Radiological characterization of alkali-activated material doped with Sm[sub]2O[sub]3 and its polymerization products
Sanja Knežević, Marija M. Ivanović, Snežana S. Nenadović, Milica Rajačić, Marijan Nečemer, Jelena Potočnik, Miloš Nenadović, 2024, original scientific article

Abstract: The aim of this study was determination of radiological characterization of alkali-activated material with Sm2O3 and its polymerization products. Alkali-activated materials with 1 wt.% and 5 wt.% addition of Sm2O3 were synthesized and their natural radioactivity was determined. Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence showed changes in the phase composition, or the formation of stable compounds, at higher temperatures. All samples demonstrated good pozzolanic activity, while the percentage of Sm2O3 was slightly changed. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that the obtained material has a very low carbon content making it environmentally friendly, due to its low carbon content. A detailed analysis of the oxygen peak indicates variations in the stoichiometry of the oxides, which may affect the changes of natural radioactivity. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed that with the increase in the temperature of the thermal treatment, the opening of the pores in the alkali-activated material occurs, as well as further propagation of reaction that increased porosity and crystallization. Radiological measurement confirmed that examined alkali-activated material is safe for usage and exploitation. It should be emphasized that the presence of artificial radionuclide cesium 137Cs was not detected.

Igor Dakskobler, Marija Skok, Gabrijel Seljak, Jože Lango, Martina Bačič, 2020, original scientific article

Abstract: V Čepovanski dolini (Čepovan, zaselek Šulgi), na severovzhodnem robu Banjške planote v vasi Grudnica (občina Tolmin) in pri vasi Sveto v južnem delu te planote smo našli nova nahajališča vrste Thlaspi sylvestre (T. caerulescens), ki dopolnjujejo njeno do zdaj znano razširjenost v Sloveniji (Srednji Lokovec, Vrata), in popisali njena rastišča. Raste na travnikih in pašnikih v okolici človeških bivališč, v mejicah, na cestnih brežinah, na gozdnem robu in v svetlem pionirskem gozdu. Njene najbolj pogoste spremljevalke so vrste Galium mollugo agg. (G. album), Cruciata glabra, Rumex acetosa, Ranunculus acris, Taraxacum sect. Ruderalia in Veronica chamaedrys.

Razporeditev makrofitov v kraški reki Rak in ocena stanja vodnega ekosistema
Darja Kopitar, Marija Kravanja, Aleksander Trajbarič, Mateja Germ, 2022, original scientific article

Abstract: Kraški svet predstavljajo geografsko in geološko izjemno dinamična območja, ki so močno povezana z delovanjem vode. A Riparian, Channel, and Environmental Inventory) smo reko Rak uvrstili v najvišje RCE kakovostne razrede. Na osnovi indeksa RMI (ang. River Macrophyte Index) smo reko Rak uvrstili v dobro oz. zelo dobro ekološko stanje.

Thermally activated composite ▫$Y_2O_3-bTiO_2$▫ as an efficient photocatalyst for degradation of azo dye reactive black 5
Aleksandar Jovanović, Mladen Bugarčić, Jelena Petrović, Marija Simić, Kristina Žagar, Janez Kovač, Miroslav Sokić, 2026, original scientific article

Abstract: Water pollution from textile effluents poses serious environmental risks, particularly due to persistent anionic dyes such as Reactive Black 5 (RB5). This study demonstrates that simple deposition of Y2O3 onto commercially available, biobased TiO2 (bTiO2) significantly enhances photocatalytic degradation efficiency under simulated sunlight, suppressing rapid recombination of electron–hole pairs. Addressing a key research gap, the proposed method replaces expensive nanoscale precursors and complex synthesis routes typically used for Y2O3/TiO2 systems with a low-cost, straightforward approach involving weak complexation and co-precipitation. The resulting Y2O3-bTiO2 composite was characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX, TEM, XPS, and UV-DRS techniques, confirming efficient incorporation of Y2O3 on the TiO2 surface. Photocatalytic experiments revealed that nanoparticles calcined at 700 °C achieved complete RB5 degradation within 60 min—reducing the reaction time by half compared to undoped bTiO2. Systematic studies of initial dye concentration, catalyst loading, and irradiation time confirmed that the degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.064 min−1 (R2 = 0.98). Calculated quantum yields corroborated the reduced electron–hole recombination induced by Y2O3 deposition. These findings highlight the novelty and practicality of the developed Y2O3-bTiO2 photocatalyst as an efficient, affordable, and environmentally sustainable material for the degradation of industrial dyes.

