Hydrophilization of rice seeds by plasma treatments – super-hydrophilic surface finish and hydrophobic recovery

Povzetek: The hydrophobic character of rice seeds protects them from quick water adsorption and, thus, premature germination. This property is, however, a drawback in modern agriculture, where rapid and uniform germination represents a high-quality trait. A method for rapid hydrophilization of the Lomello variety of rice is presented. The rice seeds were treated with low-pressure gaseous plasma to tailor the wettability. The treatment of seeds with hulls with oxygen plasma afterglow enabled the super-hydrophilic surface finish within 10 ms. Such extremely fast hydrophilization was attributed to irreversible surface oxidation by neutral oxygen atoms whose flux onto the seeds was approximately 3 × 1023 m−2s−1. Dehulled seeds were made super-hydrophilic by subsequent treatments with hydrogen and oxygen plasma, and the required dose of O atoms was between 2 × 1023 and 6 × 1024 m−2. Larger doses caused a loss of the super-hydrophilicity. Hydrophilization kinetics is proposed and supported by measuring surface wettability, morphology, and composition using various techniques. The hydrophobic recovery of seeds with hulls is marginal within the first few days after plasma treatments, but dehulled seeds lose the super-hydrophilic surface finish within a few minutes after the plasma treatment when stored at ambient conditions.

Physical characteristics as indicators of performance in young alpine skiers in Super-G
Stojan Puhalj, Blaž Lešnik, Črtomir Matejek, Samo Fošnarič, Tjaša Kmet, Jurij Planinšec, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between physical characteristics and performance in young alpine skiers in the Super-G discipline. Methods: A sample of 42 U16 alpine skiing competitors (23 boys and 19 girls) aged 14-15 years participated in the study. The physical characteristics were measured using the Inbody 720 Body Composition Analysis and 3D Body Scan devices. Performance data was obtained from official records of the Ski Association of Slovenia for the 2018/19 U16 competitive season. Variables such as body height, body weight, thigh circumference, waist circumference, chest circumference, shoulder circumference, muscle mass percentage, fat mass percentage, body mass index, and body fat percentage were analyzed. Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis were used to assess the relationship between the physical characteristics and Super-G performance. Results: Significant correlations were found between body weight, thigh circumference, chest circumference, muscle mass percentage, and Super-G performance in boys. For girls, waist circumference, chest circumference, and body fat percentage were significantly correlated with performance. The multiple regression model explained 73% of the variance in the boys’ performance and 59% in the girls’, although the model itself was not statistically significant for predicting performance. Conclusion: Physical characteristics, especially muscle mass percentage and body circumferences, are significantly associated with Super-G performance in young alpine skiers. These findings underscore the importance of tailored training programs that consider individual physical characteristics to optimize competitive success in alpine skiing.

Computational complexity aspects of super domination
Csilla Bujtás, Nima Ghanbari, Sandi Klavžar, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Let ▫$G$▫ be a graph. A dominating set ▫$D\subseteq V(G)$▫ is a super dominating set if for every vertex ▫$x\in V(G) \setminus D$▫ there exists ▫$y\in D$▫ such that ▫$N_G(y)\cap (V(G)\setminus D)) = \{x\}$▫. The cardinality of a smallest super dominating set of ▫$G$▫ is the super domination number of ▫$G$▫. An exact formula for the super domination number of a tree ▫$T$▫ is obtained, and it is demonstrated that a smallest super dominating set of ▫$T$▫ can be computed in linear time. It is proved that it is NP-complete to decide whether the super domination number of a graph ▫$G$▫ is at most a given integer if ▫$G$▫ is a bipartite graph of girth at least ▫$8$▫. The super domination number is determined for all ▫$k$▫-subdivisions of graphs. Interestingly, in half of the cases the exact value can be efficiently computed from the obtained formulas, while in the other cases the computation is hard. While obtaining these formulas, II-matching numbers are introduced and proved that they are computationally hard to determine.
