1. Mediterranean diet adherence, body composition, and recovery outcomes in hospitalised COVID-19 patients : a mixed-methods studyKaja Teraž, Boštjan Šimunič, Rado Pišot, Saša Pišot, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of nutritional and lifestyle factors in recovery from severe illness, yet their role in post-hospitalization rehabilitation remains insufficiently understood. Methods: This study investigated the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet, body composition, and recovery-related outcomes in individuals following severe COVID-19 using an explanatory mixed-methods design. Thirtynine patients were assessed at hospital discharge and after 8 weeks of unsupervised rehabilitation in a single-centre prospective cohort study conducted in Slovenia (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04860206, https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT04860206). Results: Quantitative analyses showed a significant increase in fat-free mass over time and positive associations between fat-free mass and adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Qualitative findings further revealed that individuals with higher adherence demonstrated structured routines, adaptive coping strategies, and greater psychosocial resilience during recovery. Discussion: Together, these findings suggest that adherence to a Mediterranean dietary pattern, alongside related lifestyle behaviors, may support favorable body composition and enhance recovery processes following severe illness. This study provides an integrated perspective on physiological and behavioral determinants of recovery, highlighting the potential of nutrition-based approaches in post- COVID-19 rehabilitation. Kranjska Gora, with its outstanding alpine setting, once again offers an ideal backdrop for learning, experience, and inspiration. In parallel with the main conference programme, the 2026 edition will also host a dedicated symposium entitled EASE – Empowering Academic Snowsport Education. This integrated event will place a special focus on the exchange of good practices, knowledge, and experiences in the education of snowsport professionals within schools and universities. The EASE symposium builds directly on the highly successful first academic meeting held in Bulgaria and hosted by the National Sport Academy in 2025, which was directly supported by IAESS. 4. Management of patients with protein s deficiency : focus on clinical course and direct oral anticoagulantNicola Altamura, Filippo Giorgio Di Girolamo, Paola Pradella, Martina Cavalet, Federica Pellicori, Pierandrea Vinci, Emiliano Panizon, Giovanni Cominotto, Kaja Teraž, Gianni Biolo, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Background Protein S (PS) is a cofactor of protein C (PC) which, when activated to activated PC (APC), mainly acts to degrade coagulation factor Va and VIIIa, and its deficiency may trigger an array of venous thromboembolic events (VTE); when unprovoked and life-threatening, these need indefinite anticoagulation. Direct oral anti coagulants (doac) are efficient drugs in therapy and prevention of VTE, although the optimal prophylactic doses in different conditions are not identified. Methods General characteristics and clinical events of 33 PS deficient patients (7 uneventful, 10 carrying also other thrombophilic conditions) were recorded from their medical records. Patients suffering from VTE underwent LMWH/Fondaparinux therapy followed by a full dose of doac (apixaban or rivaroxaban) and then a reduced dose doac (apixaban and rivaroxaban). Results Average, lowest and highest PS levels measured during follow-up were higher in male patients (p = 0.001). The cumulative prevalence of patients taking drugs acting on central nervous system (opioids, antidepressants, antiepileptic, antimigraine, antipsychotic) was 33%. Three minor hemorrhages were observed during the full-dose and one during the reduced doac therapy, while 3 VTE (1 pulmonary embolism and 2 deep venous thrombosis) occurred exclusively during the reduced-dose doac therapy (p = 0.033 Vs Full dose, 8.1 100patient/yr 95% CI 4–15). Compliance during the reduced-dose therapy was good according to the circulating levels of doac. In survival analysis, the only variable associated with VTE recurrence was PS deficiency combined with thrombophilic defects (p = 0.049). Conclusions Free PS deficiency affects the quality of life in many ways and a low dose doac in PS deficient patients is only partially effective in secondary prevention of VTE. 7. Multidimensional effects of Covid-19 lockdowns on youth athletes : evidence from Slovenian coachesSaša Pišot, Ivana Milovanović, Kaja Teraž, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The COVID-19 pandemic, which emerged in early 2020, caused widespread disruptions to youth sport, including curriculum-based physical activity, organized sports, and active transportation. This study investigated the impact of repeated lockdowns on organized youth sport participation, physical fitness, skill development, and psychosocial well-being in Slovenia. An online survey was conducted between November and December 2021 with 116 coaches of U13–U19 athletes across multiple sports disciplines. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric analyses were employed to examine participation trends, training adaptations, and perceived athlete outcomes. Following the first lockdown, 14.6% of athletes dropped out, while 6.5% of teams reported increased membership. After the summer break, participation rebounded, and the second lockdown had a smaller impact, indicating partial resilience in youth sport engagement. Training frequency and modality were substantially affected, with 20% of coaches not implementing remote sessions and fewer than half conducting post-lockdown fitness assessments. Coaches reported declines in general physical fitness (71%) and sport-specific skills (70%), heterogeneous changes in body mass, and reduced self-confidence and motivation in over 50% of athletes, whereas team spirit remained relatively stable. A significant association between perceived changes in body mass and motivation highlighted the role of physical self-concept in supporting engagement. These findings demonstrate that prolonged interruptions to organized youth sport have multidimensional effects on physical, technical, and psychosocial development. Future research should explore long-term consequences, identify effective mitigation strategies, and consider sport-specific, age, and gender-related factors to enhance resilience in youth sports systems under exceptional circumstances. 