1. Duelling in the Habsburg Hereditary Lands, 1600–1750 : Between Law and PracticeMatjaž Grahornik, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The article focuses on duelling in the Habsburg hereditary lands, with an emphasis on Styria. It presents around fifteen cases of duels that have been fought or provoked, from 1643 to 1750. In the Habsburg hereditary lands and in the Holy Roman Empire in general, duelling flourished during and after the Thirty Years’ War, and thrived between 1660 and 1730. Anti-duelling decrees prescribed fines and sometimes imprisonment, and the death penalty in homicide cases. Duels continued despite strict bans (also) because sanctions were generally not enforced, and if the ‘criminal’ was brought to court, he was almost always pardoned by the Emperor. In practice, the death penalty for duellists was an extraordinary event, since even trials were exceptional, including cases when duels resulted in deaths. 2. Enmity After the Feud : Violence and Its Control in Inner Austria, 1500–1750Žiga Oman, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Centring on non-nobles in the Duchies of Styria, Carniola and Carinthia, this paper addresses dispute settlement in Inner Austria, following the Imperial prohibition of feud in 1495 and the Habsburgs’ local consolidation of power earlier in the century. These developments are said to have brought about an end to feuding in the duchies in the 1500s, but by focusing on the concept of enmity, which articulated the same state of social relations, this article presents ample evidence that among all social classes dispute settlement retained much of the traditional practices well into the 1700s. Their survival was instrumentally underpinned by various courts of law and local authorities, regarding them as an indispensable element of keeping social cohesion and peace. 3. Curing and Building Trust : States, Doctors and Patients in Post-Habsburg Public Health Systems. A Border History of Public HealthFrancesco Toncich, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This paper transnationally examines the crucial role of public health after the collapse of the Habsburg Empire, focusing on the new borderlands around the Slovenian part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes: the “Rapallo Border” with the Italian Kingdom and the border with the Republic of German Austria, which cut through the former Duchies of Styria and Carinthia. Health and disease played central roles in redefining identities, legal affiliations, and trust-based relationships between civilians, physicians, and the new “successor states”. This text offers a broader view of public health, moving beyond state-centred perspectives to include the “patient’s viewpoint” and the intimate doctor-patient relationship. 4. Newcomers in Maribor in the First Half of the Eighteenth Century in the Marriage Records of the Parish of St John the BaptistDavid Hazemali, Aleš Maver, Mateja Matjašič Friš, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This article examines the role of newcomers in Maribor during the early eighteenth century through an analysis of 401 marriages recorded between 1700 and 1748 in the Parish of St John the Baptist. At least one spouse in each of these documented marriages originated from outside Maribor (including arrivals from German-speaking Styria, from Carinthia and Carniola, as well as nearby towns and villages). The study shows strong evidence that in-migration via marriage was vital for Maribor’s demographic and economic recovery after the late seventeenth-century plague. Newcomers often married into established local families, particularly those of guild masters and artisans, swiftly obtaining burgher status and guild membership. Marriage functioned as a key integration mechanism that transformed ‘outsiders’ into ‘insiders’ and helped replenish skilled labour in the town. The findings highlight that Maribor depended on a constant influx of migrants to sustain its population and craft industries, as was typical of many pre-industrial towns where deaths outpaced births. Through quantitative analysis of marriage registers and illustrative case studies, the article contributes new insights into early modern urban mobility, showing how socially sanctioned institutions like marriage facilitated the integration of migrants into urban society. 5. Transforming language ideologies in the Styrias and in PrekmurjeJakob Wiedner, Alja Lipavic Oštir, Chiara Wagner, Dorian Penšek-Rader, Jernej Čelofiga, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The article examines how monolingual ideologies shape language policies and identities in the Slovenian-Austrian border region through a qualitative analysis of interviews. Rooted in ethno-linguistic nationalism, these ideologies continue to influence language policies, particularly through linguistic purism and a persistent "discourse of threat". Monolingual narratives often overlook historical multilingual realities and cross-border communities. Interview data show that younger generations are shifting toward linguistic pragmatism, embracing local dialects, English, and a European identity. Overall, while nationalistic discourses still linger, generational change and EU integration foster a more inclusive understanding of languages and identities in the region. 6. The border as a space of exchange in the 18th century : commissioners’ networks and Joseph Hueber’s architectural workshop in Croatia and SloveniaDubravka Botica, 2025, pregledni znanstveni članek Povzetek: In Central Europe, borders are not solid barriers but are rather fluid. Central Europe is a deeply connected cultural space of intensive exchange (M. Csáky) in which artistic production is shaped by densely intertwined mutual contacts and influences between individual countries and regions. This is particularly visible in the activities of large architectural, painting and sculptural workshops in the 18th century, which had a wide network of collaborators throughout the area. A key role in the rapid and far-reaching transfer of artistic solutions was played by the commissioners of artworks, both ecclesiastical and secular, strongly connected by a dense network of contacts that did not stop at (today’s national) borders. This paper studies the example of the activities of the architectural workshop of Joseph Hueber from Graz (1715–1787) in historical Styria, present-day Austria, and Lower Styria (present-day Slovenia) and northwestern Croatia to explore the method and scope of the workshop’s work, as well as the reconstruction of contacts between commissioners from the ranks of the Styrian, Hungarian and Croatian nobility.
