1. Environmental pollution load and contaminant transfer in Natura 2000 protected brownfield siteAnja Ilenič, Petra Vrhovnik, Sonja Lojen, 2026, original scientific article Abstract: Revitalisation of contaminated brownfield sites is essential for sustainable development, particularly near sensitive ecological areas like Natura 2000 sites. The lagoon in Slovenia’s Regional Park Šturmovci, an artificial wastewater convergence point created during hydroelectric construction, is a highly relevant example. This study integrates geochemical, mineralogical and isotopic analyses to identify sources and controlling mechanisms of contaminant distribution in lagoon sediments and assess their transfer to nearby agricultural soils during flooding events. Results indicate anaerobic conditions, with depth-related shifts in phosphorus, sulphur and redox-sensitive elements, such as rare earth elements (REE), arsenic (As), barium (Ba), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb) and vanadium (V), as well as fluctuations in pyrite-rich laminated layers, suggesting potential flood-driven remobilisation of trace elements. Lagoon sediments are highly contaminated with As (73 mg kg−1), Ba (247 mg kg−1), Pb (97 mg kg−1) and Zn (1118 mg kg−1), with elevated concentrations also observed in agricultural soil, all exceeding respective limit values of 20, 160, 85 and 200 mg kg−1. Pollutant concentrations were highest near wastewater inflows and decreased with distance, with nitrogen isotopic patterns indicating partial nitrification and surface ammonium accumulation, reflecting intensive agricultural inputs in the area. High enrichment factor (EF > 20) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo > 3) values, in particular for As, Cd and Zn, indicated severe contamination and highlighted the urgent need for effective remediation strategies, including immobilisation using biochar or cement-based binders, as well as phytoremediation approaches. 5. A new endemic plant community with Schoenus nigricans in the Southeastern Alps and northern Dinaric AlpsIgor Dakskobler, Andrej Martinčič, 2018, original scientific article Abstract: We studied the phytosociology of plant communities with Schoenus nigricans, a character species of the alliance Caricion davallianae, in western Slovenia. Most of our relevés are classified into the new association Astrantio carniolicae-Schoenetum nigricantis, whose stands grow on moist rocks and in the headwater section of springs and small brooks in dolomite wooded areas, especially in the Cerkno region, in the basin of the Idrijca river. Its character species and (geographical) differential species are Schoenus nigricans, Molinia arundinacea, Astrantia carniolica, Palustriella commutata, Carex flacca, Valeriana saxatilis, Salix glabra, Erica carnea and Primula carniolica. In addition to the typical form (subassociation -typicum) we described also the subassociation with predominating Cladium mariscus (-cladietosum marisci). The studied dolomite headwaters are a Natura 2000 habitat type and the sites of several vulnerable and protected species. Their role as a biotope is therefore significant and requires adequate protection. 6. Successional stages in the development of forest vegetation in cirques of two valleys in the Julian Alps (NW Slovenia)Igor Dakskobler, 2019, original scientific article Abstract: We investigated different types of vegetation in cirques of two valleys in the Julian Alps, Zadnjica and Kot, which develop on slope screes and are heavily influenced by avalanches that occur here every year. Our phytosociological analysis identified the following shrub-forest developmental stages: Saliceteum eleagno-purpureae hieracietosum porrifolii var. Achnatherum calamagrostis, Homogyno sylvestris-Salicetum glabrae, Polysticho lonchitis-Rhamnetum fallacis, Rhododendro hirsuti-Laburnetum alpini, Rhodothamno-Laricetum deciduae anemonetosum trifoliaeand Rhododendro hirsuti-Fagetum sylvaticaevar. Sorbus chamaemespilus. On unconsolidated fluvio-glacial deposits in the Kot Valley we determined the following successional stages: Salicetum eleagno-purpurae hieracietosum porrifolii var. Pinus mugo, Amelanchiero ovalis-Pinetum mugo laricetosumand Rhododendro hirsuti-Fagetum sylvaticae petasitetosum paradoxi. 8. Botanične posebnosti Prodarjeve grape v zgornji Baški dolini (zahodna Slovenija)Igor Dakskobler, Andrej Marinčič, 2021, original scientific article Abstract: Raziskali smo rastje spodnjega, zavarovanega dela Prodarjeve grape v prigorju Porezna v zgornji Baški dolini. 9. Phytosociological analysis of Gladiolus palustris sites in northwestern, western and southwestern SloveniaIgor Dakskobler, Andrej Seliškar, Branko Vreš, 2021, original scientific article Abstract: With a phytosociological analysis of more than 200 relevés on more than 25 localities with Gladiolus palustrisand (or) G. illyricusin western and southwestern Slovenia we identified more than 15 communities of association rank that belong to at least eight vegetation alliances and five classes. We determined that these two species can grow on the same localities and sites, but Gladiolus palustrisflowers at least 14 days after G. illyricus. Another reliable distinguishing characteristic is the fibrous tunic covering the corm. Gladiolus palustris is threatened in most of the examined localities, except for the Banjšice Plateau and the Slavnik range in Čičarija, but the current nature conservation policy in Slovenia does not provide for its preservation.
