Stress among employees in psychiatric nursing

Abstract: Introduction: Evidence suggests that stressful situations are frequent in the field of psychiatry and that professionals working in this speciality are more prone to stress. Stressful situations may be compounded by ignoring the principles and strategies of therapeutic communication in all interactions with patients. The purpose of the research was to determine the presence of stress among the nursing team members. Methods: The research is based on a quantitative methodology; the data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. The sample consisted of 73 nurses working in a special social welfare institution (n = 37) and in a psychiatric hospital (n = 36). The survey was conducted in the first half of the year 2016. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used. Results: The list of stress factors most frequently reported by the participants include low pay (n = 40, 55 %), poor interpersonal relationships in the workplace (n = 23, 32 %), and the sense of insecurity due to unpredictable behaviour of patients (n = 32, 44 %). One fifth of the respondents are regularly subjected to patient physical violence and psychological abuse in the workplace (n = 14, 19 %) and a large majority (n = 53, 72.5 %) are frequently exposed to dangerous situations. The respondents are not fully aware of the crucial importance of therapeutic communication with the patients (n = 38, 52 %). Discussion and conclusion: It is impossible to completely avoid stressful situations in psychiatric settings. Psychiatric nurses should possess good communication skills and the ability to develop good interpersonal relationships.

Anxiety levels in employees and students in psychiatric nursing

Abstract: Introduction: Several research finding indicate that nursing care professionals are often faced with situations which may lead to anxiety. The aim of the present research was to determine the prevalence and typical signs of anxiety among nursing employees and nursing students in psychiatric settings. Methods: The Burns Anxiety Inventory was used as an assessment tool to measure anxiety. The research sample consisted of 242 participants. The data collected were processed by the descriptive statistics, Levene's test, the ANOVA statistical test, the Welch's t-test, and the post hoc analysis. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to measure the strength of the association between the variables. Results: The results of the current study show that nearly half of the participants experience anxiety, but the differences were noted as regards their anxiety thoughts (p = 0.039). Anxiety feelings are more prevalent in female students (p = 0.046). Habitual smokers (p = 0.030) and casual smokers (p = 0.020) are more likely to develop anxious feelings and physical signs of anxiety. The anxiety signs are also more pronounced in the respondents with self-assessed lower economic status (p = 0.001) and poor self-rated health (p = 0.0001). Discussion and conclusion: The professionals and students in psychiatric nursing often encounter situations conducive to the development of anxiety. Further studies on the current topic are therefore recommended to design adequate educational programmes to timely recognise anxiety symptoms and to implement mutual and self-help measure.

Early stress detection in forest trees using a nanobody-functionalized electrochemical biosensor for ascorbate peroxidase

Abstract: Forest environments are exposed to multiple stressful factors of both abiotic and biotic nature such as heavy metal contamination, drought, or pest infestations which may lead to their massive decline. We designed a comprehensive approach for isolating, producing and functionalizing reagents suitable for the affordable detection of forest plant stress biomarkers with the aim to provide quantitative data to assess plant stress fluctuation and, possibly, to design mitigation strategies. We first optimized a panning protocol to recover nanobodies targeting shared sequences that could cross-react with both Pisum sativum and Populus nigra ascorbate peroxidase (APX). After their production as recombinant constructs and their extensive biophysical and biochemical characterization, such reagents were exploited as the immunocapture element of an electrochemical biosensor conceived as a potential point-of-care device. Such biosensor could detect both pea and poplar APX in leaf extracts and could be used to clearly discriminate between control and heavy metal-stressed poplar plants based on their APX activity, even before the appearance of any phenotypic symptom. The combination of fast and inexpensive reagent production with the development of portable diagnostics opens the opportunity for large-scale, on-site surveys of forest trees.

Impact of spaceflight on endocrine, metabolic and kidney function: : current evidence, open issues, and potential countermeasures

Abstract: Changes in endocrine and kidney functions have been associated with spaceflight. Here, we discuss the most relevant evidence about the impact of spaceflight on the cardiometabolic system, the cardiorenal function and the reproductive/gonadal axis. Notably, these changes appear to be interrelated with other organ/system functions, suggesting the need of a systemic approach leading to a more comprehensive understanding of physiological and health-related impacts of the space environment. Therefore, this review will also focus on the need to move space endocrinological research to multi-omics approaches and the implementation of “machine learning” and “data mining” strategies.

