1. Evaluating alternative transformation pathways of wood-based bioeconomy : application of an input–output modelDomen Arnič, Efstratios Loizou, Špela Ščap, Peter Prislan, Luka Juvančič, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The wood-based bioeconomy is one of the main pillars of sustainable transformation and decarbonisation of the economy, as it promotes the use of renewable resources, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and supports the development of eco-friendly industries. The paper provides quantitative insight into the potential impacts of transformation of the wood-based bioeconomy in Slovenia, a small, export-oriented economy with ample, but sub-optimally used, forest resources. The analysis uses an input–output (I-O) model to estimate I-O multipliers of sectors representing the wood-based bioeconomy and to capture their direct and indirect impacts on the Slovenian economy. The baseline performance of the wood bioeconomy sectors and their potential to induce economic activity (Scenario A) are estimated with an adjusted I-O model (based on the national I-O table for 2015), in which hybrid sectors are divided into conventional and bio-based segments. Alternative transformation pathways are translated into four additional scenarios. While Scenario B foresees progress in efficiency and integration within the existing structure of transactions, Scenario C (increased energy use of wood biomass) and Scenarios D/D+ (technology- and capital-intensive restructuring) represent two extreme restructuring pathways of the sector. The results of scenario analysis with the I-O model show that the changes in the input requirement structure of the Slovenian wood-based bioeconomy could result in up to a 17% increase in total output, up to a 20% increase in the number of employees, and up to a 16% increase in incomes, all of them attributed to the most optimistic scenario (D+). The results of the study provide quantified assessments underpinning strategic planning for the wood-based bioeconomy, both in the industry and public policy spheres. 2. Different patterns of inter-annual variability in mean vessel area and tree-ring widths of beech from provenance trials in Slovenia and HungaryJožica Gričar, Domen Arnič, Luka Krajnc, Peter Prislan, Gregor Božič, Marjana Westergren, Mátyás Csaba, Hojka Kraigher, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: International provenance trials of ecologically and economically important tree species are crucial to deciphering the influence of environmental factors and intraspecific variability on tree growth and performance under climate change to guide assisted gene flow and assisted migration of tree provenances and species. In this context, we compared inter-annual trends in tree-ring widths (carbon sequestration potential) and vessel characteristics (conductivity optimisation) of four beech provenances in two international provenance trials, one in Slovenia (Kamenski hrib, a core beech growing site) and one in Hungary (Bucsuta, a marginal beech site) in 2009–2019. We found different patterns of inter-annual variability in mean vessel area and tree-ring widths among provenances and sites, pointing to diverse genetic background and environmental influence on these two wood-anatomical traits. The average values of the vessel area varied less between provenances at Kamenski hrib than at Bucsuta. Weather conditions differently affected tree-ring width and mean vessel area. Furthermore, the length of the period of response of vessel area to the analysed weather conditions differed in summer and winter periods. The differences in the mean vessel area within the tree ring were more pronounced in the weather-wise extreme years, regardless of the provenance. Consistent with previous studies, we confirmed that site conditions affect the climate sensitivity of trees, which is more pronounced at marginal sites or in extreme years. The findings on how different environmental conditions affect the radial growth of young beech trees of different origin are very important for future forest management. 4. How beech provenance affects the structure of secondary xylem, leaf traits, and the ectomycorrhizal community under optimal growth conditionsTanja Mrak, Jožica Gričar, Tina Unuk Nahberger, Gregor Božič, Luka Krajnc, Peter Prislan, Domen Arnič, Tom Levanič, Hojka Kraigher, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Beyond growth parameters and drought tolerance, comparatively little is known about the functioning of different beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) provenances. We investigated properties of leaves, stem secondary xylem, and ectomycorrhiza (ECM), and explored their interdependencies to identify the best performing beech provenance in optimal growth conditions. The study was conducted on 23-year-old trees in a provenance trial. The investigated provenances originated from Atlantic (Belgium—BE), Alpine (Italy—IT, Slovenia—SI), and continental climates (the Czech Republic—CZ). A significant effect of provenance was observed for stem vessel diameters and conductive area, as well as for foliar %C, δ13C, δ15N, and δ18O. δ13C as a proxy of intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) showed that the highest iWUE was achieved in BE provenance. Individuals with a better iWUE had wider growth rings regardless of provenance. Better iWUE was associated with lower specific leaf area (SLA). ECM community composition and diversity indices did not differ significantly among the provenances. Specific ECM taxa were associated with individuals with high SLA, δ13C, δ15N, and δ18O. In optimal growth conditions with no stress events, BE is a promising provenance due to an efficient water conducting system with high vessel diameters and conductive area, and high iWUE, while Alpine provenances showed an adaptation of their water conducting system to freezing conditions at their original locations. Integrating findings from different compartments improves our understanding of functioning of different beech provenances. 7. Makroekonomski učinki proizvodnje in predelave lesa listavcevDomen Arnič, Peter Prislan, Luka Juvančič, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: As far as the utilization of the value-added potential of hardwood assortments is concerned, we have considerable reserves in Slovenia. These could be exploited mainly by increasing the economic use of roundwood in Slovenia and by developing more technologically advanced processing methods for roundwood. The aim of this paper is to assess the untapped potential of the forest-wood chain in Slovenia using input-output models, focusing on the use of hardwood. For the whole forest-wood chain, we assessed the existing situation and tested five scenarios for the improvement of the forest-wood chain in Slovenia. We developed a national input-output model to evaluate possible scenarios for the future development of the wood-based bioeconomy. The results of scenario analysis of the input-output model show that the Slovenian wood-based bioeconomy can achieve up to 20% higher production value, a 24% increase in employment and 19% increase in household income in the future through restructuring of economic activities. In the paper, we discuss how upgrading the forestry and wood-processing industry (according to the defined scenarios) could be achieved by increasing the processing capacity of hardwoods and provide recommendations for decision makers. 8. Analiza kakovostne strukture okroglega lesa listavcevLuka Krajnc, Domen Arnič, Peter Prislan, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The research presented in this study addressed the distribution of volume across different log grades in three hardwood species: European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) and English oak (Quercus robur L.). Standing trees were selected, marked, and measured. Afterwards the trees were felled and bucked into assortments according to national legislation regarding assortment grades and requirements for each assortment grade. Each individual assortment was measured and classified into one of the national log quality grades. Proportions of log volume with different grades within individual tree volumes were calculated and presented in this study. Differences were found in log grade volume distribution between different species and diameter classes. By following the national grading system for assortments, between 40% and 50% of total volume will be usable assortments in hardwoods Ključne besede: logs, hardwoods, volume, quality, log grading Objavljeno v DiRROS: 03.08.2023; Ogledov: 1341; Prenosov: 749
