2. Extinction risk alert: evaluating conservation trends for the Golden-dimpled Ground Beetle (Carabus clatratus auraniensis J. Müller, 1903) in Western BalkansAndreja Brigić, Lea Ružanović, Mihaela Kristina Mlinarić, Snježana Vujčić-Karlo, Toni Koren, Al Vrezec, Andrej Kapla, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Due to extensive habitat loss and specialised ecological niche, the Golden-dimpled Ground Beetle (Carabus clatratus) became a locally extinct species with fragmented distribution throughout Europe. The subspecies C. clatratus auraniensis J. Müller, 1903 was described from the Vrana Lake in the Mediterranean biogeographical region of Croatia. This study aims to: assess conservation status of C. clatratus auraniensis in the Western Balkans through a chronogeonemy analysis; evaluate habitat suitability at the type locality by analyzing historical land use changes; and determine the effectiveness of protected area networks in ensuring the long-term survival of the species in core area of its distribution in Western Balkans. The chronogeonemy analysis reveals the extinction of C. clatratus auraniensis in the Mediterranean biogeographical region, including in its type locality. This is most likely caused by land use changes such as ongoing habitat degradation and wetland drainage, primarily driven by urbanisation and agriculture. However, the gap analysis indicated a good coverage by protected areas, contradicting previous results. The protected areas were established after the subspecies extinction and therefore have no impact on its conservation success. This indicates that gap analysis must be combined with other methods, e.g. chronogeonemy analysis, in order to detect real-time conservation trends. The conservation status of C. clatratus auraniensis in the Continental biogeographical region is stable, with continuous occurrence since the late 19th century and an increase in records in the last three decades, even with long dispersal records (e.g. Mura River in NE Slovenia). Records increase are linked to large well-preserved semi-natural wetlands along the Sava, Drava and Danube rivers, reflecting the subspecies’ good prospects. Reintroduction into protected areas in the Mediterranean region of Croatia could be a viable strategy to support the survival of this subspecies, enhancing the conservation prospects for rare C. clatratus in Europe. 3. An analysis of PIRLS 2021 mode effects : differences in reading achievement related to the assessment mode for PIRLS 2021 in Croatia and SloveniaEva Klemenčič Mirazchiyski, Plamen Mirazchiyski, Ines Perović, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Povzetek: This chapter analyzes the differences in reading achievements related to different assessment modes (digital and paper) among students in Croatia and Slovenia using IEA’s Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2021 data. It focuses on the relationship various ICT-related variables may have with the reading achievement by the mode of administration. The findings revealed no significant differences in average reading scores between the two modes, with both education systems showing similar outcomes. Although differences in achievement between the two modes could not be detected, nuances emerged regarding the association between ICT variables and reading achievement. Notably, ownership and the sharing of digital devices like smartphones indicated contrasting impacts for each country, suggesting country-specific digital divides. Additionally, while certain ICT resources seemed to marginally benefit reading scores, the general lack of significant disparities between digital and paper assessments highlights the complex interplay of factors influencing educational outcomes. Digital self-efficacy is related to reading achievement only in Slovenia. The study outlined in this chapter calls for nuanced understanding and policy interventions considering these subtle yet crucial differences. 5. Perspectives from CroatiaHrvoje Bakić, Gordana Galić, Urška Štremfel, 2024, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Povzetek: The chapter provides a review of current policy frameworks supporting teachers’ social and emotional competencies and diversity awareness in Croatia. It shows that although these competencies of teachers are not explicitly addressed in educational legislation, strategies and other relevant policy documents, implicitly the need for healthy (social and emotional) development of students is implied. Despite teachers’ social and emotional competencies and diversity awareness not being systemically supported in initial and continuous professional development programmes in Croatia, several examples of such courses and programmes are identified. The integrated supervision for teachers and other professional staff conducted by the National Education and Teacher Training Agency addresses the development of both teachers’ social and emotional competencies and diversity awareness competencies and their needs in the field. In the National Plan for Development of the Education and Training System until 2027, the pressing challenges facing the teaching profession (teacher shortages, working conditions, professional status in society) are planned to be addressed with several measures for advancing teachers’ professional development. The research findings presented in the chapter hold several policy implications indicating that the development of teachers’ social and emotional competencies and diversity awareness should be incorporated into the planned renewal of teacher professional development and thereby be better systemically supported. 