1. Diversity of needle terpenes among Pinus taxaBiljana M. Nikolić, Dalibor Ballian, Zorica S. Mitić, 2025, review article Abstract: Essential oils are mixtures of volatile compounds often found in the leaves, wood, and fruits of coniferous trees and shrubs. The composition and abundance of individual oil components vary across different plant parts. Terpenes (monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, triterpenes) dominate in the essential oils of many plants. They are the most abundant class of secondary metabolites, with plants containing over a hundred of them at varying concentrations. The terpene profile of certain species consists of a few dominant (abundant) components and numerous less abundant ones. It is believed that the biological activity of essential oil mostly depends on the dominant terpene components. In most of the analyzed Pinus species, the most abundant terpene compounds are α-pinene, β-pinene, δ-3-carene, β-caryophyllene, limonene/β-phellandrene, and germacrene D. In certain taxa, additional dominant compounds include α-cedrol, bornyl acetate, caryophyllene oxide, α-phellandrene, trimethylbicyclo [3.1.1]hept-2-ene, 2H-benzocyclohepten-2-one, phenylethyl butyrate, 4-epi-isocembrol, β-thujene, and thunbergol. Moreover, compounds with abundances exceeding 15% include methyl chavicol (=estragole), geranylene, myrcene, γ-muurolene, sabinene, and abieta-7,13-diene. It can be concluded that the terpene profiles of the needles of the analyzed pine taxa depend on the type of chromatographic columns, the method of obtaining essential oils, the origin of the trees (in natural habitat or artificial plantation), the age of the needles, the variety, and the season in which the needles were collected. 4. Raziskava cemprina (Pinus cembra L.) na robnem vzhodnem območju Alp v SlovenijiUroš Marolt, Gregor Božič, Andreja Ferreira, Gorazd Mlinšek, Robert Brus, 2017, original scientific article Abstract: Raziskali smo edini znani domnevno avtohtoni nahajališči cemprina (Pinus cembra L.) v Sloveniji: pod Krnesom in pri Beli peči, obe v pogorju Smrekovca. Z napravo GPS smo določili lokacije osebkov cemprina, jih premerili, določili razdaljo do najbližjega sosednjega cemprina, ocenili zdravstveno stanje, z metodo izvrtkov določili starost dveh osebkov in zabeležili znake pomlajevanja. 5. The genetic consequences of population marginality : a case study in maritime pineAdélaïde Theraroz, Santiago C. González-Martínez, Carlos Guadaño-Peyrot, Juliette Archambeau, Sara Pinosio, Francesca Bagnoli, Andrea Piotti, Camilla Avanzi, Giovanni G. Vendramin, Ricardo Alía, Delphine Grivet, Marjana Westergren, 2024, complete scientific database of research data Abstract: This dataset was produced by a consortium of European research Intitutes. For the data collection, needles were sampled from a total of 1,510 individuals from 82 maritime pine populations covering all previously identified gene pools throughout the species range. 10,185 SNPs were genotyped from the multispecies 4TREE SNPs chip (chip produced within the framework of the B4est project). This dataset was used to carry out a population genetics study. 6. Age-dependent moisture response of conifers near their cold range limitJan Tumajer, Grudd Håkan, Jernej Jevšenak, Andreas J. Kirchhefer, Francesco Marotta, Jiří Mašek, Kiara Maria Nowatzki, Nikolaus Obojes, Markus Stoffel, Václav Treml, Jelena Lange, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: Growth dynamics of cold subarctic and subalpine forests are primarily sensitive to temperature, but growth responses may vary across regions or shift over tree ontogeny. Systematic assessments of spatial, interspecific, and demographic variation in temperature and moisture limitation of tree growth at cold distribution margins are essential for enhancing our understanding of how these ecosystems will evolve under climate regimes. To address this gap, we built a network of 22 tree-ring width chronologies from cold forests covering two regions (Fennoscandia, European Alps), three species (Pinus sylvestris, Pinus cembra, Larix decidua), and two age cohorts (45–100 and >150 years). We combined daily climate-growth correlations with the process-based Vaganov-Shashkin growth model to identify differences in critical growth factors between species and age cohorts. In addition, we assessed the coincidence of unusually wide and narrow tree rings with years of specific climatic anomalies. Although growing season temperature was the dominant growth-limiting factor, seasonal effects of water balance on tree growth were considerably large and varied systematically between regions, species, and particularly age cohorts. The growth of young P. sylvestris in Fennoscandia responded negatively to water balance and narrow rings coincided with wet years. In contrast, the growth of young P. cembra in the Alps was drought-limited. Old trees of all species and both age cohorts of L. decidua in the Alps showed limited sensitivity to water balance. The patterns of climate-growth responses in cohort chronologies based on tree age at the year of coring were similar to ontogenetic shifts of climate-growth responses if chronologies were based on the cambial age of individual rings. Our results stress the need to account for interspecific and demographic differences in sensitivity to climate in large-scale studies of cold forest ecosystems.
