1. Technological choice & social change : a multi-analytical study of late roman and early medieval coarseware ceramics from the southeastern alpine regionSabina Dolenec, Petra Šajna, Katarina Šter, Maruša Mrak, Matej Dolenec, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This report examines ceramic technological choices during the transition from the late Roman period to the Early Middle Ages (c. 300–900 CE) in the southeastern Alps using a multi-method archaeometric approach. Fourteen samples of coarseware pottery—representing three primary fabric groups previously identified by optical microscopy—were analyzed with X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The purpose of the study was to confirm the validity of the petrographic fabric groups as well as provide further insight into steps of the chaîne op´eratoire, such as raw material acquisition, clay preparation, and firing conditions. XRD and XRF results corroborated the mineralogical profile of fabric groups identified under the microscope and provided additional quantitative data on less visible components. SEM-EDS demonstrated that potters mostly gathered locally available illite-rich clays, adopted a low intervention approach to clay preparation, and, when tempering with calcite, utilized crushed limestone. FTIR and XRD indicated that higher-fired ceramics ( > 800 ◦C) occurred predominantly at late Roman and late antique upland settlements, as well as early medieval reoccupations of those sites, while early medieval lowland sites produced lower-fired ceramics (<800 ◦C). The overall pattern during this transition was one of technological diversification: late Roman ceramic production was highly standardized, while early medieval assemblages exhibited greater diversity of technical choices. Furthermore, early medieval reoccupations of late antique settlements showed greater technological continuity with Roman traditions than newly established lowland sites, suggesting differential transmission of craft knowledge during this period. 2. Duelling in the Habsburg Hereditary Lands, 1600–1750 : Between Law and PracticeMatjaž Grahornik, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The article focuses on duelling in the Habsburg hereditary lands, with an emphasis on Styria. It presents around fifteen cases of duels that have been fought or provoked, from 1643 to 1750. In the Habsburg hereditary lands and in the Holy Roman Empire in general, duelling flourished during and after the Thirty Years’ War, and thrived between 1660 and 1730. Anti-duelling decrees prescribed fines and sometimes imprisonment, and the death penalty in homicide cases. Duels continued despite strict bans (also) because sanctions were generally not enforced, and if the ‘criminal’ was brought to court, he was almost always pardoned by the Emperor. In practice, the death penalty for duellists was an extraordinary event, since even trials were exceptional, including cases when duels resulted in deaths. 3. Enmity After the Feud : Violence and Its Control in Inner Austria, 1500–1750Žiga Oman, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Centring on non-nobles in the Duchies of Styria, Carniola and Carinthia, this paper addresses dispute settlement in Inner Austria, following the Imperial prohibition of feud in 1495 and the Habsburgs’ local consolidation of power earlier in the century. These developments are said to have brought about an end to feuding in the duchies in the 1500s, but by focusing on the concept of enmity, which articulated the same state of social relations, this article presents ample evidence that among all social classes dispute settlement retained much of the traditional practices well into the 1700s. Their survival was instrumentally underpinned by various courts of law and local authorities, regarding them as an indispensable element of keeping social cohesion and peace. 4. Implementing the Russian Initiative : Montenegrin Diplomatic Action Among Balkan Nations in 1896Darko Bakić, Ivan Radulović, Filip Vučetić, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: In response to the instability in the Ottoman Empire, which became particularly evident in the mid-1890s, Austria-Hungary adopted a plan in late January 1896 to occupy part of the territory in the Sanjak of Novi Pazar, provided it received consent from the Porte. On the other hand, Russia launched an initia-tive in February of the same year aimed at bringing the Balkan nations closer together, entrusting Montenegro with its implementation, precisely to prevent the Vienna government from exploiting the newly emerged situation in the neighboring empire to fulfill the Dual Monarchy’s territorial ambitions. To this end, Montenegrin Foreign Minister Gavro Vuković visited Belgrade, Sofia, and Constantinople, with the tangible results of his actions culminating in a secret agreement known as the Ugodba. 