Determination of the maximum CO2 sequestration capacity of Slovenian waste ashes using thermogravimetry and calcimetry
Sara Tominc, Vilma Ducman, 2025, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Povzetek: There are several ways to utilize as-received or pre-treated waste ash, one of the most promising is by accelerated mineral carbonation. Ashes with a high content of Ca and Mg compounds, such as ashes from wood biomass, are ideal candidates for sequestration. Due to the shift toward renewable fuels, ash from biomass as a by-product of solid fuel combustion is therefore available in huge quantities. As part of the EU AshCycle project, we have analyzed ashes from different incineration and thermal power plants to determine their carbon sequestration potential. These include various waste ashes from Slovenia, which were subjected to accelerated carbonation in a closed carbonation chamber with a CO2 concentration of 4% (v/v), 80% relative humidity and a temperature of 40 °C until maximum CO2 uptake was reached. CO2 quantification was performed using calcimetry (pressure calcimeter) and thermogravimetry. We have shown that ash from wood biomass and the co-combustion of wood waste and paper sludge have a high CO2 sequestration potential in comparison to others. The direct use of wood biomass ash for CO2 sequestration in carbonated building products could significantly benefit the circular economy, especially since 70% of wood biomass ash is still landfilled.

A new perspective on the molecular dating of the brown trout complex with an extended phylogeographic information on the species in Serbia
Tijana Veličković, Aleš Snoj, Vladica Simić, Radek Šanda, Jasna Vukić, Dovilė Barcytė, David Stanković, Saša Marić, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: To elucidate the historical biogeography of a species, the patterns of population divergence must be understood, and the evolutionary history of the species must be accurately known. For brown trout (Salmo trutta complex), estimating divergence times remains a challenge due to the lack of well-defined time calibration points and insufficient phylogeographic coverage in previous studies. The present work aims to improve molecular dating of mitochondrial control region sequences by using a multicalibration framework based on the latest paleogeological evidence for dating the origin of Lake Ohrid and two available Salmo fossils, including the overlooked Salmo immigratus. Our results clearly show that, contrary to common belief, the major divisions within the brown trout occurred in the Late Pliocene, not the Pleistocene. The Pliocene origin suggests that the brown trout lineages did not form because of geo(hydro)morphological changes during glaciation cycles but may be the result of orogeny and drainage evolution. In addition, increased sampling, particularly in Serbia, led to the identification of a new haplogroup (da-int) occupying an intermediate position with respect to da-es and da-bs haplogroups. While the control region can delineate brown trout lineages, its phylogenetic resolution is limited, so even extensive sampling could not further resolve the lineage level polytomies.

Some experience in numerical modelling of unsaturated slope instabilities
Josif Josifovski, Stanislav Lenart, 2016, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Povzetek: In the past couple years, the region of South-East Europe is subjected to gust rainfall events activating many landslides which cause significant material and human losses. To revaluate the existing risk maps and set new standards some old case histories are revaluated. This paper presents two case histories of landslide instabilities subjected to excess climatic perturbations, gust rainfall, namely the «Stanjevci» cut-slope near the railway line in North-East of Slovenia; and the «Ramina» a natural landslide in urban area near the city of Veles in Central Macedonia. They are briefly described later to be analysed using coupled thermo-mechanical calculations. They are subjected to specific short and gusting rainfall considered as possible trigger. Hence, van Genuchten's hydraulic model is used in combination with elastoplastic material models. The results are summarized with critical comments regarding the mathematical formulation used to describe atmospheric-soil interaction and the influence of different aspects on the accuracy is discussed briefly.

Understanding the geochemical composition of alluvial sediments in a complex environmental system – A case study of the Mura/Mur river
Barbara Čeplak, Ulrike Moser, Johanna Irrgeher, Martin Šala, Polona Kralj, Gorazd Žibret, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The study provides a comprehensive investigation of the geochemical properties of stream and alluvial sediments in an area characterised by a complex natural (geochemical) and anthropogenic environment of the transboundary Mura River (Austria, Slovenia, EU). A total of 65 sediment samples from active river channel and tributaries, and 59 samples from 6 floodplain sediment profiles were collected and analysed. ICP–MS analysis was used to determine the levels of 59 elements in two fractions (<0.063 and 0.063–0.125 mm). Natural (geological) and anthropogenic factors influencing the elemental composition were determined. The sediments showed a low degree of weathering in the upper part of the river and a moderate degree in the middle and lower parts. They are enriched with As, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, and Sb compared to the median values for the European stream and floodplain sediments. This can be a consequence of the presence of natural ore mineralisation in Upper Styria along with related lithological features. Factor analysis revealed four natural geochemical associations (K–Ba–Rb–Ga–Li–Tl–Cs–Be–Al–Cu–V; Th–YREE–U; Zr–Hf–Nb; Na–Sr), one anthropogenic association (Cd–In–Zn–Pb) and two combined (geogenic and anthropogenic) associations (Ni–Cr–Mg–Co–V and Fe–Sc–Ti–Nb). Particle analysis by SEM/EDS was used to identify characteristic carriers of specific elements and potentially to determine their sources.

Multiplex basophil activation tests for allergy diagnosis : present and future applications
Ana Koren, Peter Korošec, 2024, pregledni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The basophil activation test (BAT) has become a major cellular in vitro test for evaluating the allergenic activity of specific IgEs. The impact of the BAT is due to the ability of blood basophil granulocytes to present IgE on the high-affinity FcεRI receptor and to mirror the mast cell response that elicits an acute allergic reaction. The BAT proved to be able to identify allergic patients at risk of reacting to a low dose of the allergen and/or developing life-threatening reactions and thus can significantly improve the current management of allergic patients. However, to improve the diagnostic utility for identifying the allergenic activity of different genuinely sensitizing allergens and lower the procedure and labour requirements, developing a multiplex BAT approach incorporating multiple allergen components would be highly anticipated. Recently, the novel multiplex BAT was described utilizing two major innovative steps. The first step was the fluorescent labeling of allergens. The second step was applying fluorescently labeled allergens in flow cytometry assessment to analyze the activation of basophil subpopulations gated according to the binding of different allergens or to evaluate the fluorescence intensity of multiple allergens on the surface of basophils. These novel cellular multiplex approaches will advance our understanding of IgE-mediated responses. Integration of multiplex BAT, in addition to multiplex IgE assays into practice, will personalize the measurement of allergenic IgE activity and can help estimate the likelihood of clinical relevance and risks for multiple allergens when testing individual allergic patients.

How Is TikTok #interreligious? : an inductive thematic analysis
Aída Velasco Morla, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: This study analyzes how TikTok allows users to make interreligious practices visible and share them, highlighting the coexistence between different religious traditions. Through the platform, creators showcase scenes of daily coexistence, interreligious events, and mixed ceremonies, while also denouncing the discrimi-nation and disapproval associated with interreligious relationships. Three main themes were developed using inductive thematic analysis: Interreligious Sentimen-tal Relationships (67.9%), Interreligious Experiences (21.8%), and Interreligious Facts and Information (10.3%). The study suggests that TikTok acts as a space for self-representation and in-terreligious connection through the hashtags #interreligious and #interfaith, over-coming echo chambers and increasing the visibility of interreligious content. The creation of religious content on TikTok materializes faith and expands the indivi-dual-group-Sacred interaction to a global environment, where religious practices are shared and reinterpreted
