3. Towards sustained and sustainable management of COVID-19 : an alternative to the simplified return to pre-pandemic normalityFrane Adam, Maruša Gorišek, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The article is focusing on current processes, models, and possible consequences of the easing or cancelling of measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic that we have seen by the end of July 2022. This is observed in the broader context of selected European countries, allowing us to detect differences, similarities, and, especially, the different ways in which these processes have been legitimized by politicians (governments) and experts. The authors agree with a group of biomedical and other experts, scientists, who consider the rapid abolishment of epidemiological measures as a strategy that is considered a too-simplified solution, so are searching for a more sustainable way of managing the pandemic and also “pandemic fatigue”. In the text, the authors advocate a strategy, based on the principles of calibration, combination, and continuity of measures, which is compatible with the sustainable organization of the healthcare system. However, the implementation must be viable and long-term oriented. 6. Authoritarian and populist challenges to democracy correspond to a lack of economic, social, and cultural capitalsTea Golob, Maruša Gorišek, Matej Makarovič, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: We explore attitudes toward democracy in relation to social divisions by focusing on the European Union member states and the corresponding EU political field. Positioning in the European political field is addressed through the theory of social fields as provided by Bourdieu and further conceptualized by Fligstein and McAdam. Drawing on the data obtained from the European Social Survey, we conducted a principal component analysis of the attitudes toward democracy and a correspondence analysis between these attitudes and social, cultural, and economic capitals. We demonstrate that attitudes toward challenging the existing representative democratic order can be seen in terms of two distinct dimensions: authoritarianism and populism. The presence of both corresponds to the lack of one’s possession of economic, social, and cultural capitals and the related political habitus. Those who lack these forms of capital are more prone to support strong authoritarian leaders and are also more likely to endorse conspiracy theories. We can relate this to the problems of exclusion and deprivation related to the lack of political habitus required for effective agency in the political field. 7. Experts in times of pandemic : reframing the debate in the context of structural transformations of the public spherePeter J. Verovšek, Maruša Gorišek, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the important yet controversial role of scientific expertise in public life. While existing debates focus mostly on necessary changes to (1) how experts are involved in public and political debates or (2) the way science itself is conducted, we conceptualise role of digital technology and the rise of the “new” social media through the theoretical framework provided by Jürgen Habermas. Drawing on Habermas’s recent reflections on the new “structural transformation” of the digital public sphere, we identify two areas where science and its interaction in the public sphere can be improved to address declining trust in scientific expertise: namely, digital design and user education. On the one hand, democracies need to focus on the architecture of the public sphere when trying to re-establish trust in science. On the other hand, individual user education addresses the choices individuals are making regarding which information they use when they engage in public debates. 10. Open and citizen science in light of new European research policiesFrane Adam, Maruša Gorišek, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This article discusses the meaning of open science, and in particular the concept of citizen science, in a broader socio-political and scientific context. The authors highlight the ambivalence of these concepts and the lack of critical reflection on the possible (unwanted) negative implications of the establishment of these ideas. The authors address these issues using an international comparative analysis based primarily on documentation and secondary data analysis. Research approaches in the sense of open science and citizen science can, in many cases, be useful for researchers as well as for cognitively active citizens. They can enable the enrichment of knowledge and the potential for (social) innovation. However, there are also risks and unwanted side effects that diminish the relevance and status of scientific research. It is particularly dangerous to create illusions about the potential of ad hoc citizen science projects and their outstanding, immediate results. The campaign for open science may serve as a cover-up for some of the problems and anomalies in the realm of science. The authors also see danger in the potential erosion of the autonomy of science and diverting attention from some of the more pressing problems in science. Ključne besede: open science, citizen science, socialization of science, science policy, action research Objavljeno v DiRROS: 19.01.2026; Ogledov: 234; Prenosov: 77