8. Prevalenca sarkopenije in povezani dejavniki tveganja v Sloveniji : raziskovalni podatki, obravnavani v doktorskem deluKatarina Puš, Miloš Kalc, Saša Pišot, Kaja Teraž, Jure Urbanc, Matej Kleva, Uroš Marušič, Manca Peskar, Luka Šlosar, Boštjan Šimunič, 2026, zaključena znanstvena zbirka raziskovalnih podatkov Povzetek: Podatkovni niz vsebuje anonimizirane presečne podatke, zbrane pri 654 starejših odraslih (≥ 60 let) iz Slovenije. Podatki so bili pridobljeni v okviru presečne raziskave, usmerjene v razvrščanje sarkopenije in analizo mišičnih značilnosti. V podatkovni niz so vključeni demografski podatki (starost, spol), antropometrične meritve ter rezultati meritev mišične jakosti, telesne zmogljivosti in telesne sestave. Mišična jakost je bila ocenjena z merjenjem jakosti stiska pesti in testom petkratnega vstajanja s stola. Telesna zmogljivost je bila ocenjena s hitrostjo hoje in testom vstani in pojdi. Podatki o telesni sestavi in mišični masi so bili pridobljeni z električno bioimpedančno analizo in vključujejo pusto telesno maso, skeletno mišično maso, apendikularno skeletno mišično maso ter indekse, prilagojene telesni višini. Kontraktilne lastnosti skeletnih mišic so bile ocenjene s tenziomiografijo treh mišic spodnjih okončin, pri čemer so bili zabeleženi parametri zakasnitvenega časa, časa kontrakcije, radialnega premika in hitrosti kontrakcije. Dodatni podatki vključujejo prehransko stanje (Mini Nutritional Assessment), gibalno aktivnost in sedentarne navade (Global Physical Activity Questionnaire) ter kognitivne funkcije (Test povezovanja – del A in B). Preiskovanci so bili razvrščeni v skupine glede na več diagnostičnih algoritmov sarkopenije (EWGSOP, EWGSOP2 in njegove različice, SDOC, IWGS in FNIH). Podatki so bili zbrani po standardiziranih protokolih, anonimizirani in opremljeni z metapodatki, kar omogoča njihovo ponovno uporabo v skladu z načeli FAIR. 9. Prehrana - podporni steber učinkovitostiKaja Teraž, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Povzetek: Pravilno uravnotežena prehrana vojakov pomeni ustrezen energijski vnos, ki vsebuje optimalno razporeditev makro- in mikrohranil. Je nujno potrebna za krepitev zdravja, preprečevanje bolezni in okužb, odpravljanje poškodb in vzdrževanje telesne temperature. Vojaška populacija je po spolu, starosti in zadolžitvah heterogena ter opravlja fizično in kognitivno različne poklicne naloge. Prehranski načrti v vojski morajo tako izpolnjevati različne potrebe po energiji in posamičnih hranilih. Posledice neustrezne prehrane vojakov so lahko previsoka telesna masa, zmanjšana imunska odpornost, podaljšano okrevanje po bolezni in poškodbi in oslabljena telesna zmogljivost. Neustrezen vnos specifičnih hranil, kot so beljakovine, železo, kalcij in vitamin D, pripomore k poslabšani regeneraciji vojakov, kar hkrati vpliva na povečano možnost pojavnosti poškodb. Potrebe po energiji in hranilih se dodatno spreminjajo glede na različne zunanje dejavnike, kot so okoljske temperature in nadmorska višina. Na višji nadmorski višini energijske potrebe narastejo predvsem zaradi hipoksije, dodatne opreme in oblačil vojakov. Prehrana na terenu je pogosto otežena tudi zaradi prenosa živil s seboj, saj ta v nahrbtniku predstavljajo dodatno težo, ki jo morajo prenašati vojaki. Zato se priporoča, da vojaki uživajo energijsko bogatejšo hrano, ki pa ima pogosto nizko vrednost vitaminov in mineralov. Hkrati je treba biti pozoren na zadosten vnos beljakovin, saj lahko negativno dušikovo/beljakovinsko ravnovesje spodbudi izgubo mišične mase. V ekstremnih okoljskih pogojih je treba zagotoviti tudi ustrezno hidracijsko stanje s pitjem vode ter dodajanjem soli in/ali sladkorjev in/ali škroba. 10. Prevalence of sarcopenia among Slovenian older adults and associated risk factorsKatarina Puš, Saša Pišot, Uroš Marušič, Manca Peskar, Kaja Teraž, Miloš Kalc, Helena Blažun Vošner, Peter Kokol, Jernej Završnik, Boštjan Šimunič, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Introduction: Sarcopenia is a multifaceted condition affecting between 10 and 16% of the global population, and although multiple classification algorithms exist, no prevalence has been reported for a representative sample of the Slovenian population. Furthermore, multiple behavioural factors, such as malnutrition, physical inactivity, sedentary lifestyle and lower cognitive function, can contribute to the risk of sarcopenia. This study aims to: a) determine sarcopenia prevalence among Slovenian older adults according to different classification algorithms, b) compare the agreement among the algorithms and c) evaluate the relationship between proposed risk factors and sarcopenia. Methods: 654 participants (≥60 years, 30.4% males) have been classified into sarcopenia groups according to eight algorithms, and agreement (Fleiss K) between them was calculated. Additionally, age, sex, nutritional status, physical activity, sedentary levels and cognitive function were assessed as sarcopenia risk/protective factors. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia according to EWGSOP2 was 4.1%, ranging from 2.1% to 15.3%, when classified by all eight algorithms. Overall agreement between algorithms was weak (K=.429; 95% CI .414 to .444) with 0.6% of participants classified as sarcopenic by all eight algorithms. Adequate nutrition and physical activity were identified as protective factors, while age, lower cognitive function and sedentary lifestyle were considered risk factors. Conclusion: Sarcopenia prevalence among the Slovenian general population was lower than in the global population. We can conclude that different sarcopenia algorithms lead to a different prevalence of sarcopenia. It is of great importance to be cautious when comparing prevalences among studies and to further validate the classification algorithms.