5. Predictors for residential mobility in later life : empirical findings for the young-oldliving in an Austrian small townTatjana Fischer, Markus Jobst, Karl Moder, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The article addresses residential mobility in later life from the perspective of the young-old, an under-explored topic in Austria. Data originating from a written survey conducted as part of a cross-sectional case study on people aged 60 to 74 years living in an Austrian small town are used to estimate prospective behaviour using logistic regression. The results show that women and people with a higher educational attainment are more likely to leave their current urban residential municipality, while men are more likely to relocate to a nursing home. Moreover, a duration of residence of 20 or more years decreases the probability of relocation. The findings confirm previous studies and highlight, that more spatially disaggregated data is needed to improve decision-making in town planning. 6. Slovenia and Austria at the crossroads of mutual relations. Slovene-Austrian relations as hostage of the troubled legacy of the 19th and 20th centuriesDanijel Grafenauer, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Austria and Slovenia are neighbours and friends, closely linked both geographically and historically. Over time, their peoples have developed various perceptions, stereotypes, and prejudices about each other. The rise of national movements and modern states has significantly shaped national historiographies, which have often drawn on past events in search of foundational ideas for the formation of their respective nationstates. This paper explores how this complex and sometimes troubled legacy has influenced cross-border relations. 7. Access to Information on Labor and Social Regulations and Compliance in the Posting of Foreign Workers in Construction in AustriaSonila Danaj, Elif Naz Kayran, Eszter Zólyomi, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: In this article, the authors examine information provision, access to rules on posting, and rule compliance by companies from the perspective of information providers and users. Using a mixed-method approach, they first study the role of access to information for rule compliance in the posting of workers in Austria and then discuss company-level factors that may mitigate this relationship. The analysis is based on an original dataset of 36 mapped information channels available in Austria, 10 interviews with information providers, and the results of a new company survey conducted in Austria with 26 respondents from individual construction companies. The assessment of the channels of information, the practices of information providers, and the companies’ experiences, challenges, and needs provides a nuanced understanding of company behavior regarding rule compliance in the posting of workers. The findings reveal a potentially important link between the access to and use of information on the rules about the posting of workers as a relevant factor in rule compliance, which is recognized by both the supply side and the demand side. 9. Suicide in the Austrian Littoral at the turn of the 20th centuryUrška Bratož, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The paper seeks to examine the social image of suicide at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, focusing on the case of Trieste as a major Austrian urban centre, where the suicide rates were visibly increasing from at least the 1870s onwards. The perception of the growing presence of suicide in society made it possible to observe the reflec-tions on suicide from the last quarter of the 19th century, originating from different parts of Europe (Morselli, Masaryk, Durkheim), and at the same time how the discourses around suicide shed light on a somewhat broader picture of society, including its fears (of social problems and change, not least the potential threat of the imitative effect that the daily press was believed to create by reporting on suicides). The newspaper discourse usually followed the scientific publications of the time, and the contemporaneous observations on the mass of suicides were confirmed through statistical analyses and medical, sociological, philosophical, and other debates, while raising many other social issues with which suicide in urban areas could be linked (alcoholism, the growth of the proletariat, poverty, changing values, etc.). All these factors shaped the public debate on suicide as a problem of modern society, with an emphasis on (big) cities, where the prob-lem of suicide was much more pronounced than in smaller, non-industrial towns, or in the countryside of the Austrian Littoral. 10. Legislative and judicial responses to the “refugee crisis” in Slovenia and Austria : a comparative perspectiveNeža Kogovšek Šalamon, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The article compares key normative and judicial responses to the 2015–2016 “refugee crisis” in Slovenia and Austria. It does so by comparing the asylum statistics, the main changes to the legislation reflecting populist reactions to the “refugee crisis,” and judicial responses to these changes and reactions. The qualitative legal analysis is based on examples of the most important changes and responses. The article considers the populistic context of these changes, as discussed by some political scientists, who demonstrate that with the crisis, a new wave of populism—“the populist Othering of migrants”—emerged.
