Seismic protection technologies
Luka Naumovski, Onur Kaplan, Vojko Kilar, Erkan Çelebi, Giuseppe D’Arenzo, Beatrice Faggiano, Giacomo Iovane, Saeid Javidi, Daniele Casagrande, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Povzetek: Taller timber buildings (TTBs) offer sustainability benefits but pose unique seismic challenges. The following chapter reviews state-of-the-art seismic protection technologies (SPTs) for TTBs, including low-damage self-centering systems, post-tensioned systems, supplemental damping systems, passive and active control systems and base isolation. It discusses the principles, applications, and future challenges of each technology. While significant progress and innovative solutions have been achieved, outstanding challenges include scaling the technology, optimizing cost-effectiveness, and managing interactions between structural and non-structural elements to enhance functional recovery, damage limitation, and acceleration reduction. By examining current practices and future directions, this review facilitates a broader understanding and implementation of SPTs, promoting the sustainable growth of TTBs in seismic-prone regions.

Dynamic properties of lightweight foamed glass and their effect on railway vibration
Stanislav Lenart, Amir M. Kaynia, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Deformation properties of lightweight coarse grained material from recycled foamed glass have been determined from large-scale triaxial tests on prismatic specimens with dimensions 40 cm x 40 cm x 80 cm. Deformations were measured locally using vertical and horizontal local deformation transducers. Monotonic and cyclic loading at small to medium strain range were conducted. Three load sequences representing the expected conditions of use of lightweight material as vibration-reducing material in railway geotechnics have been used. Results indicate strong effect of brittle cellular structure of tested material as well as confining pressure dependency of elastic threshold shear strain and damping ratio. The results were used to assess the applicability of empirical formulas for shear modulus of granular materials to lightweight foamed glass. The parameters determined from the laboratory tests were further used in numerical analysis of railway dynamic response. The results of the numerical simulations show that replacement of fill in track embankment by lightweight material could improve the dynamic response of the track in reducing the vibration.

Cyclic response of insulated steel angle brackets used for cross-laminated timber connections
Meta Kržan, Boris Azinović, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In cross-laminated timber (CLT) buildings, in order to reduce the disturbing transmission of sound over the flanking parts, special insulation layers are used between the CLT walls and slabs, together with insulated angle-bracket connections. How-ever, the influence of such CLT connections and insulation layers on the seismic resistance of CLT structures has not yet been studied. In this paper, experimental investigation on CLT panels installed on insulation bedding and fastened to the CLT floor using an innovative, insulated, steel angle bracket, are presented. The novelty of the investigated angle-bracket connection is, in addition to the sound insulation, its resistance to both shear as well as uplift forces as it is intended to be used instead of traditional angle brackets and hold-down connections to simplify the construction. Therefore, monotonic and cyclic tests on the CLT wall-to-floor connections were performed in shear and tensile/compressive load direction. Specimens with and without insulation under the angle bracket and between the CLT panels were studied and compared. Tests of insulated specimens have proved that the insulation has a marginal influence on the load-bearing capacity; however, it significantly influences the stiffness characteristics. In general, the experiments have shown that the connection could also be used for seismic resistant CLT structures, although some minor improvements should be made.
