Reformacija u Istri – 500 godina Matije Vlačića Ilirika
Nataša Urošević, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: On the occasion of the quincentenary of the birth of the Istrian reformers, the famous Protestant theologian Matthias Flacius Illyricus (1520–1575) and Stephanus Consul Pinguentinus, Histrianus (1521–1579?), first translator of the New Testament into the Croatian language, analyzing the monographs of the Istrian polymath Mijo Mirković (1898–1963) dedicated to Flacius, the author elaborates in this essay the activity of the Istrian Protestants (Croatians, Slovenians and Italians) who, thanks to the emergence of “print capitalism” and “printed” languages, have contributed significantly to the spread of literacy and culture and to the creation of modern collective identities and “imagined communities”. By presenting the multicultural and cosmopolitan character of the legacy of the Istrian reformers, the importance of international project cooperation in researching the phenomenon of reformation in Istria and in valorising the common European heritage was underlined.

Enigma M4 Cipher Machine from the Wreck of the German Minesweeper R 15 near Umag
Andrej Gaspari, Danijel Germek, Aleš Jelinčič, Miha Hren, Lidija Korat Bensa, Danijel Frka, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In 1984–1986, Zvonimir Kralj, diver and keeper of the Piran Aquarium, recovered the Enigma cipher machine with codebook and several other items from the wreck of the German minesweeper R 15 sunk off the west coast of Istria between Savudrija and Umag. The article describes and defines the device and outlines the technical characteristics of the minesweeper of the 6th Minesweeper Flotilla (6. Räumbootsflottille) of the German Kriegsmarine, which was hit by the British torpedo boat MTB 409 on the night of April 16–17 1945, and sank about 3 nautical miles northwest of Umag. An examination of the preserved parts of the cipher machine revealed that it was a naval Enigma M4 with four rotors and a reflector C. An X-ray microtomography showed the serial number of the machine M 15648 and the last configuration, left to right: C/γ (Gamma), III, VI, IV. The external position of the Gamma rotor (»P«) indicates that the Enigma was not set in a mode compatible with the M3 model, which corresponds to the cipher keys for the last two months of the war.

What does Silence Tell? : Traumas and Memorial Conflicts in the Anthropological Research of Istrian Exodus and a National “Hero”
Katja Hrobat Virloget, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The article reflects on the meanings of silence which was encountered in the ethnographic research of memories on the Istrian exodus and a WWII national “hero” in the Primorska (littoral) region of Slovenia. Different kinds of silence are discussed, from the one deriving from the conflict of memories and power relations, violence and fear, to Freudian ideas of repression and trauma, denial and others. From the methodological point of view the question is raised of how to detect silence when filled with words or embodied. A reflection is made on the impact of research on the silenced communities.

Households in the Rovinj Census of 1595/6
Marija Mogorović Crljenko, Danijela Doblanović Šuran, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: This paper continues the analysis of the first known census of Rovinj from 1595/6. It examines the size and type of households, as well as the number of children within them. Households were analyzed in terms of their composition and number. The analysis revealed that the most common households were simple ones, consisting of a married couple (or a widow/widower) and their children, while multiple households with two married couples living under the same roof were very rare. Additionally, the census included household support staff and animals. The paper explores which households had specific types of support staff, the relationship between the presence of auxiliary staff and the animals related to a household, and whether auxiliary staff were more common in council families or others.

Origin of the Population and Councillor Families in the Rovinj Census of 1595/6
Marija Mogorović Crljenko, Danijela Doblanović Šuran, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In the early modern period, Rovinj had healthier air compared to many other Istrian coastal communes, leading to a significantly higher population than places like Pula or Poreč. Its strategic location and a stable connection to Venice also attracted many settlers. This is confirmed by the first known census of Rovinj from 1595/6, which shows that a large proportion of surnames were linked to newcomers. This paper describes the census, examines the enumeration method and the time of data collection, assesses the accuracy and reliability of the data, and analyzes the population’s origins based on surnames and descriptors, the titles and names of household heads, and councilor families.

