The "New course" and its impacts in Central and Eastern Europe : the case of Hungary
Endre Domonkos, András Schlett, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: The death of Stalin on 5 March 1953 signified a watershed in international relations, which promoted to mitigate the tensions between the two main superpowers, the USA and the USSR. These events had repercussions in the Central and Eastern European countries. In the early 1950s, the economic policy based on forced industrialisation and the collectivization of agriculture clearly showed the deficiencies of the command economy. To avoid internal rebellion within the region, the new Soviet leadership decided to correct the mistakes made in economic policy. The aim of the paper is to analyse the impacts of the „New Course” in Central and Eastern Europe based on a multi-disciplinary approach. It also gives an overview about the reforms of Imre Nagy during 1953–1955. Due to length constraints, the essay will not evaluate the foreign relations of each country, rather it focuses on the consequences of the “thaw” between 1953 and 1956.

Artificial intelligence in the educational process : the role of communication and the pitfalls of alienation
David Kraner, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: The integration of artificial intelligence (ai) into the educational process is becoming increasingly relevant and inevitable, raising numerous questions about its impact on the quality of teaching and learning. This article discusses the advan-tages, disadvantages, and challenges faced by educators in using ai within modern learning environments. among the identified benefits are personalized learning, the explanation of complex concepts, increased student engagement, and support in preparing instructional materials. on the other hand, concerns arise regarding the accuracy of information, risks of plagiarism, dependence on technology, and the loss of interpersonal connection. Research indicates that the successful integra-tion of ai requires professional training for teachers, appropriate infrastructure, and critical reflection on ethical aspects. This article focuses on a key question: can the thoughtful use of ai contribute to improved learning outcomes without compromising the human dimension of education?

Image-guided injections for facet joint pain : evidence-based Delphi conjoined consensus paper from the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology and European Society of Neuroradiology
Luca Maria Sconfienza, Danoob Dalili, Miraude Adriaensen, Domenico Albano, Georgina Allen, Maria Pilar Aparisi Gomez, Žiga Snoj, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: Objectives: To perform a Delphi-based consensus on published evidence on image-guided injections for facet joint pain (FJP) and provide clinical indications. Methods: We report the results of an evidence-based Delphi consensus of 38 experts from the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology and the European Society of Neuroradiology, who reviewed the published literature for evidence on image-guided injections for FJP. Experts drafted a list of statements and graded them according to the Oxford Centre for evidence-based medicine levels of evidence. Consensus was considered strong when ≥ 95% of experts agreed with the statement or broad when > 80% but < 95% agreed. The results of the consensus were used to write the paper. Results: Twenty statements on image-guided FJP treatment have been drafted. Eighteen statements received strong consensus, while two received broad consensus. Three statements reached the highest level of evidence, all of them regarding the lumbar spine. All radiological methods are used for image-guided injections for FJP, and regardless of the radiological method used, all show good safety and efficacy. Facet joint injections and medial branch blocks are used in all spinal regions to treat FJP, and both show similar clinical outcomes. Advanced technological solutions have been studied in the field of lumbar FJP; however, the level of evidence for these is low. Conclusion: Despite promising results reported by published papers on image-guided injections for FJP, there is still a lack of evidence on injection efficacy, appropriateness of imaging methods, and optimal medication.

Optimizing foamed glass production with machine learning
Uroš Hribar, Sintija Stevanoska, Christian Leonardo Camacho Villalón, Matjaž Spreitzer, Jakob Koenig, Sašo Džeroski, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: Foamed glass is a lightweight material commonly used for insulation. However, optimizing its properties remains a challenge due to the large number of synthesis parameters involved in its production. While previous studies have investigated synthesis conditions, a comprehensive study applying machine learning approaches is lacking in the literature. In this paper, we apply machine learning methods, i.e., random forests of predictive clustering trees and a multilayer perceptron, training them on 124 experimental data points to accurately predict the apparent density and closed porosity of foamed glass. We then apply a multiobjective optimization algorithm together with the multilayer perceptron to find optimal values for the process parameters used in foamed glass production. Our results show that the combination of machine learning and multiobjective optimization is an effective proxy for the development of novel foamed glass materials.

The intergenerational succession of leadership in the family business : the change succession brings
Bojan Dolar, Roberto Biloslavo, Erhan Aydin, 2024, original scientific article

Abstract: This study focuses on leadership succession in family businesses, specifically examining the first-generation succession in six Slovenian manufacturing family enterprises. The authors introduce a novel perspective to studying this process by not limiting the analysis to the incumbent (IC) - successor (SR) dyad, but also integrating the family members’ view in the research design. By employing a qualitative approach (i.e. a comparative case study that predominantly relies on interviews with all three studied groups) the authors collect rich data on attitudes, perceptions and expectations about succession in family businesses. The research highlights the crucial role of leadership succession in ensuring the longevity and sustainability of family businesses, as effective leadership transitions are vital for maintaining business continuity, preserving family values, and fostering the intergenerational transfer of both knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit. While ICs typically possess a range of attitudes towards succession— from proactive to reluctant—SRs generally approach the process with optimism and caution, driven by their personal needs and expectations. The attitudes of both ICs and SRs are influenced by contextual factors and psychosocial dynamics, which significantly affect the succession's initiation, leadership, and relational dynamics within the family.

Strategic decisions : how good does it fit the decision-making process into the strategic management process?
Edvard Kolar, Matej Tušak, Petra Robnik, Roberto Biloslavo, 2024, original scientific article

Abstract: The complicated dance between the decision-making (hereinafter: DM) process, which is shaped by the individual psychological constructs and internal cognitive processes, and the methodological process of strategic management (hereinafter: SMP), which can be understood as a framework that defines decision context, raises pertinent questions about their coherence. The purpose of this study is to propose an integrative model of the strategic decision-making process (hereinafter: SDM), which links the cognitive processes of decision-makers with the rigour of strategic management and identifies and mitigates potential risks at each stage of the holistic process. To design the research, we used the "model paper" approach which seeks to build a theoretical framework that predicts relationships between research concepts. The developed comprehensive model connects four independent concepts, creating a holistic framework for SDM in organizations. The comprehensive model reveals a high degree of consistency between the SMP, knowable decision-making cycle and cognitive processes. Throughout the entire process, decision-makers need to be mindful of the interplay between System 1 and System 2 thinking. While System 1 thinking may provide quick insights and initiate creative thinking, it is important to complement it with the deliberate and analytical reasoning of System 2 thinking, which can be supported by a proper application of different strategic management tools and methods.
