1. Duelling in the Habsburg Hereditary Lands, 1600–1750 : Between Law and PracticeMatjaž Grahornik, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The article focuses on duelling in the Habsburg hereditary lands, with an emphasis on Styria. It presents around fifteen cases of duels that have been fought or provoked, from 1643 to 1750. In the Habsburg hereditary lands and in the Holy Roman Empire in general, duelling flourished during and after the Thirty Years’ War, and thrived between 1660 and 1730. Anti-duelling decrees prescribed fines and sometimes imprisonment, and the death penalty in homicide cases. Duels continued despite strict bans (also) because sanctions were generally not enforced, and if the ‘criminal’ was brought to court, he was almost always pardoned by the Emperor. In practice, the death penalty for duellists was an extraordinary event, since even trials were exceptional, including cases when duels resulted in deaths.

2. The Slovenian lands in documents of the personal representative of the US president to Pope Pius XII, 1944–45Hrvoje Čapo, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The author utilizes documents from the archival fonds of the personal representative of the US president to Pope Pius XII, detailing the Holy See’s intense diplomatic activity concerning the Slovenian lands in 1944–45. The paper’s purpose is to outline how the Holy See informed the American mission about the situation in Slovenia, detail the causes of its profound concern, and reveal the motives behind the communication with the US mission in the Vatican. The Vatican’s core intention was to protect the clergy and citizenry and preserve human and religious rights amidst the complex political upheavals and the threat of communist totalitarianism. Reports forwarded to the Americans consistently described the ruthless, repressive character of the emerging Yugoslav regime, highlighting executions of priests and intellectuals, mass arrests, property confiscation, and methods used by the political police in order to seek a reaction from the Western Allies. The documents reveal the Holy See’s foresight and the limitations of its influence in altering the postwar geopolitical fate of Yugoslavia.

3. King Otto IV’s Donation of the Margraviate of Istria to the Patriarchate of Aquileia: Augsburg, 13th of January, 1209Josip Banić, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The author analyzes the donation charter issued by King Otto IV during the Diet of Augsburg to Patriarch Wolfger and the Church of Aquileia, bestowing upon the recipient the temporal jurisdiction over the Margraviate of Istria. The charter has remained unedited and unknown to historiography to this day, fostering some erroneous interpretations of the events and circumstances that led to this fateful event in January of 1209. First, the author explicates the context surrounding the issuing of this donation charter, showing that newly recognized King Otto IV had much to gain from allying with Patriarch Wolfger. Second, the charter is analyzed from a diplomatic point of view, showing that the document, preserved only as a vidimus from 1303, is indeed authentic. The author concludes by viewing the donation through analytical lenses of Marcel Mauss’s theory of the gift. The paper ends with the critical edition of the charter and its translation into contemporary English.

4. Intentio Spiritus : the materialist, pneumatological origins of intention in AugustineAlberto Parisi, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Intention is one of the catchwords of 20th-century Western philosophy. Positively or negatively, it takes a central role in numerous traditions, from phenomenology to analytic philosophy, and in none of them has it anything to do with air or breath. According to its widely accepted lineage, the concept of intention can be traced back to Medieval Scholastic philosophy, specifically to Augustine’s utilisation of this term. It is in Augustine’s intentio animi (the intention of the soul) – most critics argue – that intention first meant directing one’s attention towards something or a voluntary design or plan. In this paper, such a genealogy will not be proved wrong but rather complicated by taking seriously the (anti-)pneumatological context in which Augustine developed his concept of intention and, at the same time, those unheeded studies of his works that claim the origins of his use of intentio to lie in the Ancient Stoic concept of τόνος (tonos, tension or tone). A new study will show that intentio is what allows Augustine every time to prove the spirit to be immaterial, namely to not be a form of material air or breath. By transforming intentio into attentio (attention) first and voluntas (will) later, Augustine makes possible the realm of the immaterial spirit. Furthermore, however, this article also shows that his arguments seem to take for granted and reject an earlier, materialist pneumatological conception of intention, whose traces can be found in some of the works of the Roman Stoic Seneca, as well as in now-lost 4th century CE Christian heretical theories of the Holy Spirit.
