Avoiding the elephant in the room : echo chambers and the (de-)politicization of COVID-19 during the 2021 German federal election on Twitter
Jasmin Riedl, Wiebke Drews, Friederike Richter, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: During the 2021 German federal election campaign, COVID-19 emerged as a highly salient issue in public discourse. Despite its significance, most political parties adopted a strategy of depoliticization, likely as a means to mitigate potential electoral losses. Against this backdrop, our paper examines whether and to what extent COVID-19 was discussed on Twitter in the run-up to the election. Our analysis draws on two original datasets collected in the four weeks preceding the election on September 26, 2021: one comprising 7,374,166 German-language posts mentioning the federal election and another with 3,195,198 German-language posts commenting on the COVID-19 pandemic. Using these datasets, we calculated echo chamber scores (ECS) based on ideological leanings within retweet-based networks and examined the politicization of COVID-19 in the digital election campaign. Our findings reveal that the online discourse polarized into two distinct echo chambers: a “safety-first” community advocating for strict COVID-19 measures, and a “freedom-first” community opposing such measures. While most political figures sought to depoliticize the issue online, key political actors – due to their leadership roles in the upcoming election-could neither avoid addressing the pandemic nor being publicly addressed on the matter. In particular, users within the echo chambers focused attention on two key health policy leaders from opposing political camps: Jens Spahn, the then-incumbent Health Minister from the Christian Democratic Unio/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU), and Karl Lauterbach from the Social Democratic Party (SPD), who would later become health minister. Our results underscore that, despite efforts to minimize the salience of COVID-19 in the lead-up to the election, certain leaders were compelled to confront the “elephant in the room” due to the demands of their roles during the health crisis.

Intelligent recognition of ethnic costumes using YOLOv11 : a deep learning framework for cultural heritage preservation
Yunwu He, Lan Thi Nguyen, Wirapong Chansanam, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The rapid digitization of cultural heritage creates new opportunities to preserve the visual and symbolic richness of ethnic traditions. However, accurate recognition of ethnic costumes remains challenging due to complex textures, overlapping patterns, and high inter-group similarity. This study proposes an intelligent recognition framework based on the YOLOv11 architecture for the digital preservation of multi-ethnic attire in Lijiang, China. By integrating a C2PSA spatial attention mechanism with multi-scale feature fusion, the model enhances discrimination of fine- -grained textile structures under complex visual conditions. A large-scale dataset containing 4,974 images from 55 ethnic branches was constructed for evaluation. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves an mAP@0.5 of 98.416% and a recall of 95.923%, significantly outperforming YOLOv5 and YOLOv4 (p < 0.001). With only 5.8 million parameters and 16.2 GFLOPs, the model enables efficient real- -time deployment, contributing a robust AI-driven solution for cultural heritage informatics.

Attention and Hospitality : An Attempt at a Socio-Phenomenological Definition of the Relationships Between Asylum Seekers and "Helpers"
Audran Aulanier, 2025, strokovni članek

Povzetek: The essay is a philosophical reflection carried out by way of a sociological investigation. The goal is to understand what role attention plays in the everyday life of asylum seekers, from its pathological aspects that affect their identity to the attention that they give to others or that they receive from others, which revives their responsivity. Perpetually stimulated by the state accommodation centers for asylum seekers (reception systems) and their life as asylum seekers, the capacity to direct their attention becomes jeopardized. But when intersubjective relationships open up a common sphere, attention is revived and can be directed again: new responses are possible. On the basis of phenomenological descriptions coming from fieldwork, I characterize this inter-attention (between asylum seekers and “helpers”) as a particular mode of hospitality. From this, I conclude by sketching an ethics of attention.

