Psychological distress in young adults with well-controlled psoriasis
Eva Klara Merzel Šabović, Tadeja Kraner Šumenjak, Miodrag Janić, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Introduction: Psychological distress is common in psoriasis, but its prevalence and possible biological correlates in young adults with well-controlled disease remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to assess the presence of anxiety and depressive symptoms in young, well-treated psoriasis patients, who were primarily expected to have no or minimal psychological distress, and to explore potential associations with inflammatory and metabolic markers. Methods: In a cross-sectional cohort of 80 psoriasis patients (women/male: 45/35; mean age 38.7 ± 4.2 years) psychological symptoms were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), with HADS-A and HADS-D subscales evaluating anxiety and depression symptoms. Exploratory associations with inflammatory cytokines and metabolic indices were examined using regression analyses and random forest machine-learning models. Results: Anxiety symptoms were identified only in 5 patients (women/male: 4/1; 6%), and depressive symptoms in 10 patients (women/male: 6/4; 12%). Affected individuals had clinically significant anxiety (HADS-A: 12/21) and borderline depressive symptoms (HADS-D: 10/21). No significant associations between HADS scores and inflammatory or metabolic markers were found. Exploratory random forest models tentatively identified IL-6, IL-23, FIB-4, HOMA-IR, and waist circumference as the strongest contributors to variance in depressive symptoms, while no clear contributors emerged for anxiety. Discussion: Anxiety and depressive symptoms can occur in well-treated young psoriasis patients. Although prevalence is low, their impact may be substantial. These findings indicate the potential importance of targeted psychological screening in this population. Associations with inflammatory and metabolic markers should be considered hypothesis-generating and warrant validation in larger, independent cohorts.

The effect of serotonin reuptake and serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors on motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease : a PPMI-based matched-subject study
Teodora Matić, Martijn Hendriks, Ruben Saman Vinke, Aleksander Sadikov, Dejan Georgiev, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Background: Depression often co-occurs with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and is effectively treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRI), but their effect on motor symptoms has not yet been conclusively demonstrated. Objective: To assess the impact of the SSRI/SNRI on the motor symptoms of PD. Methods: We used data from the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative database, in a matched subject design with a target group (N =47) which had been taking SSRI/SNRI medication and a control group (N =90) which had not. Matching criteria included Movement Disorders Society Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale part III (MDS-UPDRS-III) total score and its subscales’ scores, and levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD) at the time of the first examination (initial LEDD). For the target group, we compared the MDS-UPDRS-III score before and after taking the SSRI/SNRI medication, while for the control group we compared two equally spaced examinations. Results: In the target group, we found a greater worsening of motor scores, which was associated with lower values of initial LEDD. In addition, apathy was an independent predictor of motor worsening. Conclusions: SSRI/SNRI-use seems to be characterized by a steeper worsening of motor symptoms, which can be predicted by a lower initial LEDD. Further research should continue to investigate the effect of SSRI/SNRI-use on motor symptoms in PD.

Interplay of anxiety, depression, vascular function, and biomarkers in post-myocardial infarction patients
Jan Kafol, Borut Jug, Mojca Božič Mijovski, Jure Tršan, Daniel Košuta, Marko Novaković, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Background and aims: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of mortality. Depression and anxiety are common in CAD patients and negatively affect quality of life, physical functioning, and adherence to cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs. This study aimed to identify possible associations with clinically relevant parameters, vascular function and blood biomarkers. Methods: Participants were consecutively recruited during cardiac rehabilitation intake visits at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana within 4 months of myocardial infarction (MI). Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores were analyzed in relation to endothelial function (assessed with flow-mediated dilation), arterial stiffness, and blood biomarkers (fibrinogen, endocan, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor [BDNF]) in post-MI patients. All vascular and biomarker assessments were performed within 5 days of questionnaire completion and prior to the start of rehabilitation. Results: There were 105 patients included in the study. The median age was 56 years (49–62), and 80.0% of participants were male. Clinically relevant anxiety and depression were present in 29.5% and 21.9% of participants, respectively. Anxiety was significantly associated with younger age, higher body mass index, and increased arterial stiffness, with total HADS scores negatively correlated with age. Endothelial function showed no significant associations with HADS scores. Vital signs showed no significant differences, except for slightly higher systolic blood pressure in those with clinically relevant depression. Fibrinogen levels were significantly higher in participants with anxiety and depression, while endocan and BDNF levels were lower in those with anxiety. Conclusion: Depression and especially anxiety are significantly associated with endothelial function and relevant biomarkers in post-MI patients. However, as HADS is a screening tool and not a diagnostic instrument, and given the study’s observational design, findings reflect associations rather than causality. Routine screening and targeted mental health support within CR programs might improve participation, enhance cardiovascular recovery, and optimize long-term outcomes. These findings underscore the clinical importance of psychological assessment in the early post-MI period and support the integration of mental health evaluation into cardiovascular care.