Dynamic changes in oxidative stress biomarkers in a child with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome : a longitudinal case study

Abstract: Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) is the most prevalent glomerular illness in children. Even while immunologic processes are well-established, oxidative stress is becoming more widely acknowledged as a significant factor in the etiopathogenesis of illness. Assessing its activity and treatment response may be made easier with the use of trustworthy, non-invasive indicators to track redox balance. We report on the oxidative stress levels of a 10.7-year-old boy with INS with five clinical time points in one year. The FRAS5 analyzer was used to calculate the oxidative stress index (OSI), plasma antioxidant capacity (PAT) and derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) as biomarkers. A 4-tier oxidative state classification scheme based on d-ROM and PAT thresholds was used to interpret the values. The patient had low antioxidant defense, moderate oxidative and increased OSI at relapses, a positive transition to reduced oxidative burden and enhanced defense during remission. The order of events showed a dynamic redox response associated with glucocorticoid (GC) medication and disease activity. The potential value of d-ROM, PAT, and OSI as dynamic biomarkers for tracking disease activity, response to treatment and residual oxidative burden in pediatric INS is supported by this case. To confirm their function in more comprehensive clinical decision-making, more research is required.

“I somehow survived... but I will never do it again” : teachers’ perspectives on past and future educational disruptions in Slovenia

Abstract: Five years after the COVID-19 pandemic, namely, the biggest disruption to education in the last century, this article provides insights into the consequences it holds for teachers’ well-being, their (non)preparedness for and support needed in any such future disruptions in Slovenia. By utilising the Job Demands–Resources Model, insights are provided concerning job demands (stress) and job resources (support) on different levels (individual, micro, meso, macro, chrono) of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. The importance of complementing large-scale, representative, quantitative data (from the Responses to Educational Disruption Survey (REDS)) with qualitative data obtained from two focus groups comprising eight teachers in total is demonstrated to gain a comprehensive understanding of teachers’ well-being during educational disruptions. This study confirms that the intertwining of different levels in Bronfenbrenner’s socio-ecological system explains job demands (sources of stress) and job resources (support for teacher well-being) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The majority of stressors at the time of the pandemic were identified on the micro level, whereas sources of support were primarily located on the individual and meso (school) levels. For any future educational disruptions, however, the most significant sources of support for teachers’ well-being are expected on the macro level (system and society).

Correlation of oxidative stress biomarkers with activity of pediatric idiopathic nephrotic syndrome

Abstract: Background/Objectives: This study investigated the correlation of oxidative stress biomarkers with the activity of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) in Slovenian children. Methods: In this prospective study, sequential plasma and urine samples from 20 children with INS in different phases of disease activity were taken: at first disease presentation or relapse (before glucocorticoid (GC) treatment), at time of remission achievement, and after discontinuation of GC treatment. This study measured oxidative stress biomarkers, such as 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), hexanoyl-lysine (HEL) adduct, dityrosine (DiY), and 15-isoprostane F2t, using competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and assessed oxidative status using the FRAS 5 analytical system, which enables rapid photometric measurement of both oxidative and antioxidant capacity from biological fluids. Two complementary tests were performed: the d-ROMs test (derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites) and the PAT (plasma antioxidant test). The oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated as the ratio between them. Results: Concentrations of isoprostanes in urine were statistically significantly lower in patients at first disease presentation or relapse compared to time of remission achievement. Values of PAT test in serum were significantly highest after GC treatment. Values of d-ROMs test in serum were significantly lower at time of remission achievement compared to first disease presentation or relapse. Values of 8-OHdG, HEL, DiY (in plasma and urine), isoprostanes, and OSI in plasma did not statistically significantly differ in various phases of disease activity. Conclusions: Isoprostanes in urine and PAT in serum could serve as potential biomarkers of oxidative stress and disease activity in children with INS.