The Genesis of Koper Medieval Statutes (1238–1423)
Darko Darovec, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: This paper presents an original analysis and reinterpretation of two documents from 1238 and 1239, which are the first to mention the Koper statutes but have thus far received only sporadic mentions in historiography. The paper is further predicated on the study of archival sources of the Venetian Senate from the Senato Misti collection for the period after the Koper rebellion against Venice in 1348 up until 1394 when the Doge of Venice reconfirmed the Koper statutes. It is established that at least from 1238 the commune of Koper acted according to its already complex statutes. These were, with some further redactions, in force until 1348, when, due to the rebellion of Koper, they were disregarded by the Venetian authorities until 1358, along with the dissolution of the city’s Major Council, and all of Koper’s city offices were restructured. After 1358, the sources testify that the Venetians restored the Koper City Council and offices to their pre-rebellion state, but not the statutes, although some statutory provisions were taken into account in individual administrative or judicial cases. The Koper statutes officially came into force again in 1394, and a slightly modified redaction appeared in 1423. However, in both cases without the right to exercise criminal justice and the defence of the city, which remained in the exclusive domain of the Venetian podestà and captain until the end of the Venetian Republic in 1797.

The burden of ageing : old age, poverty, and attitudes toward social issues in the 19th-century Austrian Littoral
Urška Bratož, 2026, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Povzetek: The paper examines attitudes toward ageing and the elderly in Istria and Trieste in the second half of the nineteenth century. It takes as its starting point the perceptions associated with old age, which in the nineteenth century inevitably included, on the one hand, the inability to work—often leading to the economic dependence of the elderly and to their being regarded as a burden on the family or the state—and, on the other hand, their physical frailty, whether biologically or socially conditioned, which could to some extent be both a cause and a symptom of their social deprivation. Elderly people can be traced among the residents of almshouses and recipients of poor relief, among patients in hospitals for infectious diseases, and among those who died of age related wasting. Medical imperatives directed at the elderly were tailored primarily to the bourgeoisie and stood in stark contrast to the actual experience of ageing among the lower classes, which could not be associated with rest and self care but rather with prolonged physical labour, bodily pain, and economic insecurity.

Phytosociological analysis of Quercus cerris woods in the sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region of Slovenia
Igor Dakskobler, Zvone Sadar, Andraž Čarni, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: We conducted a phytosociological analysis of mixed deciduous forests on flysch and mixed flysch-limestone bedrock in the Central Soča Valley, the Karst, the Brkini Hills and in Slovenian Istria with dominating Quercus cerris in the upper tree layer. Based on the comparison with similar Quercus cerris communities in Slovenia, Italy, Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina we described a new association, Seslerio autumnalis-Quercetum cerridis, which we classified into the alliance Carpinion orientalis. We subdivided it into three subassociations: -asparagetosum acutifolii (Quercus cerris stands in Slovenian Istria where this tree species rejuvenates successfully and keeps through many generations), -hieracietosum sabaudi (a form on slightly acid flysch soil, also in Istria) and -campanuletosum rapunculoidis (a secondary Quercus cerris community on potential beech sites). Even though the described Quercus cerris stands are considered secondary (pioneer), they overgrow very large areas and we therefore propose they be classified as a new habitat and forest site type, littoral Quercus cerris woods on flysch.

All the colours of a historic facade: dissonant heritage narratives about the restoration of a heritage building in multicultural northern Istria
Neža Čebron Lipovec, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Heritage dissonances in contested territories are a challenge for the conservation of built heritage as they embody diverging values of the numerous communities. The restoration of the “Venetian House” in Piran (Slovenia) in 2016 provides an eloquent example through which we can observe the impact of population changes on the dynamics of (mis)recognition in heritage and highlight the potential of participatory practice in such conservation.

Localities and sites of the neglected umbellifer Physospermum verticillatum (Apiaceae) on Mt. Slavnik in southwestern Slovenia
Igor Dakskobler, Valerija Babij, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: On the shady (northern) slopes of Mt. Slavnik (Slavnik mountains, Čičarija, SW Slovenia) we identified Physospermum verticillatum (Apiaceae), a species whose northernmost known sites in its entire distribution area had until then been in the Croatian part of Čičarija near the border with Slovenia (Žbevnica near Dane). It occurs mainly in beech stands from the association Seslerio autumnalis-Fagetum, frequently in smaller gaps, on forest edges and road banks, where it occurs in fringe communities (Calamintho grandiflorae-Physospermetum verticillatinom. prov.), at elevations spanning 800 m to 1000 m. The plants are vital, most of them develop flowers and fruit. Although it is justified to assume that it may occur elsewhere in the Slovenian part of Čičarija, we propose it be classified in the Red List as rare.