Evaluation of hemodynamic and biomarker changes in patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement
Dimce Slaveski, Dragana Lončar-Stojiljković, Aleksandra Gavrilovska-Brzanov, Marija Bozhinovska, Haris Sulejmani, Marija Jovanovski Srceva, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: Background: Aortic stenosis (AS) is a systemic disease characterized by valvular obstruction, ventricular remodeling, and perioperative vulnerability to oxygen supply–demand imbalance. This study evaluated perioperative metabolic and biomarker dynamics and early postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR). Patients and Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted on 60 consecutive adults with severe AS who underwent surgical AVR at a single center. Demographics, anthropometric data, intraoperative variables, complications, and pre- and postoperative hemodynamic and laboratory parameters were evaluated. Postoperatively, the following were assessed at 6 and 24 hours: mean arterial pressure (MAP), arterial oxygen saturation (SaO₂), partial pressure of oxygen (PaO₂), pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO₂), hemoglobin (Hb), lactate, and creatine kinase–MB isoenzyme (CK-MB). Continuous data are presented as mean ± standard deviation (SD) or median (interquartile range, IQR). Paired t-tests were used to compare values between 6 and 24 hours. Results: The mean age was 69.9 ± 7.3 years; 58.3% were male. Mean anesthesia and operation times were 151.5 ± 21.8 and 126.8 ± 20.6 minutes, respectively; mean cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and cross-clamp times were 78.3 ± 17.6 and 58.5 ± 16.7 minutes. Nearly half of the patients (46.7%) had no postoperative complications; others experienced bleeding (16.7%), arrhythmias requiring therapy (6.7%), permanent pacemaker implantation (8.3%), re-exploration (6.7%), infection (8.3%), respiratory failure (3.3%), or renal failure (3.3%). From 6 to 24 hours postoperatively, lactate decreased (2.34 ± 0.96 →1.87 ± 0.98 mmol/L; p = 0.006) and CK-MB declined (52.5 ± 34.2 →39.0 ± 30.8 U/L; p = 0.001), while Hb increased (103.5 ± 10.1 →120.1 ± 22.9 g/L; p < 0.001). pH decreased modestly (7.396 ± 0.057 →7.365 ± 0.065; p = 0.015). MAP, SaO₂, PaO₂, and PaCO₂ showed no significant changes. The median hospital stay was 7 days (IQR 6–8). Conclusions: In patients undergoing surgical AVR for AS, early postoperative trends demonstrated an improving metabolic profile (lower lactate) and biomarker normalization (CK-MB) with stable oxygenation, alongside low-to-moderate complication rates and a consistent 7-day median stay. Integrating perioperative oxygen-balance markers and cardiac biomarkers with imaging and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) assessment may refine timing and risk stratification for intervention. Prospective studies with standardized imaging and longer follow-up are warranted to link early metabolic recovery with ventricular remodeling and clinical outcomes.

Aleš Pleskovič, Jovana Nikolajević, Sara Mankoč Ramuš, Ines Cilenšek, Marija Šantl-Letonja, Jana Makuc, Andreja Cokan Vujkovac, Danijel Petrovič, 2016, original scientific article

Abstract: Background: Our study was designed to test the possible association between either polymorphisms T889C (rs1800587) or C3954T (rs1143634) of the interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1α) gene with subclinical markers of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Moreover, the effect of both polymorphisms on progression of carotid atherosclerosis in 3.8-year follow-up was studied. Patients and methods: 595 subjects with T2DM were enrolled in the prospective study. Subclinical markers of carotid atherosclerosis were assessed with ultrasound at the time of recruitment and after 3.8-years. Genotyping of two polymorphisms (rs1800587, rs1143634) was performed with real-time PCR System. Results: The comparison of atherosclerosis parameters was performed with regard to different genotypes of IL-1α rs1800587 and rs1143634 polymorphisms upon enrolment. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed the association of IL-1α rs1143634 on total plaque thickness progression in a 3.8 year follow up. Conclusions: An association between either the IL-1α rs1800587 or rs1143634 and total plaque thickness at the time of recruitment was reported. Additionally, we demonstrated the effect of the IL-1α rs1143634 on total plaque thickness progression in the 3.8-year follow-up in patients with T2DM.

CO₂ and temperature variations during peak tourist season in Lepe jame (Postojna Cave, Slovenia)
Matija Perne, Marija Zlata Božnar, Primož Mlakar, Boštjan Grašič, Dragana Kokal, Franci Gabrovšek, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: We present and analyze measurements of CO₂ concentration and air temperature taken during the peak tourist season of 2017 in Lepe Jame, a poorly ventilated passage within Postojnska Jama, Slovenia. During the study, the passage was visited by between 5500 and 6500 visitors per day. Both parameters show pronounced diurnal fluctuations, primarily driven by visitor activity. As part of our campaign, we tested and confirmed the effectiveness of enhanced ventilation—achieved by opening the artificial tunnel connecting Postojnska Jama to Črna Jama—in preventing excessively high CO₂ concentrations. The measure is, however, questionable, as it affects the microclimate in Črna Jama. Although CO₂ concentration and temperature are correlated, notable differences emerge in the shapes of their respective rise and recession curves. Temperature increases more rapidly with the arrival of visitors, while it decreases more slowly after visiting hours compared to CO₂. This lag is attributed to thermal storage: heat from visitors is absorbed by the cave walls during the day and gradually released into the cave during the night.
