2. Combining ToF-SIMS and multivariate analysis to resolve active sites on Ni-based HER catalystsMatjaž Finšgar, Katja Andrina Varda, Dževad Kozlica, Matej Huš, Milena Martins, Dušan Strmčnik, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Unambiguous identification of active sites in heterogeneous catalysis remains a major challenge, particularly formaterials with ultrathin, chemically mixed surface layers. Here, we demonstrate a generalizable approach that combinestime-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) with multivariate statistical analysis (principal componentanalysis [PCA] and multivariate curve resolution [MCR]) to resolve catalytically relevant motifs at the nanoscale. Using Nielectrodes as a model system, PCA distinguished hydroxide-enriched domains from oxide- and metal-rich regions, whileMCR decomposed depth profiles and 3D images into hydroxide, oxide, and metallic layers with nanometer resolution.A unique secondary-ion fragment, NiO3 H 3− (m/z 108.94), emerged as a marker of hydroxide-rich environments andcorrelated with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity across a series of Ni electrodes. Complementary densityfunctional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that Ni(OH)2 clusters adjacent to metallic Ni offer the most favorable waterdissociation energetics, establishing the structural origin of the marker. While illustrated here for Ni-based HER, thisworkflow provides a broadly applicable framework to isolate and rank near-surface patterns that govern catalytic activity,thereby extending ToF-SIMS from a qualitative probe to a predictive tool for active site identification.

3. Thematic Exploration of Slovenia’s Path to Independence in Slovenian Scopus-Indexed History Journals : A Bibliometric and Sociometric AnalysisDavid Hazemali, Mateja Matjašič Friš, Andrej Naterer, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This article explores how Slovenian history journals have portrayed Slovenia’s path to independence. The analysis of 3,759 articles and other journal contributions from 12 Scopus-indexed journals, using select digital humanities tools and methods, reveals that themes concerning Slovenia’s path to independence, though less frequent overall, exhibit a dynamic pattern of regular occurrence, influenced by commemorations and special issues of journals. This suggests growing scholarly interest over time. The analysis identified four key thematic groups: Socio-cultural, Political, Religious, and Yugoslavia themes. Furthermore, metadata analysis indicates a balanced distribution of male and female first authors and equitable thematic accessibility across publication languages. These findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of how Slovenian Scopus-indexed history journals engage with this critical topic.

4. Gender Regimes in Slovenian Academic Field : Defining Sexual Harassment and Violence in Internal RegulationsRok Smrdelj, Mojca Suhovršnik, Milica Antić Gaber, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence are widespread social phenomena, and thus also present in academic field. To examine how the gender regimes of Slovenian academic institutions are reflected in their internal regulations regarding sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence, we analyse them in this paper. We find that public higher education institutions, notably the University of Ljubljana and its Faculty of Arts, regulate this area more comprehensively than private higher education institutions and public research institutes. In general, our analysis reveals that while some Slovenian academic institutions maintain a male-dominated gender regime, others actively work to deconstruct it.

5. Why so Slow? : Analysing the Systemic Regulation of Sexual Harassment and Violence in the Slovenian Academic FieldJasna Podreka, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Research on sexual harassment and gender-based violence in academia shows that these issues are widespread and complex and that victims face significant barriers, often resulting in under-reporting and cases remaining unresolved. In Slovenia, these issues have received less attention compared to other forms of gender-based violence, resulting in a lack of research, public debate and systematic regulation. A research project funded by the Ministry of Education and the Slovenian Research Agency aimed to investigate how Slovenian academic institutions deal with sexual violence and harassment. The project found a general lack of comprehensive policies and highlighted the need for more proactive measures to effectively address these issues. The results of the project, which are presented in this article, provide insights into the prevalence, regulation and institutional responses to sexual violence and harassment in Slovenian higher education.

6. Oxidative stress-related biomarkers as promising indicators of inflammatory bowel disease activity : a systematic review and meta-analysisArmando Tratenšek, Igor Locatelli, Iztok Grabnar, David Drobne, Tomaž Vovk, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Oxidative stress is believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), specifically Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). This meta-analysis aimed to identify and quantify the oxidative stress-related biomarkers in IBD and their associations with disease activity. We systematically searched Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, and Web of Science databases, identifying 54 studies for inclusion. Comparisons included: (I) active IBD versus healthy controls; (II) inactive IBD versus healthy controls; (III) active CD versus inactive CD; and (IV) active UC versus inactive UC. Our analysis revealed a significant accumulation of biomarkers of oxidative damage to biomacromolecules, coupled with reductions in various antioxidants, in both patients with active and inactive IBD compared to healthy controls. Additionally, we identified biomarkers that differentiate between active and inactive CD, including malondialdehyde, Paraoxonase 1, catalase, albumin, transferrin, and total antioxidant capacity. Similarly, levels of Paraoxonase 1, erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase, catalase, albumin, transferrin, and free thiols differed between active and inactive UC. Vitamins and carotenoids likewise emerged as potential disease activity biomarkers for CD and UC, but their intake should be monitored to obtain meaningful results. These findings emphasize the involvement of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of IBD and highlight the potential of oxidative stress-related biomarkers as a minimally invasive and additional tool for monitoring the activity of IBD.

7. Ageism in Slovenia : Assessing Differences between 2008 and 2022Otto Gerdina, Slavko Kurdija, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Ageism is one of the most widespread forms of discrimination in Europe and one of the mechanisms for generating social inequalities, which is why it is essential to monitor its prevalence. This paper compared the prevalence of ageism in Slovenia in 2008 and in 2022 based on data from round four of the European Social Survey (ESS 2008) and the ESS web panel survey Cronos-2 (2022). The comparison showed that attitudes towards older people remained relatively positive, that there was an increase in the proportion of people who reported perceiving ageism and that there was a slight increase in awareness of the magnitude of the problem. At the three focus points we observed, gender emerged as a key demographic variable with a statistically significant impact.
