2. A Preliminary Social Media Survey of Sharks and Batoids Captured in North Aegean Sea Commercial FisheriesHakan Kabasakal, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: In recent years, the use of social media films has been increasingly considered a promising method in elasmobranch research. The present study provides a regional example of good practice in using social media films for gathering additional and complementary information on the sharks and batoids in the northern Aegean Sea. A total of 67 shark and batoid individuals representing 8 orders, 15 families, and 21 species appeared in the examined video footages. The majority of the identified elasmobranchs consisted of sharks. Incidental captures of identified elasmobranchs mostly occurred in association with demersal fishing gears, frequently in demersal long-line fishery. The incidental captures of newborn specimens of blue shark and common angel shark support the suggestion that the northern Aegean Sea may serve as a parturition and/or nursery ground for both species. 6. Demersal Elasmobranchs of the Sea of Marmara : Updated Inventory, Taxonomic Issues and Environmental ImplicationHakan Kabasakal, F. Saadet Karakulak, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: A total of 16 elasmobranch species (nine shark and seven batoid species) were sampled in the Sea of Marmara (SoM) between 2014 and 2024 for this study. During the same period, an additional nine species (six shark and three batoid species) were recorded from the same area by other researchers. Over the past 100 years, 32 species of demersal elasmobranchs (16 shark and 16 batoid species) have been reported from the SoM, but applying “evidence-based confirmed or unconfirmed presence” criteria reduces the current number to 25 (15 shark species, 10 batoid species). Principal Component Analysis indicates that adaptability to shallower waters is now critical to the spatial distribution of demersal elasmobranchs in the SoM. This shift clearly shows how dramatically the environmental degradation, marine pollution, and deoxygenation have reduced the region’s elasmobranch fauna primarily to demersal species over the last 40 years, underscoring the potentially devastating impact of such degradation on biodiversity. 7. Recent Records of Critically Endangered Common Guitarfish Rhinobatos rhinobatos (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Northern MediterraneanAlen Soldo, Eleonora De Sabata, Simona Clo, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The Common Guitarfish, Rhinobatos rhinobatos, a demersal elasmobranch listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, has experienced severe population declines across its range, particularly in the northern Mediterranean, where it is widely considered locally extinct. This study reports two new records of R. rhinobatos from the Gulf of Taranto, on the Italian side of the Ionian Sea, representing the first confirmed sightings in this region in several decades. Given the species’ vulnerability to unselective coastal fishing practices and the ongoing pressure in shallow marine habitats, these records are of considerable conservation significance. They highlight the urgent need to map critical habitats, refine bycatch mitigation measures, and reevaluate the species’ regional conservation status. The detection of this species in areas previously thought to be devoid of it offers a rare opportunity to develop targeted management actions for its recovery. 8. Analysis of Confirmed Shark Attacks in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and the Sea of Marmara (1827–2025)Hakan Kabasakal, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This paper analyses data from 46 confirmed shark attacks recorded in the geographical subareas of the eastern Mediterranean Sea (GSAs 22–27) and the Sea of Marmara (GSA 28) from 1827 to 2025. The recent distribution of attacks shows the highest concentration in Turkish waters, followed by the Mediterranean waters of Egypt and Greece. Subarea-specific data reveal that the Aegean Sea (GSA 22) and the southern Levant (GSA 26) had the highest number of incidents. Temporal analysis shows an overall increasing trend in annual shark attacks throughout the study period. Since the large pelagic predatory sharks of the Mediterranean Sea are highly migratory, they can be encountered off any Mediterranean coast at any time. Considering the critical role of predatory sharks in marine ecosystems, a shark-safe eastern Mediterranean means creating safe environmental conditions for both humans and sharks. 9. Bite Marks Observed on a Large Female White Shark Carcharodon carcharias Off Camargue, France Provide Potential Insights into the Reproduction of the Mediterranean PopulationNicolas Ziani, Florane Tondu, Rémi Bru, Chloé Mosnier, Sarah Foxonet, Ruben Bao Gallien, Mathias Pouly, Modan Lou Tonietto, Lucille Verdon, Eloïse Deysson, Alessandro De Maddalena, Hakan Kabasakal, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The ecology of the great white shark Carcharodon carcharias in the Mediterranean remains largely unknown due to its rarity and population decline, despite its role as the region’s apex predator. In September 2022, we documented a rare adult female displaying distinct bite marks, swimming off the coast of the Camargue. From spring to autumn, the Gulf of Lion, particularly in the adjacent waters of the protected area of the Parc Naturel Régional de Camargue, experiences a significant increase in biodiversity. Our observations suggest that this region may serve as a key late-summer feeding area for female great white sharks following copulation. 10. Mountain environment protection and protected mountain areas in SloveniaAleš Smrekar, Katarina Polajnar Horvat, Matija Zorn, 2026, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Povzetek: The conservation of the natural environment in Slovenia goes back to the late nineteenth century. The first nature protection program in Slovenia was drawn up in 1920. The current Nature Conservation Act was adopted in 1999. Today there are one national park, three regional parks, and twenty-three landscape parks in the Slovenian mountains; this chapter presents one example of each. The beginnings of Slovenia’s only national park (i.e., Triglav National Park) hark back to 1924. It is rich in typical alpine features and full of alpine flora and fauna. Its cultural landscape reflects the connection between people and nature. It covers 840 km2 and contains thirty-three settlements with over 2,300 residents. Logar Valley Landscape Park was established in 1987. It covers 24 km2 and has only around forty residents. The beauty of this glacial valley is reflected in numerous natural features. Farms, which have shaped the cultural landscape over the centuries, have also left their mark. Efforts to preserve the predominantly forested Pohorje Hills region date back to the 1920s. Pohorje Regional Park was established in 2024. It covers 59 km2 and has no residents.