Let's see if you can hear : the effect of stimulus type and intensity to pupil diameter response in infants and adults
Amanda Saksida, Sašo Živanović, Saba Battelino, Eva Orzan, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Objectives: Pupil dilation can serve as a measure of auditory attention. It has been proposed as an objective measure for adjusting hearing aid configurations, and as a measure of hearing threshold in the pediatric population. Here we explore (1) whether the pupillary dilation response (PDR) to audible sounds can be reliably measured in normally hearing infants within their average attention span, and in normally hearing adults, (2) how accurate within-participant models are in classifying PDR based on the stimulus type at various intensity levels, (3) whether the amount of analyzed data affects the model reliability, and (4) whether we can observe systematic differences in the PDR between speech and nonspeech sounds, and between the discrimination and detection paradigms. Design: In experiment 1, we measured the PDR to target warble tones at 500 to 4000 Hz compared with a standard tone (250 Hz) using an oddball discrimination test. A group of normally hearing infants was tested in experiment 1a (n = 36, mean [ME] = 21 months), and a group of young adults in experiment 1b (n = 12, ME = 29 years). The test was divided into five intensity blocks (30 to 70 dB SPL). In experiment 2a (n = 11, ME = 24 years), the task from experiment 1 was transformed into a detection task by removing the standard warble tone, and in experiment 2b (n = 12, ME = 29 years), participants listened to linguistic (Ling-6) sounds instead of tones. Results: In all experiments, the increased PDR was significantly associated with target sound stimuli on a group level. Although we found no overall effect of intensity on the response amplitude, the results were most clearly visible at the highest tested intensity level (70 dB SPL). The nonlinear classification models, run for each participant separately, yielded above-chance classification accuracy (sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value above 0.5) in 76% of infants and in 75% of adults. Accuracy further improved when only the first six trials at each intensity level were analyzed. However, accuracy was similar when pupil data were randomly attributed to the target or standard categories, indicating over-sensitivity of the proposed algorithms to the regularities in the PDR at the individual level. No differences in the classification accuracy were found between infants and adults at the group level, nor between the discrimination and detection paradigms (experiment 2a versus 1b), whereas the results in experiment 2b (speech stimuli) outperformed those in experiment 1b (tone stimuli). Conclusions: The study confirms that PDR is elicited in both infants and adults across different stimulus types and task paradigms and may thus serve as an indicator of auditory attention. However, for the estimation of the hearing (or comfortable listening) threshold at the individual level, the most efficient and time-effective protocol with the most appropriate type and number of stimuli and a reliable signal to noise ratio is yet to be defined. Future research should explore the application of pupillometry in diverse populations to validate its effectiveness as a supplementary or confirmatory measure within the standard audiological evaluation procedures.

Intentio Spiritus : the materialist, pneumatological origins of intention in Augustine
Alberto Parisi, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Intention is one of the catchwords of 20th-century Western philosophy. Positively or negatively, it takes a central role in numerous traditions, from phenomenology to analytic philosophy, and in none of them has it anything to do with air or breath. According to its widely accepted lineage, the concept of intention can be traced back to Medieval Scholastic philosophy, specifically to Augustine’s utilisation of this term. It is in Augustine’s intentio animi (the intention of the soul) – most critics argue – that intention first meant directing one’s attention towards something or a voluntary design or plan. In this paper, such a genealogy will not be proved wrong but rather complicated by taking seriously the (anti-)pneumatological context in which Augustine developed his concept of intention and, at the same time, those unheeded studies of his works that claim the origins of his use of intentio to lie in the Ancient Stoic concept of τόνος (tonos, tension or tone). A new study will show that intentio is what allows Augustine every time to prove the spirit to be immaterial, namely to not be a form of material air or breath. By transforming intentio into attentio (attention) first and voluntas (will) later, Augustine makes possible the realm of the immaterial spirit. Furthermore, however, this article also shows that his arguments seem to take for granted and reject an earlier, materialist pneumatological conception of intention, whose traces can be found in some of the works of the Roman Stoic Seneca, as well as in now-lost 4th century CE Christian heretical theories of the Holy Spirit.

Reliability and validity of 30-15 intermittent fitness test for cardiorespiratory fitness assessment among infantry members of Slovenian armed forces : ǂa ǂstudy protocol
Armin Paravlić, Boštjan Šimunič, Rado Pišot, Samo Rauter, Janez Vodičar, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Introduction: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) testing is routinely performed by most armed and tactical forces around the world as part of their recruitment process for new members or simply as an annual examination of their personnel. A 2-mile run (2MR) test is among the most commonly used. However, as it is performed outdoors, weather, climate, and terrain can influence the results and often limit the maximum performance. Also, this test has been shown to be difficult for individuals because the pacing strategy is self-paced. As such, it does not reflect the real situation on the battlefield, where most activities are externally driven by the environment and the enemy. Therefore, we believe that the 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test (30-15IFT) may be a suitable tool for measuring CRF and battle readiness of military personnel. Moreover, given the importance of visual attention to military personnel we aim to investigate the differences in visual attention between better and less physically prepared infantry members and its corresponding response to maximal endurance running test. Methods and analysis: This randomized cross-over study using a within-subjects test-retest design will enroll 32 infantry members of the Slovenian Armed Forces. To investigate the reliability and validity of the 30-15IFT test, an incremental treadmill test (TR), a 2MR test, and two identical 30-15IFT will be performed in randomized order. Additionally, participants will be subsequently divided into two groups based on their score on the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), whereas differences in visual attention will be assessed by using the d2 test. The primary analysis will assess differences in key physiological outcomes between the different CRF tests (TR vs. 2MR vs. 30-15IFT). In addition, the relative reliability of all dependent variables between two 30-15IFT trials will be estimated by interclass correlation coefficient (ICC), while relationship between maximal oxygen uptake, heart rate and maximal running speed of 30-15IFT, TR and 2MR will be assessed using Pearson’s correlation.
