Laurent Peyrin-Biroulet, Bram Verstockt, Joana Torres, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Background: Advanced Combination Treatment (ACT) refers to the dual use of two advanced therapies—either two biologics, two small molecules, or one biologic and one small molecule. There is a lack of guidance regarding clinical trial design for ACT in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Key uncertainties remain regarding aspects such as eligibility criteria, pharmacotherapy regimens, safety considerations, and standardised trial design configurations for both induction and maintenance phases. We aimed to formulate expert recommendations regarding the design of ACT clinical trials in IBD. Methods: A systematic search was performed in June 2023. Modified RAND/University of California, Los Angeles Appropriateness Methodology (RAM) was employed to evaluate 287 statements related to the design of ACT clinical trials in patients with IBD. A multidisciplinary panel of gastroenterologists and precision medicine scientists rated statement appropriateness on a 9-point Likert scale. Statements were subsequently categorised as appropriate, uncertain, or inappropriate based on the median panel rating and the presence of disagreement. The consensus meetings were held on February 6, 2024 and June 4, 2024. Findings: ACT should consist of drugs with distinct mechanisms of action, avoiding combinations targeting the same biological pathway. Appropriate eligibility criteria included prior treatment failure and high risk for disease complications. Safety considerations were prioritised, with short-term use of high-risk regimens acceptable for induction therapy. Trial designs should compare ACT to monotherapy and allow for longitudinal evaluation. Co-primary endpoints of clinical remission and endoscopic response were endorsed, with safety outcomes including adverse events and infections. Precision medicine approaches, guided by biomarker analysis, were considered essential for further defining mechanistic pathways and monitoring treatment response. Interpretation: Implementing standardised design elements for eligibility criteria, pharmacotherapy regimens, safety considerations, and trial design configurations will facilitate the conduct of efficient clinical trials of ACT. 10. Neurophysiological underpinnings of balance control and cognitive-motor interaction in early Parkinson’s diseaseManca Peskar, Paolo Manganotti, Uroš Marušič, Klaus Gramann, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: People with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) often compensate for impaired automatic balance control by engaging additional attentional resources for motor tasks. With disease progression, their cognitive system too becomes increasingly affected, further impairing postural stability. The interaction between cognitive and motor systems in the early disease stages, however, remains poorly investigated. The present study aimed to elucidate behavioral and neurophysiological changes in early-stage PD to identify with greater accuracy the specific disease-related discrepancies from healthy functioning on both cognitive and motor systems. Eighteen participants with PD (aged 62.9±6.6 years) and 18 healthy matched controls (aged 62.9±6.4 years) performed (i) a balancing single task in a semi-tandem stance (ST-sts), (ii) a single visual oddball task with conflicting Stroop color-word stimuli (ST-Stroop), and (iii) a dual-task (DT) combining the two single tasks. Centre of pressure displacement using a force plate and 128-channel electroencephalography (EEG) were recorded. Participants with PD exhibited reduced postural sway compared to controls, and postural sway was lower in DT as opposed to ST. Reduced sway in PD might be attributed to postural rigidity and tonic muscle activation, while in the DT, it might reflect resource conflicts. EEG analyses indicated distinct spectral activity patterns: the central midline low-frequency (δ, θ) power increased with cognitive load, centroparietal β desynchronization intensified with motor load, and parietal α desynchronization heightened during DT in both PD and control groups, underscoring specific frequency bands’ governing roles in cognitivemotor processing. Furthermore, PD participants exhibited heightened or prolonged responses in ERP components related to working memory (frontocentral P2) and conflict resolution (P300), possibly reflecting compensatory neural strategies. Overall, these findings suggest that cognitive capacities, particularly selective attention, might be more affected than sensory acuity in early PD, highlighting areas for targeted interventions.
