Growing stock monitoring by European National Forest Inventories : historical origins, current methods and harmonisation

Abstract: Wood resources have been essential for human welfare throughout history. Also nowadays, the volume of growing stock (GS) is considered one of the most important forest attributes monitored by National Forest Inventories (NFIs) to inform policy decisions and forest management planning. The origins of forest inventories closely relate to times of early wood shortage in Europe causing the need to explore and plan the utilisation of GS in the catchment areas of mines, saltworks and settlements. Over time, forest surveys became more detailed and their scope turned to larger areas, although they were still conceived as stand-wise inventories. In the 1920s, the first sample-based NFIs were introduced in the northern European countries. Since the earliest beginnings, GS monitoring approaches have considerably evolved. Current NFI methods differ due to country-specific conditions, inventory traditions, and information needs. Consequently, GS estimates were lacking international comparability and were therefore subject to recent harmonisation efforts to meet the increasing demand for consistent forest resource information at European level. As primary large-area monitoring programmes in most European countries, NFIs assess a multitude of variables, describing various aspects of sustainable forest management, including for example wood supply, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity. Many of these contemporary subject matters involve considerations about GS and its changes, at different geographic levels and time frames from past to future developments according to scenario simulations. Due to its historical, continued and currently increasing importance, we provide an up-to-date review focussing on large-area GS monitoring where we i) describe the origins and historical development of European NFIs, ii) address the terminology and present GS definitions of NFIs, iii) summarise the current methods of 23 European NFIs including sampling methods, tree measurements, volume models, estimators, uncertainty components, and the use of air- and space-borne data sources, iv) present the recent progress in NFI harmonisation in Europe, and v) provide an outlook under changing climate and forest-based bioeconomy objectives.

Strategija razvoja mestnih gozdov Ljubljane

Abstract: Strategija razvoja mestnih gozdov Ljubljane opredeljuje vizijo in dolgoročne prioritete celovitega razvoja mestnih gozdov Ljubljane. Strategija je podlaga za upravljanje z mestnimi gozdovi, ki pomembno prispevajo k zagotavljanju zdravega življenjskega okolja za prebivalce in obiskovalce mesta. Strategija izraža/upošteva interes lokalne skupnosti do gozdov v mestu in njegovi neposredni okolici ter prispeva k odgovornemu načrtovanju gospodarjenja z gozdovi za potrebe skupnosti. Strategija je bila na pobudo Mestne občine Ljubljana izdelana v okviru projekta INTERREG URBforDAN za območje mestnih gozdov Ljubljane, torej vseh tistih, ki so po občinskem prostorskem načrtu opredeljeni kot gozdovi z izjemno poudarjenimi socialnimi funkcijami. Namen strategije je spodbuditi različne institucije, nevladne organizacije in posameznike k aktivnejšemu vključevanju v soodločanje o razvoju mestnih gozdov Ljubljane, krepiti zavest o pomenu teh gozdov ter izboljšati podlage za gospodarjenje z gozdovi, ki krepi socialne in ekološke funkcije. V prispevku so podane poglavitne značilnosti Strategije razvoja mestnih gozdov Ljubljane vključno s cilji in usmeritvami. Strategija nastavlja okvirje za sistem organizacijskih, finančnih in drugih ukrepov, s katerim bi lahko izboljšali usklajevanje javnih interesov v urbanem gozdnem prostoru, ki je pretežno v zasebni lasti. Izpostavlja tudi pomen sodelovanja z zasebnimi lastniki za zagotavljanje socialnih funkcij v mestnih gozdovih.

Children's daily routine response to COVID-19 emergency measures in Serbia

Abstract: Objective: The emergence of coronavirus in Serbia as well as in other European countries led to the declaration of a state of emergency, which, among other measures, included a switch to online education, the lockdown of public life and organized sports, and a curfew from 5 pm to 5 am. This study aimed to investigate the extent to which these measures affected children's daily routines. More specifically, it aimed to determine how children maintained their learning, physical activity, and screen time routines from the period before the state of emergency was declared. Methods: Response to an online parent-reported questionnaire was conducted (N = 450). The factorial validity of the scales was prepared using confirmatory factor analysis, with acceptable fit indices. Based on that, the authors tested the interrelations between dimensions using structural equation modeling in SPSS, AMOS 24.0. Results: The study results indicate a positive relationship between school achievement and study time (% = 0.25). They also indicate that children who were physically active before the pandemic continued their activities during the emergency state (% = 0.53). Physical activity impact during the COVID-19 emergency measures reduces children%s behavior changes (% = 0.55). Finally, they highlight that children who spent more time with multimedia content had greater changes in anxiety, sensitivity, nervousness, and worry due to COVID-19 emergency measures (% = %0.38). Conclusions: Healthy lifestyle habits formed in childhood are suggested to be responsible for the greater %resistance to change% shown by the children from this study.

Fractional heat shock protein 27 urine excretion as a short-term predictor in acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Abstract: Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality and is characterized by episodes of acute exacerbations. Finding a systemic biomarker that reliably predicts outcome after an acute exacerbation remains a major challenge. Heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) has been previously studied in COPD, however, urine excretion trajectory and prognostic value after an exacerbation is unknown. Methods: In this retrospective post hoc analysis of a prospective study that included 253 COPD patients who were hospitalized for acute exacerbation, 207 patients were analyzed. Urine and serum were sampled at admission, discharge, and 180 days after discharge; urine excretion trajectory was analyzed and correlated with clinicopathological and survival data. Results: HSP27 urine excretion increased after an exacerbation episode [1.8% admission, 1.8% discharge, 2.3% 180 days after discharge (P=0.091)]. In severely ill patients (GOLD IV) this course was even more distinct [1.6% admission, 2.1% discharge, 2.8% 180 days after discharge (P=0.007)]. Furthermore, fractional HSP27 urine excretion at discharge was increased in GOLD IV patients (P=0.031). In Kaplan-Meier and univariable Cox proportional hazard models patients with HSP27 urine excretion below 0.845% showed significantly worse survival at 30, 90 and 180 days after discharge. In a multivariable Cox proportional hazard model including established COPD outcome parameters fractional HSP27 urine excretion remained a significant predictor of survival at 30 and 90 days after discharge. Comparing this model to our already published model that includes HSP27 serum concentration we could show that fractional HSP27 urine excretion performs better in short-term survival. Conclusions: Our findings provide novel information about fractional HSP27 urine excretion trajectory in acute exacerbation of COPD. Fractional HSP27 urine excretion may be significantly reduced during an episode of acute exacerbation in COPD patients and may be used as a predictor of short-term all-cause mortality.

Depresija - stres, maligna bolezen in zdravljenje

Abstract: V pričujočem članku je prikazan pomen depresije s poudarkom na genetskih in stresnih dejavnikih, ki vplivajo na njen izbruh. Težje kronične telesne bolezni, kot so maligne, so dolgotrajni stresni dejavniki, ki pomembno prispevajo k razvoju depresije. Najučinkovitejši način zdravljenja velike depresije so zdravila iz skupine antidepresivov, ki se razlikujejo po načinu učinkovanja in jih izbiramo glede na vodilno simptomatiko depresije. Zato je pomembno, kateri antidepresiv izbrati glede na klinično sliko depresije, ker to vpliva na uspeh pri njenem zdravljenju. Na takšen način se pomembno vpliva na prognozo, ne samo depresije, temveč tudi prisotnih telesnih bolezni, kot so maligne bolezni.
