Dialectology is defined as a science within genealogy, which is one of the three branches of linguistics (along with typolinguistics and sociolinguistics). It is emphasised that within dialectology, theorems and criteria from different branches of linguistics cannot be combined, and in this context a clearer definition of the meaning of the adjective Slovenian within the phrase Slovenian dialects is also given.