6. Differences in neighbourhood equipment between socialist and post-socialist housing estates in Croatia and SloveniaAnđelina Svirčić Gotovac, Ratko Đokić, Boštjan Kefo Kerbler, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The study analyses differences in the quality of neighbourhood equipment between socialist (old) and post-socialist (new) large housing estates in Croatia and Slovenia. A total of 2,193 participants from the four largest cities in Croatia (Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, and Osijek) and the two largest cities in Slovenia (Ljubljana and Maribor) were surveyed in 2022. Satisfaction with neighbourhood equipment was evaluated based on the following aspects of the housing estate: accessibility of primary and secondary services and facilities as well as overall satisfaction with the estate. Residents, regardless of the country, Croatia or Slovenia, and the type of estate, were generally satisfied with all key aspects of the housing estates. The results also indicated a generally higher urbanistic standard in both types of estates in Slovenia compared to those in Croatia. Furthermore, indicators of satisfaction with neighbourhood equipment generally demonstrated weak correlations with residents’ individual characteristics – gender, age, tenure, and length of residence in the estate. In accordance with the initial assumption, socialist estates were not rated worse overall compared to post-socialist housing estates. 7. How well did the healthcare system respond to the healthcare needs of older people with and without dementia during the COVID-19 pandemic : the perception of healthcare providers and older people from the SI4CARE Project in the ADRION RegionStella Fragkiadaki, Dionysia Kontaxopolou, Darja Šemrov, Simon Colnar, Mitja Luštrek, Bojan Blažica, Vlado Dimovski, Sokratis G. Papageorgiou, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: One major challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic was the limited accessibility to healthcare facilities, especially for the older population. The aim of the current study was the exploration of the extent to which the healthcare systems responded to the healthcare needs of the older people with or without cognitive impairment and their caregivers in the Adrion/Ionian region. Data were collected through e-questionnaires regarding the adequacy of the healthcare system and were anonymously administered to older individuals and stakeholder providers in the following countries: Slovenia, Italy (Calabria), Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Montenegro, and Serbia. Overall, 722 older people and 267 healthcare stakeholders participated in the study. During the COVID-19 pandemic, both healthcare stakeholders and the older population claimed that the healthcare needs of the older people and their caregivers increased dramatically in all countries, especially in Italy (Calabria), Croatia and BiH. According to our results, countries from the Adrion/Ionian regions faced significant challenges to adjust to the special needs of the older people during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was possibly due to limited accessibility opportunities to healthcare facilities. These results highlight the need for the development of alternative ways of providing medical assistance and supervision when in-person care is not possible. 8. Comparison of mapping efficiency for small datasets using inverse distance weighting vs. moving average, Northern Croatia Miocene hydrocarbon reservoirJosip Ivšinović, Tomislav Malvić, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Mapping of geological variables in the Croatian part of the Pannonian Basin System (CPBS) is mostly based on small input datasets. In the case of the analyzed hydrocarbon field "B", reservoir "K", due to the complex geological structure and pronounced tectonics, the interpretations are restricted on several blocks, where each has very limited dataset. The porosity (19 data) and permeability (18 data) variables were analyzed. The applied interpolation methods are the Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) and the Moving Average (MA). They were compared and analyzed by visual inspection of the obtained maps, comparison of mathematical background and by calculation of cross-validation (CV). The cross-validation value for the porosity of the "K" reservoir in the case of IDW application is 0.0011, and in the case of MA 0.0010; while in the case of permeability the IDW is 480.84, and in the case of MA 1346.41. According to the visual review of maps, the values of descriptive statistics of estimated values and the results of cross-validation, the IDW method is recommended for mapping the porosity and permeability of reservoirs blocks in the Sava Depression. 9. Hereditary angioedema due to C1-inhibitor deficiency in pediatric patients in Croatia : first national study, diagnostic and prophylactic challengesLjerka Karadža-Lapić, Marko Barešić, Renata Vrsalović, Irena Ivković-Jureković, Saša Sršen, Ingrid Prkačin, Matija Rijavec, Draško Cikojević, 2019, pregledni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare autosomal dominant disease with deficiency (type I) or dysfunction (type II) of C1 inhibitor, caused by mutations in the C1-INH gene, characterized by recurrent submucosal or subcutaneous edemas including skin swelling, abdominal pain and life-threatening episodes of upper airway obstruction. The aim of this study was to investigate healthcare experiences in children with HAE due to C1 inhibitor deficiency (C1-INH-HAE) in Croatia in order to estimate the number of affected children and to recommend management protocols for diagnosis, short-term prophylaxis and acute treatment. Patients were recruited during a 4-year period at five hospitals in Croatia. Complement testing was performed in patients with a positive family history. This pilot study revealed nine pediatric patients positive for C1-INH- HAE type I, aged 1-16 years, four of them asymptomatic. Before the age of one year, C1-INH levels may be lower than in adults; it is advisable to confirm C1-INH-HAE after the age of one year. Plasma-derived C1- INH is recommended as acute and short-term prophylactic treatment. Recombinant C1-INH and icatibant are licensed for the acute treatment of pediatric patients. In Croatia, HAE is still underdiagnosed in pediatric population. 10.
