Mindfulness and teachers’ diversity awareness : indirect effect of mindful teaching in a sample of in-service teachers

Abstract: The question of addressing the diversity of students is one of the most pressing challenges for teachers. Practicing mindfulness can serve as a valuable support mechanism for teachers navigating situations that challenge diversity awareness. In this study, we test the indirect effect of mindfulness in teaching on the relationship between mindfulness and diversity awareness. We operationalise mindfulness in teaching through its interpersonal and intrapersonal dimension and diversity awareness through teachers’ self-efficacy in teaching in diverse settings, their cultural beliefs, and their’ flexibility/openness. We use data from a Slovene sample form the HAND IN HAND: Empowering Teachers Across Europe to Deal with Social, Emotional and Diversity Related Career Challenges (HAND:ET) project (N = 207; 94.2% females). The path analyses showed: (i) direct paths between mindfulness and all indicators of diversity awareness; (ii) direct paths between mindfulness and the intrapersonal dimension of mindfulness in teaching (but not the interpersonal dimension); (iii) direct paths from dimensions of mindfulness in teaching to indicators of diversity awareness; and (iv) significant indirect paths leading from mindfulness thorough the intrapersonal dimension of mindfulness in teaching to indicators of diversity awareness. Implications for research and practice in regard to teachers’ professional development are discussed.

Abstract: Priročnik za načrtovanje krepitve vključujoče razredne in šolske klime ter preprečevanja in odzivanja na medvrstniško nasilje v osnovni šoli poglobljeno predstavlja pojav medvrstniškega nasilja in njegove dejavnike. V priročniku so prav tako predstavljene ključne ugotovitve kvantitativne in kvalitativne raziskave, ki jo je raziskovalna skupina izvedla v okviru projekta Socialni kontekst kot dejavnik medvrstniškega nasilja: kako z oblikovanjem pozitivne vrstniške kulture prispevati k vključujoči šoli?. V priročniku so predstavljene z dokazi podprte smernice za preprečevanje in odzivanje na medvrstniško nasilje, namenjene učiteljem, svetovalnim delavcem in ostalim strokovnim delavcem ter učencem na osnovnih šolah. Predstavljeni so tudi primeri dobrih praks.

Občutek pripadnosti šoli, dobrobit in učna uspešnost učencev in učenk : vpogledi mednarodnih raziskav znanja

Abstract: Občutek pripadnosti šoli je v znanstvenih razpravah prepoznan kot temeljna potreba posameznika. V kontekstu šole je občutek pripadnosti šoli prepoznan kot pomemben dejavnik učne uspešnosti in dobrobiti učencev in učenk. Zaradi raznolikosti in razpršenosti raziskav v širšem mednarodnem okolju ter mankom le teh v slovenskem prostoru pa so dosedanji vpogledi v občutek pripadnosti šoli slovenskih učencev in učenk relativno omejeni. Znanstvena monografija je odgovor na to problematiko. Občutek pripadnosti slovenskih učencev in učenk poglobljeno osvetljuje s podatki mednarodnih raziskav znanja.

School belongingness and family support as predictors of school bullying perpetration and victimization in adolescents : are relations the same for students with an immigrant background?

Abstract: The aim of the study was to examine school belongingness and family support as predictors of bullying behavior and victimization, and the moderating role of students’ gender and immigrant background in a large representative sample of Slovenian adolescents (N = 1925; 42.50% male). The results indicated that school belongingness significantly predicted both bullying and victimization. Family support did not contribute to the incremental validity beyond school belongingness in predicting victimization. Gender was found to moderate the relationship between school belongingness and both bullying outcomes. The relationship between school belongingness and victimization was stronger for students with an immigrant background.

Anxiety in a COVID-19 school year context : three-way longitudinal study on Slovenian adolescent sample

Abstract: Background and Objectives:We investigated the trajectories of anxiety,general anxiety and more specifically COVID-19 anxiety in the period ofschool closure in Slovenia using a longitudinal design with three timepoints: at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the school year.Design and Methods:We have used data from a representativeadolescent sample for Slovenia (n= 1233) and two anxiety scales: theLAOM Anxiety Scale and the COVID-19 Anxiety Scale. Thefindings fromlatent growth curve models show a significant difference in initial levelsand a decrease in both types of anxiety as well as an interaction effectbetween the initial level and the rate of change of COVID-19 anxiety. Inaddition to investigating the change in time, we were interested incovariates.Results and Conclusions:Thefindings show significant effects of: (a)gender, school level and academic achievement on initial levels ofCOVID-19 anxiety; (b) gender and school level on initial levels ofanxiety; (c) gender on the rate of change in anxiety; (d) academicachievement on the rate of change in COVID-19 anxiety; and,additionally, (e) the significant but different role that schoolbelongingness plays in anxiety and in particular COVID-19 anxiety.
