Exchanging the “Progressive Experiences” in a Transnational Perspective : Nationality, Economy and Federalism in Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia in the 1960sTomaž Ivešić, 2022, original scientific article Abstract: This paper focuses on the transnational aspects of the exchanges of experiences (in nationality policies, economy, and federalization) between the Yugoslav and Czechoslovak intellectual elites. By drawing parallels between the two cases, a striking resemblance can be seen. While Slovak intellectual elites used Yugoslavia as a role model to solve the Czechoslovak national question, the latter also served as one of the models for the economic reform of Ota Šik and for the federal transformation of the Czechoslovak state under Zdeněk Mlynář’s watch.

Vidmar, 2023, original scientific article Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between fairy tales, sexuality, and national identity in socialist Slovenia. Theoretically, it builds on the canonical work by Bruno Bettelheim, The Uses of Enchantment. The main objective of the analysis is to interrogate the Freudian sexual script in relation to Slovene national identity formation. For this purpose, I study two fairy tales from the socialist period, France Bevk’s Peter Klepec and Moj dežnik je lahko balon by Ela Peroci. The concepts of family romance and infantile citizenship are applied.

3. Integration of Peasants into the Social Security Systems in Socialist SloveniaŽarko Lazarević, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: The present contribution examines the integration of peasants into the social security systems in the second half of the twentieth century. In the first part of the article, the historical context (ideological background, agricultural and social policies, structural changes) is presented, while the second part focuses on the long-term social position of agriculture and peasants. The third part examines the acute problems of agricultural poverty and systemic measures to improve the situation of the agricultural population, based on the example of health and pension insurance.

4. Old Age Poverty : The Gender Differences in Lifelong DeprivationsOtto Gerdina, Vesna Leskošek, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: This article examines gender differences in old-age poverty in Slovenia through a life course perspective. Using qualitative in-depth interviews with 33 individuals aged 65 and older, the article identifies gender specific patterns of deprivation. Findings reveal that both men and women experience fragmented work histories and engagement in the grey economy, but women face additional disadvantages due to lower education levels, caregiving responsibilities, and persistent gender pay gaps. The insight into the interplay between structural inequalities and individual trajectories in shaping old-age poverty contributes to an understanding of the ways in which gender specific disadvantages accumulate over time.

By combining theory on memorials in heritage studies with active engagement with the trail, the paper addresses our relationship with heritage as a multi-layered and dynamic process.

The absence of workers in Slovenian industrial heritageNina Vodopivec, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: The article points at the importance of (re)interpreting industrial heritage through the lens of workers’ experiences. After identifying difficulties in shaping industrial heritage in the context of post-socialist and post-indus-trial transformation, it examines industrial workers’ experiences of the closure of the Mura garment factory. Industrial heritage is presented as a potential site of value creation for the labour invested, where workers could regain their self-esteem, social respect and recognition, and where their dispossession could be acknowledged.

The problem with courtesy : wooing the Catholic Church in late socialist SloveniaJure Ramšak, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: particularly in comparison with the neighbouring republic of Croatia, where the ethnicization of religion, beginning in the early 1970s, was rather pronoun-ced, relations between the Catholic Church and state authorities in Slovenia – the northernmost republic of Yugoslavia – remained relatively calm and cooperative throughout the late socialist period. Based on an analysis of a wide range of pu-blic and archival documents, this paper demonstrates how Slovenian religious policy was proposed as a sophisticated example of how believers could be success-fully integrated into modern socialist society, and was presented as such to Vati-can diplomats, international experts, and foreign journalists. Up until 1990, the communication between party officials and the Church hierarchy conveyed a di-stinct tone of courtesy, and local priests generally encountered a supportive or at least unobstructive attitude when, for instance, proposing the construction of new churches. At the same time, however, the more independent intellectuals, Catholi-cs and Marxists alike, who urged the party to abandon its orthodox Marxist-Leni-nist understanding of religion in favour of a genuine dialogue, were marginalized. Thus, a proper debate about a topic so essential for socialist secular society never took place, and the late socialist religious policy left behind an ambiguous legacy.

9. “Toeing the line” : The Journal Grlica—Caught between Lofty Socialist Goals and Quality Music for Young PeopleBoštjan Udovič, 2024, original scientific article Abstract: This paper seeks to underscore the significance of Grlica as a pivotal journal for youth music in Slovenia from 1953 to 1988. It explores how Grlica played a crucial role in conveying the ideological and socio-political aspects of the socialist system prevalent during that period. Applying historical-developmental and historical-comparative methods, the paper presents three key findings. Firstly, Grlica was primarily a professional journal, with little to no ideological components. Secondly, the ones we do find were predominantly present in the initial period of Grlica’s publication, i.e., until 1965, becoming increasingly rare as time wore on. Thirdly, composers who published their works in Grlica held diverse ideological and musical orientations, indicating that Grlica was not only a professional journal but also characterised by broad-minded and open perspectives.

10. "Kosovo, My Land"? : Slovenians, Albanians, and the Limits of Yugoslav Social CohesionJure Ramšak, 2021, original scientific article Abstract: The author examines the Kosovo crisis in the context of the pluralisation and democratisation of Slovenian society in the 1980s and early 1990s. This issue became a catalyst not only for the repositioning of structures of party leadership in relation to Belgrade, but also with respect to general public debates. By charting individual stages of the critical decade of 1981%1991, the author presents Slovenian perceptions of Kosovo%s political, economic, and social issues, first through the works of neo-Marxist critics and later through the activism of a group of left-liberal intellectuals, which included the provision of legal support and a high-profile social action related to the violations of Kosovar Albanian human rights. The author discusses the constraints encountered by this brief attempt to establish a pan-Yugoslav civil society initiative. At the same time, he shows how the complexities of the Kosovo crisis were used to coalesce the Slovenian nation into flight from Yugoslavia.