William James’s Assessment of Nihilism as a Psychological Phenomenon
Jon Stewart, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The present article examines the contribution to the problem of nihilism found in the American philosopher and psychologist William James, specifically in his essay “Is Life Worth Living?” from 1896 and the chapter “The Sick Soul” from his The Varieties of Religious Experience from 1902. At the age of 27, James suffered a period of intense depression that lasted from the fall of 1869 until the spring of 1870. This experience shaped his views on nihilism. The present article argues that James’s proposed solution to the problem of nihilism, although formulated rather differently, is in essence the same as that of Jean Paul and the Danish thinker Poul Martin Møller. James’s originality can be found in his treatment of the issue as a psychological problem.

Comparison of mapping efficiency for small datasets using inverse distance weighting vs. moving average, Northern Croatia Miocene hydrocarbon reservoir
Josip Ivšinović, Tomislav Malvić, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Mapping of geological variables in the Croatian part of the Pannonian Basin System (CPBS) is mostly based on small input datasets. In the case of the analyzed hydrocarbon field "B", reservoir "K", due to the complex geological structure and pronounced tectonics, the interpretations are restricted on several blocks, where each has very limited dataset. The porosity (19 data) and permeability (18 data) variables were analyzed. The applied interpolation methods are the Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) and the Moving Average (MA). They were compared and analyzed by visual inspection of the obtained maps, comparison of mathematical background and by calculation of cross-validation (CV). The cross-validation value for the porosity of the "K" reservoir in the case of IDW application is 0.0011, and in the case of MA 0.0010; while in the case of permeability the IDW is 480.84, and in the case of MA 1346.41. According to the visual review of maps, the values of descriptive statistics of estimated values and the results of cross-validation, the IDW method is recommended for mapping the porosity and permeability of reservoirs blocks in the Sava Depression.

Effects of home confinement on mental health and lifestyle behaviours during the COVID-19 outbreak : insights from the ECLB-COVID19 multicentre study
Achraf Ammar, Khaled Trabelsi, Michael Brach, Hamdi Chtourou, Omar Boukhris, Liwa Masmoudi, Bassem Bouaziz, Boštjan Šimunič, Rado Pišot, Saša Pišot, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Although recognised as effective measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak, social distancing and self-isolation have been suggested to generate a burden throughout the population. To provide scientific data to help identify risk factors for the psychosocial strain during the COVID-19 outbreak, an international cross-disciplinary online survey was circulated in April 2020. This report outlines the mental, emotional and behavioural consequences of COVID-19 home confinement. The ECLB-COVID19 electronic survey was designed by a steering group of multidisciplinary scientists, following a structured review of the literature. The survey was uploaded and shared on the Google online survey platform and was promoted by thirty-five research organizations from Europe, North Africa, Western Asia and the Americas. Questions were presented in a differential format with questions related to responses %before% and %during% the confinement period. 1047 replies (54% women) from Western Asia (36%), North Africa (40%), Europe (21%) and other continents (3%) were analysed. The COVID-19 home confinement evoked a negative effect on mental wellbeing and emotional status (P < 0.001; 0.43 % d % 0.65) with a greater proportion of individuals experiencing psychosocial and emotional disorders (+10% to +16.5%). These psychosocial tolls were associated with unhealthy lifestyle behaviours with a greater proportion of individuals experiencing (i) physical (+15.2%) and social (+71.2%) inactivity, (ii) poor sleep quality (+12.8%), (iii) unhealthy diet behaviours (+10%), and (iv) unemployment (6%). Conversely, participants demonstrated a greater use (+15%) of technology during the confinement period. These findings elucidate the risk of psychosocial strain during the COVID-19 home confinement period and provide a clear remit for the urgent implementation of technology-based intervention to foster an Active and Healthy Confinement Lifestyle AHCL).
