Recent Record of the Atlantic Pomfret Brama brama (Bonnaterre, 1788) (Scombriformes: Bramidae) in the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea)

Povzetek: On 20 June 2023 a specimen of Atlantic pomfret Brama brama (Bonnaterre, 1788) (Bramidae) was caught by trammel net at 5 m depth in the Gulf of Trieste. B. brama is a pelagic neritic oceanodromous species distributed throughout temperate and warm-temperate oceans at depth ranging from 0 to 1,000 m and occasionally coming close to the shore. It is considered a rare species in the eastern Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea. The present record is the most recent in the Gulf of Trieste, after those historical deposited in the Natural History Museum of Trieste.

Additional Record of the Pea Crab Pinnotheres bicristatus (Brachyura: Pinnotheridae) in the Adriatic Sea

Povzetek: The pea crab Pinnotheres bicristatus lives in symbiosis with the saddle oyster Anomia ephippium. The first record in the Adriatic Sea dates to 2021, when one male specimen was observed in the Gulf of Trieste. This study reports additional findings from fouling samples collected in the port of Trieste as part of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive monitoring program. Seven specimens were identified based on morphological features, confirmed through CoxI DNA marker analysis, showing 100% similarity with GenBank reference sequences. This record represents the fourth occurrence of the species in the Mediterranean Sea and confirms its continued presence in the Adriatic. Due to the identification challenges in pinnotherids, its small sizes and the fact that its host, the saddle oyster, has no commercial value, P. bicristatus presence could have gone unnoticed in the past and its real distribution could be more widespread, resembling those of its host.

The burden of ageing : old age, poverty, and attitudes toward social issues in the 19th-century Austrian Littoral

Povzetek: The paper examines attitudes toward ageing and the elderly in Istria and Trieste in the second half of the nineteenth century. It takes as its starting point the perceptions associated with old age, which in the nineteenth century inevitably included, on the one hand, the inability to work—often leading to the economic dependence of the elderly and to their being regarded as a burden on the family or the state—and, on the other hand, their physical frailty, whether biologically or socially conditioned, which could to some extent be both a cause and a symptom of their social deprivation. Elderly people can be traced among the residents of almshouses and recipients of poor relief, among patients in hospitals for infectious diseases, and among those who died of age related wasting. Medical imperatives directed at the elderly were tailored primarily to the bourgeoisie and stood in stark contrast to the actual experience of ageing among the lower classes, which could not be associated with rest and self care but rather with prolonged physical labour, bodily pain, and economic insecurity.

Unprecedented warming and salinization observed in the deep Adriatic

Povzetek: The deep Southern Adriatic is a Mediterranean region highly sensitive to climate change, influenced by dense water cas-cading from the northern Adriatic and heat/salt transport from the Eastern Mediterranean. Historical (since 1957) andmodern (permanent and opportunistic temperature and salinity sampling, Argo floats, fixed moorings) measurementsreveal a substantial change since the mid-2000s in thermohaline properties. Historically marked by steady increases intemperature, salinity, and density, with substantial saw-tooth decadal variability, the near-bottom Southern Adriatic hasexperienced unprecedented warming (0.8C) and salinization (0.2) over the past decade, accelerating in time and revers-ing density trends. The inflow of much more saline waters reduced stratification and altered dense water properties atits source in the northern Adriatic. This at least fivefold acceleration of the high-emission regional climate projectionsmay have substantial effects on the Adriatic biogeochemistry and living organisms, changing sea level trends and more.

Differences in distribution and characteristics of microplastics in sediments of the south-eastern part of the Gulf of Trieste

Povzetek: Introduction: The Gulf of Trieste is prone to the accumulation of various pollutants and microplastics due to its geomorphological and hydrological characteristics. However, the distribution and sources of microplastics in this semi-enclosed area are poorly studied. The aim of our study was to determine the distribution and chemical composition of MP particles in the sediments of the Gulf of Trieste. Methods: In this study, we collected 24 surface sediment samples using a Van Veen grab. Microplastics were extracted by density separation using NaCl. The size, shape, and color of the extracted microplastics were determined using an optical microscope, and the composition of the polymers was determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results and discussion: The highest concentrations of up to 125 microplastic particles per 100 g dry sediment were found in coastal areas. Concentrations in the open sea were much lower, with an average of 3 particles per 100 g of sediment. Most of the microplastic was fibrous, made of polypropylene, 100–300 µm in size, and blue. This is the first study showing that microplastics are present in the sediments of the south-eastern part of the Gulf of Trieste. The findings suggest that microplastics exhibit a tendency to be retained within the sediment, leading to their accumulation primarily in a narrow coastal area rather than dispersing offshore. Our results will contribute to a better knowledge of the distribution and possible sources of plastics and microplastics in the Gulf of Trieste and even beyond in similar semi-enclosed marine areas.

Suicide in the Austrian Littoral at the turn of the 20th century

Povzetek: The paper seeks to examine the social image of suicide at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, focusing on the case of Trieste as a major Austrian urban centre, where the suicide rates were visibly increasing from at least the 1870s onwards. The perception of the growing presence of suicide in society made it possible to observe the reflec-tions on suicide from the last quarter of the 19th century, originating from different parts of Europe (Morselli, Masaryk, Durkheim), and at the same time how the discourses around suicide shed light on a somewhat broader picture of society, including its fears (of social problems and change, not least the potential threat of the imitative effect that the daily press was believed to create by reporting on suicides).The newspaper discourse usually followed the scientific publications of the time, and the contemporaneous observations on the mass of suicides were confirmed through statistical analyses and medical, sociological, philosophical, and other debates, while raising many other social issues with which suicide in urban areas could be linked (alcoholism, the growth of the proletariat, poverty, changing values, etc.). All these factors shaped the public debate on suicide as a problem of modern society, with an emphasis on (big) cities, where the prob-lem of suicide was much more pronounced than in smaller, non-industrial towns, or in the countryside of the Austrian Littoral.

Paleocoastline modelling – What a difference a few meters of sediment make?

Povzetek: Paleoreconstructions of coastal and near-coastal areas have always served as a tool towards better understanding of past, present and future geological and geomorphological processes. The reliability of paleocoastline and sealand extent modelling is controlled by input data. Here the difference between paleoreconstructions based on present-day bathymetry and a paleotopographic elevation model are examined on the example of the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic sea) - a low-gradient submerged Last Glacial Maximum alluvial plain with fairly well-resolved bathymetry and pre-transgressional paleotopography. Results presented in this study show striking differences between the spatial extent of the two modelled sets of paleocoastlines which in places exceeds tens of kilometers. These results demonstrate the importance of using an appropriate geologically-supported elevation model for paleoreconstruction as unsuitable models can result in significant errors and unreliable reconstructions. This is especially noteworthy for low-gradient settings where even a slight variation in sea level can affect vast areas. Finally, the results of this study provide insight into the Early Holocene evolution of the present-day area of the Gulf of Trieste as an abrupt and predominant northeasterly oriented transgression direction is indicated from the paleocoastline reconstructions.
