1. Youth Labour Brigades in Yugoslavia and Representations of Volunteerism : A Study of Participation in Restored Federal Labour Actions by The People’s Youth in the District of KoperGašper Mithans, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The author discusses the issue of volunteerism in labour actions in Yugoslavia raised by several scholars, distinguishing between different phases, which mostly corresponded to changes in the socialist regime and society in general. With its research based on literature and archival sources, the question of the voluntary character of the youth labour actions is explored. The district of Koper in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the crucial period in the process of the transformation of youth labour actions, is paid particular attention, drawing on the experiences of the brigadiers and the challenges that the People’s Youth had to face.

Seeing Mary and becoming Marija : Tsuneko Kondō-Kawase’s bridging religious and cultural boundariesHelena Motoh, Gašper Mithans, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This article examines the extraordinary conversion story of Tsuneko Kondō-Kawase, a Japanese woman who became Marija Skušek upon her baptism and marriage in Ljubljana in 1927. Within a single hour at the Ljubljana Bishop’s Pala-ce, Kawase was baptised, confirmed, married, and her two children were baptised and confirmed. Her swift conversion and claims of Mary's apparitions captured public attention. This study situates her testimony within the broader context of religious conversion, the rise of pluralistic beliefs in a predominantly Catholic so-ciety, and the socio-political climate of the era. Central to her narrative are visions of Mary’s crowned image, shaped by Chinese Catholic traditions and Slovenian Marian devotion. Tsuneko’s experience underscores the complexity of non-Euro-pean conversions and the adaptability required by clergy to address diverse cultural identities. Tsuneko’s case highlights personal agency in navigating religious trans-formation, blending her Japanese and Chinese heritage with Slovenian Catholic influences. Her reinterpretation of Marian imagery illustrates how converts with their understanding of religious symbols actively engage to forge new identities. As a transitional figure, Tsuneko’s story sheds light on the interplay between per-sonal experiences and broader cultural adaptations in conversion processes. This analysis enriches the understanding of religious transformation, emphasizing the significance of individual narratives in exploring themes of faith, identity, and in-tegration across cultural and historical boundaries.

International Conference Religious Conversions and Atheization in 20th Century Central and Eastern Europe : Koper, 22-24 April 20242024, druge monografije in druga zaključena dela Povzetek: Using a broad-based understanding of religious conversions which includes atheization and religious revival, the conference aims to address the issues related to religious transformation in Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th century and different types of religious agency that transcend established norms, legal frameworks and cultural expectations. The speakers will go beyond the usual concept of religious conversion as an exclusively individual, voluntary spiritual phenomenon and will examine conversions that embody the myriad motives, forms, and socio-political particularities which condition the changes of worldviews as a process that frequently encompasses obstacles, pragmatism and profound life alterations. The conference will contribute to wide-ranging but – especially in Central and Eastern Europe – largely unexplored topics from a more nuanced understanding of the mechanisms that drive religious change and religion-state relations.
Taking into account new research perspectives, scholars from the fields of history, anthropology, study of religions, ethnology, sociology, theology and political science will provide new insights into the following topics:
- religious conversions as mechanisms for personal gain, coercive tactics and the (gradual) disestablishment of religious institutions;
- state-imposed atheization processes;
- religious upsurges of (non-)dominant religions, relations between religion and state, and the (re)shaping of religious policies in practise.
