Search behaviour of two hemipteran species using vibrational communication
Maarten De Groot, Andrej Čokl, Meta Virant-Doberlet, 2011, original scientific article

Abstract: The ability of conspecifics to recognize and locate each other in the environment depends on the efficiency of intraspecific communication. We compared the mate searching strategies of southern green stinkbug Nezara viridula (male searches for a continuously calling female) and the leafhopper Aphrodes makarovi (partners form a precisely coordinated duet). Males of both species were tested on plants in playback experiments. One leaf was vibrated with unaltered conspecific female signals or with various conspecific signals using modified temporal parameters. The results showed that the onset of searching was faster in A. makarovi than in N. viridula. Changes in temporal parameters of female replies had negative effect on the searching behaviour of A. makarovi. Males located the source of longer female replies faster than the short female call and they failed to locate the source of a female reply with temporal parameters outsid the species-specific values. In contrast, in N. viridula, searching males successfully located also the source of a female song with parameters outside the species-specific values. The results are discussed with regard to male behavioural strategies in species with different vibrational communication systems and different male mating investment.

25 let revije Natura Sloveniae
Rok Kostanjšek, Nataša Mori, Matjaž Bedjanič, Maarten De Groot, Nina Šajna, Jernej Polajnar, Maja Zagmajster, 2023, other scientific articles

Abstract: Prispevek predstavi zgodovino in razvoj revije Natura Sloveniaev 25 letih izhajanja, od 1999 do 2023. V 25. letu izhajanja prehaja revija v so-izdajanju Biotehniške fakultete Univerze v Ljubljani in Nacionalnega inštituta za biologijo v okvir Založbe Univerze v Ljubljani in prične uporabljati nov portal za oddajo in obravnavo rokopisov. V tem letu tudi prvič izide tretja, tematska številka revije. Po četrt stoletja rednega izhajanja zaseda Natura Sloveniae pomembno mesto v slovenski znanstveni periodiki s področja biologije in nadaljuje svoje poslanstvo objavljanja izvirnih znanstvenih prispevkov s področja favnističnih, florističnih, biogeografskih, biodiverzitetnih in ekoloških raziskav v osrednji in jugovzhodni Evropi, ter vzpodbujanja mladih piscev k objavi svojih terenskih opažanj.

Abstract: Biological invasions are a major threat to biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and nature's contributions to people worldwide. However, the effectiveness of invasive alien species (IAS) management measures and the progress toward achieving biodiversity targets remain uncertain due to limited and nonuniform data availability. Management success is usually assessed at a local level and documented in technical reports, often written in languages other than English, which makes such data notoriously difficult to collect at large geographic scales. Here we present the first European assessment of how managers perceive trends in IAS and the effectiveness of management measures to mitigate biological invasions. We developed a structured questionnaire translated into 18 languages and disseminated it to local and regional managers of IAS in Europe. We received responses from 1928 participants from 41 European countries, including 24 European Union (EU) Member States. Our results reveal substantial efforts in IAS monitoring and control, with invasive plants being the primary focus. Yet, there is a general perception of an increase in the numbers, occupied areas, and impacts of IAS across environment and taxonomic groups, particularly plants, over time. This perceived increase is consistent across both EU and non-EU countries, with respondents from EU countries demonstrating more certainty in their responses. Our results also indicate a lack of data on alien vertebrates and invertebrates, reflecting a need for more targeted monitoring and knowledge sharing between managers and policymakers and between countries. Overall, our study suggests that Europe's current strategies are insufficient to substantially reduce IAS by 2030 and hence to meet the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework target.
